I find that the classic models have more a statuesque pose, most likely due to technical limitations but I really much prefer this look, as well. When the arms and weapons are held out in the poses, it's much simpler to clip and customize them and the READABILITY and cohesiveness of your entire army looks so much better when you have a whole unit of guys. The problem I have with the modern range of WH stuff is how almost every unit is in some dynamic heroic pose, jumping through air, tiptoeing on a spent shell casing etc. and this makes your army look like a group of collectible figurines.

It also sucks when you want to paint your minis and half your guys hold their guns across their chest so fully painting them becomes much, much harder unless you do some fancy assembly acrobatics.

Couldn't agree more. A marine standing alert with a weapon is potential for imagination in the game. A marine firing a grapple hook or throwing a grenade on one foot is just that only. Digital sculpting will only make the models look like a computer game come to life.

That also depends on model, there are some older models that have better poses than modern ones. Good example are daemonettes - modern daemonettes are insanely static in their poses - pretty much all just... standing there with pincers up, they look clunky and fail to convey this strange elegance typically associated with them. Newer models featuring daemonettes largely rectify this, like infernal enrapturess, or contorted epitome, but still, the troops stand out here, not in a good way, especially when compared to classic ones. For some armies, very dynamic poses make sense, like Slaaneshi demons, or certain Eldar troops. Others, like Necrons or certain Guard regiments work very well with more static poses.

If I'm generalizing, I'll say I like retro models more than modern. Modern models tend to get too busy. The retro hand-sculpted look is one that I find endearing. Retro sculpts also usually lend themselves to bright color schemes which I'm partial to. Realistically, though, modern and classic both have a place on my shelf. They're both great.

Watch yourself pay double for the cleaned ones with tabs because you know it's not a recast and you don't need to worry about if the paint will come off. Watch all those tabless eBay listings sit unloved. Embrace the tab. That is the makers mark.

That said, I think the loving of the older, here I’m thinking early to mid 90’s, models is all nostalgia. And I love that. I painted up some old Rogue Trader marines to use a scouts and I just love them. A big part of my Chaos marine date back 20 year and the are so cool. But that doesn’t take away from the quality of today. Cheers! 🖌

Honestly it's really nice that genestealer cults get a couple character options that can be kitbashed. As well as access to some guard gubbins. I just wish more armies had those extra options. So much choice potential for Aeldari (plus new kits for them), guard, chaos Marines etc I will also argue that the metal missionary with chainsword has one of GWs best faces. Because I want to be contraversial

One thing to talk about after seeing the St. Celestine example - many new models are OVERsculpted. I'm painting them right now for a friend and it turns out sub assembly is almost a necessity and the rest of breaking them is real just while handling normally. Half-hidden detail on them is also incredibly annoying since it's just visible enough to need painting but hidden away enough to risk making mistakes. Let's not even talk about the in-between dark days of Finecast XD Honestly I can't see many newer gamers preferring the old stuff (nostalgia is a hell of a drug), but with GW's current pricing it's actually cheaper to try and buy old models quite often - especially in Australia!

I enjoy that the older sculpts are smaller so my builds are smaller but can be more expansive since I can fit more minis in the build and they take less time to paint. I think everything, even the old sculpts and "ugly" minis have a place... I maybe alone here but that old metal Nagash was a banger back in 1998 man...he was metal AF! You made an excellent point talking about Hand Sculpting vs Digital. The toolset is different, but the mindset, the process is all still the same. Regardless of which method you prefer, you still have to conceptualize, design, construct, add material, remove material. Its all the same. Digital just streamlines the process, it doesn't need as much space, you dont need tons of materials taking up space, you can undo and zoom in to add insane amounts of detail. I personally prefer hand scultping, I just love the feel of actual clay. However if I were to ever sculpt professionally, I'd go digital.

What I like about old hand-sculpted minis (not just limited to GW) is that you can see a lot of the personality of the sculptor in them. In the case of a lot of Reaper minis, for instance, you can see which ones were made by who, and even roughly in what period of time. What I like about a lot of the new digitally sculpted models (especially GW, but the sculpts for Oathmark/Frostgrave/Stargrave have this too) is that they all have very much the same style. Stormcast Eternals and Chaos Warriors look different, but they have a same visual style. I doubt they were designed by the same sculptor, but they both follow the same art direction, which makes them look good when staring eachother down on the battlefield. You can see that they belong to the same game, whereas older hand-sculpted models don't always nicely match the same style.

You can hand sculpt and get the benefits of modern tech if you sculpt in a much larger form and then 3D Scan and scale the model digitally. You get the "pure" aspect of sculpting whilst getting much better detail as they sculpted at a larger scale to begin with. I don't mind either but for those who want to create in the old way. It is still possible whilst getting really good results.

I once bought second-hand plastic Eldar Dire Avengers from troll trader and no more. The person, who sold it there superglued unpainted model together and it was a nightmare to put it apart and impossible in few cases without breaking some parts of it. For those unfamiliar with Dire Avengers, it is one of those models that have weapons in front of the belly so you cannot paint the front of the model with the weapon in place. I bought 2 groups of five and half of them were with the wrong bases, (the superglued ones had 30mm instead of 25mm) so I had to remove them from bases. (All those destroyed feet I had to remodel...) By the way, this is not the fault of Troll Trader, they are an awesome place to buy second-hand models. I guess that person, who superglued it sold it there, because they probably could not paint it without breaking it apart and considered selling it there and buying new ones easier than breaking it apart and repairing it. And those superglued models were in discount at the Troll Trader, I now can guess why... From then I buy new plastic models only when I can buy them not-assembled. But since I buy mainly second-hand models, I started to prefer older one-part metallic models, which are much more durable and you do not need to take them apart to paint them.

Your example is exactly how I feel about older imperial guard metals compared to the newer plastics (especially some of the Commissar sculpts) The Commissar with the power fist that has his jacket off his arms and resting on the shoulders, it's one of my all-time favourite minis. I think the new Commissar doesn't even come close to how cool that mini is. Granted the new one is still a good mini, I just really like the older one a lot. It oozed personality, and there were a bunch of different ones as well that were completely different from one another. Now we have one design and that's it (there's a female one as well I think, but not sure if that's even available any more)

I see where you're coming from, and I do agree the newer models have a lot more detail and often look more "realistic", but... I love some of the older, goofier models, like the marauder dwarf slayers! Some of the older models (like Nagash and Ariel) were pretty bad, but for me the sweet spot was around 6-7th edition warhammer fantasy. I find them easier and more enjoyable to paint, and also (as many commenters have pointed out) easier to customise and kitbash. Edit: I didn't hear your conclusion before making this comment, and just wanted to change it to say I actually do 100% agree! XD Getting the minis we like, and having a variety in our collection, is definitely the best way to go! :)

There were also technical limitations when it came to old-school models. The limitations of mold engineering meant a lot of models were restricted to fairly two-dimensional poses. Multi-part plastic meant that the limit was theoretically obsolete, but it still took a while for the sculptors and engineers to discover the freedom the new technology offered. The new issue is that some sculpts go too far in the other direction and become too dynamic, which reduces the interchangeable nature of parts. In a sense, we've done a 360 and come back to mono-pose models.

Though GW are now smashing it out of the park with plastic minis, I do miss the personal hand sculpted older ones. You could tell who did what as they all had an individual style. Back in the 90's the box even had the sculpter's name on it, and threw White Dwarf you "knew" them. I knew Jes Goodwin was going to amaze me and also knew a Gary Morley mini wasn't going to rock my world lol. It's impossible to name a sculpter based on a mini today, as they (although great) are clones of each other now, style wise.

The old models were better. They were easier to paint and better to play with. I built a new unit of Wraithblades and I am freaked out every time I touch them that an arm is going to snap off. Some of the old sculpts were trash, but so are some of the new ones. There was more good than bad. I miss metal figures.

Not that I ever played, but I think the old 1980's and 1990's miniatures were better suited for the business of gaming because they were more compact. The first Warhammer 40K boxed game came with a set of Space Marines + Orks & Gretchins. they were poor sculpts (I especially never liked the weird position of the Orks' axes) but as playing pieces they ranked up easily, and were easily identifiable. something like the modern Sigmar Nighthaunt models look great, but they're prone to bits snapping off and much falling over.

My favorite of the older metal minis are the "famous familiars" from Citadel-GW. They have no real rules anymore, but they're cool quirky little characters, half the height of a regular troop mini. Three personal highlights are the little homunculus on stilts, the moon headed guy with a can opener, and the hooded dude with carrying a pile of scrolls. No suggested paint schemes or army color guides, just paint whatever colors feel good that day. It's a tiny magical fiend, how can you go wrong? I think the old metals had a good balance of details without getting too "busy" with bling, and there are fewer areas hidden by layers of accessories. That said, the old metal Nagash was a freaking joke. We used to call him Silly-Hat-Nagash.

Still a ton cheaper than God hands though, and are what I use for clipping small parts from sprues) I always wanted the "god hand" but they're very expensive. I use the cheaper ones for any heavy lifting, and I have a really old citadel pair that I will use for anything that's likely to damage or blunt them. The cheaper pair are actually wire cutters though, not purpose made sprue cutters so they're great for heavier duty stuff. I am sure we have the same ones, just different colour handles (mine has the black bit as well)

@@Edheldui if GW sculpted each model individually in cad then yes it would be true be true that it takes the same amount of effort than the old traditional way. The problem is that GW seems to make assets that they copy and paste onto other sculpts, sometimes being more than half of the "new" sculpt, giving modern GW a homogeneous feel and less character than the old models. Honestly i prefer some of the older models. They were a bit simper and chunkier, but that is a good thing, since they are more robust. The latest models seem very 'wispy'. They are full of bits that look like they will break off if you so much as look at them. They feel more like something you would paint to display rather than something that is practical to play with. Another thing about the simpler older models is that they are more recognisable. I feel like the complexity of the newer models kinda makes them all blend together in a tangle of twisty, wispy bits when you see them together on terrain rather than being more distinct, ironically.
