Charles leaves his face wide open when he jumps while striking he does it very often he’s always doing weird jumping knees sometimes kicks, but it leave him wide open every time I’ve went back and watched all his fights he almost always does it when standing and striking like almost every exchange and islam made him pay for it as soon as he plant his feet to jump islam saw it and threw his right hand and bam, Charles made a tactical error he should do everything the same but stop doing the jumping attacks against islam that won’t work against him and the going to your back going to guard on the ground, islam will follow you down there no problems that won’t work for you this time when your hurt going to your back so Charles didn’t realize that he couldn’t take those risk standing, breaking range being very aggressive with pressure taking risk with jumping attacks, it’s those things he couldn’t get away with in this fight and he failed too realize that soon enough, however Charles’s stand up game is all about breaking range with pressure and throwing high risk strikes like jumping knees leaving your face wide open but he didn’t care in the pasts fights because there was no threat on the ground like islam, so Charles could be crazy while striking that’s okay if I get caught I’ll just go down they won’t follow me and I’ll recover, however!!! Islam hurt Charles because of him doing those jumping attacks with his chin wide open in the air, Charles gets away with that against fighters that have no ground game, Charles can just go to his back in guard knowing his opponent won’t follow “it’s okay he thought” to be more aggressive during standup because if I get clipped I’ll just go down real quick, nope won’t work against islam, Charles you can’t be overly aggressive in this one because islam will follow you down just sit back pick your shots keep your back away from the fence and watch for takedown after the strike islam loves taking you down as he’s punching. Nope what did his fight corner say “more pressure be more aggressive… really coach ? Not one person in Charles’s corner knew they couldn’t play that game against islam I picked Charles to win because I thought he’d be smart enough to know he couldn’t just blitz islam or fight how he beat Dustin justin or chandler he should have changed his fight plan from being the crazy Charles but rather the cool calm collective.

Charlie was neutralizing Islam's wrestling, aside from losing control time, until he got rocked by a right hook and was unable to defend the submission. The sub was a direct result of that single strike. Idk what you think you're seeing. Charles shouldn't have dropped his guard for a flying knee. Props to Islam, hell of a well-rounded fighter. Edited to say that a different outcome was *possible* if Charles didn't get clipped & rocked in a way similar to his last few fights, and could be possible moving forward. I'm sure they worked on tightening his striking defense but it wasn't enough. Islam implemented his strategy masterfully.

The GOAT made a point here: 1. You have the advantage on the feet, but it’s difficult to touch your opponent and at the same time touching you. What would you do? 2. Resolve to wrestling (I realized that CO was actually the one initializing the body lock and was going to wrestle), but that’s your opponents strength. Another mistake. I just think during the fight, oliveira was panic and reckless has always even in his previous fights. But in this one, he was more panic because he can’t bait islam. Then in the end, on the feet, wrestling, clinching, and ground was all mistakes because you can’t seem to think straight and find his weakness

When Islam followed Charles on the ground I think that Charles understood that whatever he has trained will not work against Islam. I think it's one of those fights that you can run back 10 times and the outcome will be the same. Charles' entire striking philosophy was "We can trade as long as you don't 1 punch Ko me cuz I can lay down and rest and if you want to follow me on the ground I still win." It was an endless cycle. It got displayed really well in the Gaethje fight but this time the guy he fought... If you get knocked down you put him in a position that he wants to be and his entire game plan is.

What happened in my opinion is that all other fighters were scared of going to the ground with him. They let him slowly get back up got his composure back. But what Islam did was he didn’t allow him to get his composure. Attacked on the ground and he got a arm triangle. Charles would never get caught in that if he was composed. But he was out of it. He didn’t have a chance to gain his composure and gave up an arm triangle. That was the difference.

He actually outsmarted him. Watch a breakdown of the fight and you'll see that Islam threw a strike to bait Charles to bring his arm up to block anymore hits. As Charles arm is blocking, his elbow is high enough for Islam to slip his head under. Charles tries to bait him back by turning over so Islam can go for his back and lock hooks in but Islam held steady and Charles had to roll back and from there, the pressure began to be too much so that's why he tapped so quickly.

The Russian empire won that region by numbers only, it was a meat grinder, Shamil was eating the Russian soldiers, he knew exactly where to put his weight, pressure,a choke, an armbar, Russias answer was utter destruction and sheer force of numbers. As much as i love charles I dont think he respected Islams skill enough INSIDE the cage. He gave him zero respect in the standup and he paid for it , He didnt use his usual push kicks and teeps to the body and His approach just felt a bit rushed in general, I understand he thrives off offensive chaos but I think he coulda let the fight flow a bit more. I also think trying to take islam down with a bodylock/inside trip was a mistake as he got easily reversed and put on bottom even though he made it back to his feet which was impressive. Against the cage I saw that trip from Islam coming a million miles away i feel like charles could have broke reset and took the center instead of trying to beat islam at what he does best. Im just a fan not a fighter so all respect once again but that was just my take , I feel like Islam respected the threat Charles presented in every area of the fight standup/ground/clinch and fought accordingly , I just didnt get that from charles. Much respect to both men for a great fight.

What we saw is pretty much proves the blueprint in beating Charles. Charles is one of my top 3 all time favorite fighters, but there's no doubt in my mind that that was a blueprint on how to beat him. Just like the other great fighters, if they fight long enough, people will see holes on in their game. It's just that not everyone can exploit those hole. Basically, the theory is that the reason why Charles can recover after being clip was due to his opponents respecting and being afraid of his BJJ. So to beat him, what they need to do is to go down with him when he gets clipped. But that's easier to say and do, because the opponent need to be lucky or great striker to be able to clip Charles and be equally confident and skilled with ground game.

Our thought was that the guy with more confidence on the feet would win were a little disappointed Charles didn't let the hands go a little more. He looked fantastic out there as of course Islam did, but he's gifted with that long, rangy build that's perfect for striking and keeping opponents on the end of a quick series of blinding jabs or snapping out that long front kick. I think Chael is right. We all kind of assumed Islam isn't a good striker because he's never been tested before. Maybe pace is the problem, it would be interesting to know the VO2 max of the fighters before they get into the cage. From what I'm seeing it's not so much maximum energy, it's efficient use of energy and a rough grappling style from birth. Also don't skip back day. All of them have crazy ripped backs, I think a lot of their grappling prowess just comes from strong backs. What's unique is usually the remedy to a takedown is an uppercut, knee, upkick if already down, or front kick. However, these sambo/judo guys are doing different approaches. Khabib was cage heavy, but Islam is getting a ton of takedowns mid Octagon using clinches, throws, and leg sweeps/trips. The problem is Charles was using the basic ways to stop takedowns, kicks and knees, but that's not how you counter a sambo takedown. He threw a sloppy knee, Islam decked him with a counter and that was the fight. I do agree that Charles looked good, but Islam and that style of fighting is just on another level at the moment. Charles was mopping up the division in impressive fashion, Khabib had done it before him, but Islam just dominated and I don't know how they're going to be beat. I think we are going to see 2 more evolutions in MMA after this win. Very similar to how we saw the rise of the low calf kick and then the check counter that can break legs. First, more fighters are going to learn and use these takedowns. Second, counters will start being developed to stop the takedowns and tweaks to submissions will be developed to trap fighters who use those takedowns. From what I can tell the philosophy of MMA hasn't hit grappling yet. We have Judo, Sambo, BJJ, wrestling, and all their variants as the main 4. I think we are going to see a blending of the techniques of all 4 very soon into a comprehensive grappling art which is part of what One is doing. This fight has made me more excited for a BJJ vs. Sambo match but with just submission grappling rules that already exist. I'm sure there are ways to stop the takedowns used in sambo, it will just take people studying how they work and understanding how to apply the opposite force. Once taken down one thing I'm seeing is they are very heavy with their heads to control the opponents. They open themselves up to a lot of neck cranks or chokes, and some have even been close they just haven't quite secured it, but the guys doing the takedowns often get these submissions which tells me they know the tweaks but others haven't figured them out yet. Will be interesting to see if the rest of the roster can tweak it and start pulling off triangles, D'Arces, anacondas, head/arm chokes, guillotines, etc.

Spot on!...only people who understand martial arts beyond T.V knows nothing is better....it is how you use it and at what moment you use it... Islam rocked charles before the choke with a devastating left hook which took charls to the floor with stars 🌟 around the head......so Boxing was a crucial factor here which many forgot about...when the 🌟 going around your head...its easier to get choked or not? The only thing is Islam was not scared to go to the ground when charles got hit. Justin hit charles exactly the same way...but was scared to go to the ground and always charles used this to recover....but this time it was a elite grappler who happened to box well too.... so Boxing did the 70% of the Job..not Sambo or Jijitsu alone.....nothing works alone...its how you combine them and smartness will decide how to do it...this is why fighters are different even they study thr same techniques for years...it's the Intelligence.

When they first went down to the ground in full guard Charles immediately went into submission mode trying to get either a triangle or arm bar. Islam baited him a few times to reposition himself and ultimately caused Oliviera to question himself on the ground for sure. There were only two times in the fight where Charles outsmarted Islam. Once was in the clinch when he had Islam against the cage but Islam repositioned himself quite quickly. But the other one that stands out was Charles escaping from the ground and getting away from Islam. Besides that Islam answered literally everything Charles did throughout the entire fight.

@@sammycas4850 Yes, what you have explained is correct. And, I shouldn’t bad mouth Charles but the people were all predicting him to literally destroy Islam and basically saying, Islam is an amateur without even fighting someone in the top 5 or 10. Charles agreed. But, I knew why he agreed. Charles wanted a few more easy fights ( to increase his name and financial status) by wanting to fight a washed up Connor and who ever else before he fought such a competitive fighter like Islam. You could see after the fight when he said, Dana, I always did what you want now give me a chance, ( not verbatim) because he knew that once you lose and lose the title and the title of being a changed fighter tomorrow you are no longer on The front page but on the back page and it’s hard to make the kinda money, fame and record you would have if you won. Had Charles not said the sky little things he did I would have respected him more. Whatever, Good observation from you SammyCas.

Let’s just make Charles versus Dariush for a number one contender fight. If Charles can get through Dariush, then put them back in there with Islam. I think they were two mistakes the Charles made, when he opened up with a flying crane kick, it was obvious he was not playing patient or prepared to make it a five round fight (which to be fair, I don’t think he can win on points against Islam.) that being said, he also pulled guard on Islam , maybe because he couldn’t take him down and Land on top but that was a huge tactical error, cost him the first round, and any sense of momentum going into the second.
