This car may have been a taxi for a short while, and the blue switch and unknown wiring may have been for signage/radio. However,a mileage of 112k is rather low for a taxi. My old taxi, Peugeot 406diesel declared on 451k, and was still running well. Only a broken timing belt at 180k blotted it's it's copy book. It was still capable of being motd and ran for a couple of years. Instead,it was plundered for parts. Great review btw!

This ones got a tow bar, so I recon the original owner may have wired up an aditional fan for while towing. Not that ive found one, but its possible. Its too clean inside to have been a taxi. No screw holes on bumpers, however the left side of the centre console has a lot of holes in it. Its on 118k now and still going strong. Only thing ive done to it is put a set of diplomat alloys on.

Ah yes, the old 'Turbo Intercooler' boot badges adorned the early 1990s turbo diesel Vauxhalls. Great car.

Ive always loved the Carlton since my dad had a couple in my early childhood. As a result, ive put a deposit down on one myself. A Diplomat no less. Cant wait to join the retro daily mob :)

Excellent job. Ive owned three carltons . My first one cost me £150 off eBay and i fell in love with it , then i had the cdx 2.0 ltr estate , and my last one was the Diplomat 2.0 ltr and it was beautiful. My family and I went every where in it all over the country. Then after nearly four years of motoring the automatic gearbox gave up the thrust convertor was burnt out . And it would have cost me the car three times over to get fixed . So I bought an Omega 2.5 V6 CDX , and kept the carlton hoping one day i could afford to fix it , which never happened unfortunately. She now lives in Vauxhall heaven 😭

could of parted it out or sold it for just over scrap value. (all of the things i assume you thought of) you never know who may have the gearbox laying about and sees it on ebay. but sometimes the scrapyard is the only way...

Considering it hit the design drawing board around 1981 it was quite advanced in it's time - Ford were still flogging the Cortina. I have a 1993 2.0 Diplomat manual that I've owned since 1999, it has done 278k on the original engine/gearbox/clutch. It never failed on rust until 2018 - at 25 years old.

I live in Bulgaria. My father used to have an Opel Omega wich is the same as the Carlton. It was a 2.3 TDI 100hp. And it was automatic. So I gues that Opel had the automatic option back in the day. Great car. Great video.

My dad had 2 Carlton’s. An f plate 2.0i GL and K plate 20i CDX. Although the CDX was better spec the GL was faster and lasted better.

The Diesel has more torque that's how it won this drag race.

The good old Carlton .owned 2, a 1.8 then a 2.0 both estates. Great old barges. The reason it won the drag race was aerodynamics 😂😂. Jk . lol
