Restructuring Nigeria: Scrapping 36 States for Regionalism

In this eye-opening interview, we sit down with Akin Fapohunda, a member of the House of Afenifere in Abuja, to discuss his controversial draft bill proposing the scrapping of Nigeria's 36 states in favour of a regional system of government. Fapohunda shares his vision for the future of Nigeria under this new structure and addresses concerns about potential marginalization, resource control, and the concentration of power. We also explore the fate of state governments and civil servants if this bill were to pass, and consider the potential implications for Nigeria's unity. Join us as we unpack this thought-provoking proposal and its potential impact on the nation. Watch now to gain insight into this contentious issue and decide for yourself where you stand on the matter.

The truth is that most Nigerians wants this, it's the political ruling class that are gaining from the immense corruption going on that are against regional government. We need to push for this idea to become reality because it will solve most of the current problems Nigeria is facing. Thank you sir for coming up with this.

This is a typical way to subjugate and marginalize minorities in Nigeria. Nigerian leaders should be thinking of making life livable for the common people of Nigeria instead of delving into areas the president hasn’t been mandated by electing him into office as president. You obviously didn't understand how regionalization works. The current system from the local government, state and all the way to the federal level are too centralized and expensive to run. Everything needs to be decentralized and frees up the resources for each region and subregion to develops itself. The new system puts the power in the people's hands not in the hands of the prodigal sons and daughters you call politicians across Nigeria syphoning our resources. The people need to be reeducated and trained in order to free their brain from the corruptions the current system has stuffed in their head. You get it now?

Each region will have a PM/President and each state will still have a governor, all revenue will be allocated to each region EQUALLY.. and each state within thier respective region will be responsible of investing and building/improving their own infrastructure..etc.. this is the best solution to alleviate this ongoing non-sense...

Nigerian never stopped to amaze me. Today all most every tribe has it’s own state and yet they have not seen progress in their livelihood and you people are advocating for regional governments to bring progress? Who stopped the states from generating their revenue now that you are thinking they will do under regional governments? These nomenclature’s doesn’t matter at all as long as you have not provided a level playing field for every Nigerian to explore their potentials based on equality as citizens of Nigeria. The clogging factor fueling of all the problems in Nigeria today first is the uncontrollable corruption in all the sectors of governance in the country and unashamed nepotism cutting across all the ethnic groups. Our education has done very little if it has done anything to assist our leaders in understanding what entails leadership and patriotism without putting emphasis on tribe, religion and where someone comes from as long as he delivers a good result. Unless we learn not to be influenced by tribe, religion and region in our decision making to better this country, no amount of regions you created will solve these problems. Don’t forget with the regions you are planning to create will still have the same Nigerian problems that force you to create the regions will be staring at you again. Do you create another region from the regions you created? Let us not deceive ourselves but address the real problems facing Nigeria.

Those rogues in Abuja and state and local government offices have seen this coming long time ago, that's why they have been borrowing and looting. They also knew quite well that they will never be able to manage the growing number of the unemployed youth that are getting restless by the day. Their only hope to remain one country is do what the people want, or the country will break and everyone will go their separate ways and we may never remain friends afterwards. The recent Lekki Toll Gate incident, Yoruba Nation, and Biafra movements shook them to the core so they know the people are fed up with them. They should be grateful to Dr Fapounda and like minded people tendering the template for the solution they need to save them of what the youth will to them soomer or later. Thank you Dr Fapounda,

This idea would really help to solve the problem of Biafra cus if the Igbos are given their own regions to take care of there wouldn't be the call for Biafra to be created and it will also help other states but the Northern states will not agree to this cus that would mean the end of oil money for them

This was what Ojukwu and Gowon agreed on in Aburi, Ghana, then Gowon turned around and failed to honour it.. Also Nnamdi Kanu proposed this as the only reason he can stop Biafra agitation!

Only foolish Northerners will object. Most will definitely agree to it. Most of the oil money goes to Southern States at moment anyway. A regional system will allow the North to exploit its own natural resources. The idea that Northerners will reject this is Biafra propaganda.

When it comes to mineral resources, the North is wealthier than the South. Just that the British didn't explore these resources before independence like they discovered oil in 1958. The North will start mining whenever they're ready

This idea is dreaded by the present politicians who are profiting from the present system. But we need to put our intelligence into action to iron out all the grey areas. All necessary questions most be asked and solution proffered to it. We must put brilliant mind together who will think through every necessary negative scenario or development that can come up then put constitution (law) in place that will mitigate against such act.

I literally was just having a discussion about regional government or state autonomy. On the surface, it sounds like marginalization, however, the advantages of regionalization or state autonomy will lead to a massive growth. Think about the drop in the cost of governance if politicians are compensated based on the IGR of thier Sate. The states that will not want this are the one that benefits from the current system the most. Product nothing, contribute nothing to GDP, but still gets same allocation and scompesations as the governors that do the most.

On the alternative, I think 36states are closer to the people than regional system, we will now have to wait for Anambra before things are done Asaba or waiting for Kaduna for actions to be taking in Sokoto or Katsina, or waiting for Ibadan before Ondo can do anything. What we need in my humble opinion is more power to the people to hold their Governor responsible.

It is due to ignorance and low level of educational system that has made a lot of states not see what blessings are underneath them and it’s a problem. A serious one for that matter

The United State has 50 states that are working independently fine. What Nigeria needs is to amend the constitution to allows each state to be autonomous. If the region was so good and working as expected why was the coup that changed the situation to where the country is today. If there country decides to regionalism how do you determine which state belong to which region? Will this be based on ethnicity which will bring more problem to the country than it is now and how do you decide which city should be the seat of the government? Already individuals in Lagos state are already saying they can never be part of the Western region. There are many states across the country that would take similar position. All the states have been striving to compete with each other in terms of development and some states have done much better than the others and will resist giving up what they have acquired. Giving the states autonomy through constitutional amendment is the best approach to avoid chaos.
