Senate Okays Ban on Open Grazing, Northern Senators Disagree

The age-long practice of open grazing, which involves moving cattle from one place to another to feed, is fast becoming a burden for Nigeria. A bill to ban open grazing in the country generated heated debates among senators. The proposed bill, sponsored by Senator Titus Zam, seeks to establish national agencies for Ranch Management to tackle disputes between herders and farmers. The bill however met opposition from some northern Senators, who described it as discriminatory by proposing to restrict herders to a particular geographical location.

The Senate is just wasting their time debating the farmer and herders issues. Tinubu should just sign an executive order banning the open grazing in Nigeria. If Shariah law is activated against alcohol why should anti -grazing not be banned?

I always play a scenario in my head where I, a farmer from South western Nigeria suddenly up and go to Zsmfara/Sokoto/any other northern Nigeria state and start farming on land that belongs to the locals at will, without purchasing land from anybody and at no cost to me! How and where does that happen? Anyone who ever watched old American western movies would understand how water rights, trespassing and damage to private property helped shape and strengthen the rights to keep and bear arms in that country. In Nigeria, it seems the law turns a blind eye when northern herders bear arms (assault rifles most commonly) while it's criminal for southern crop farmers to keep or bear arms to protect their investments. These armed herders actually give free rein to their cattle to enter crop farms in the south, feed on planted maize crops and they even uproot crops like cassava, cocoyam etc to feed their animals. Of course they are armed. How then can there be peace? The country is potentially a timebomb waiting to explode under these circumstances. I pray our leadership gathers the will and courage to decisively defuse the situation before it's too late.

See how he keeps emphasizing, and repeating that he does not understand why the people concerned are "opposed to cattle ranching," and instead favoring "open grazing?" He even makes excuses for them that they are just 'used to the old way of doing things,' which is why they are objecting to cattle ranching? He knows nothing could be so farther away from the truth. Ranching is a modern way of animal husbandry as a business Cattle rearing is a multimillion industry that should provide employment to citizens through 3 major industries that can be created through it namely:- Milk industry, leather industry and cornbeef industry. All these industries will add to the gdp of the nation, raise the standard of living of the people and pull the majority of the people out of extreme poverty. Actually, ranching should be whole heartedly emblaced by these Senators who knows better because it will not only increase their personal income , that of their employees, boost the nations gdp through export of produce from those industries but also eliminate illiteracy among their people and enable those kids who move cattles around the forest to discover their talents and abilities. Culture of any people is dynamic and therefore evolves, so you can not say the fulanis don't want to go to school, they don't want house while the children the same senators ( Fulanis) are schooling not only in Nigeria but also in the best institutions of the advanced world. These argument of these northern senators shows that they are the reason for the backwardness of the North in all indexes of human developments deliberately. Senator Akpabio, this bill must pass faster than that of the national anthem and you shall be remembered for it by all well meaning Nigerians as your greatest achievement as a law maker.

The south has walked into a carefully laid trap. The south is unable to feed itself and have to depend on others on basic foodstuff when the south is mainly fertile and arable. There’s the adage that says ”He who pays the piper dictates the tune .It has very deep political undertones. How can farmers in the south and middle belt areas cultivate their lands with their time and labor only to have them eaten up by cattle and the government appears impotent to act. Farmers livelihood are destroyed and in some instances farmers killed without any consequences. Farmers in the south have been sacked from their farms and the suppliers from the north are the only winners. The government says that every Nigerian has a right to move to any part of the country and do business there. Does that include destroying other citizen’s livelihood to promote others? They supply food at cut throat or blackmail prices yet we in the south have no choice but to buy since in the south can no longer farm without fear. Remove this fear or risk and the prices of food stuff will come down considerably. All the sentiments about open grazing is a cover for seizing other peoples land sooner or later.

To be frank I am a northerner and i was not really happy with the bill at first because i know its not easy to rear so many cows in one place some have over 1000, some 2000 but after listening to the reasons and disadvantages i believe its better to ban it, over and above that i just remembered that Islamically our prophet has prohibited any rearing that will make you destroy your neighbor's or anybody's property. So magana ya ƙare. This is the right thing to do. What just remains for us to pray the nomads abide by it, because most of them don't even pray regularly or take time to learn Islamic teachings. So even if it's banned it won't be as easy as we might think. And for the senators objecting the law, i believe they're trying to defend the interest of their people so let's not insult them, they have nothing to gain mostly from it, let's just pray they understand and if anyone has link to them try explaining respectfully, no human being is perfect. May God help us all.....Amen

The more this is debated, the more we are giving relevance to cattle business and undermining other private businesses. Their should be an executive order against open grazing. The Importance of Banning Open Grazing in Nigeria: A Solution to Food Insecurity, Health Risks, and Socio-Economic Challenges In Nigeria, the issue of open grazing by herders has been a long-standing problem that has led to numerous conflicts, food insecurity, and health risks. The practice of allowing herders to graze their animals on farmlands has resulted in the destruction of crops, leading to a significant increase in the prices of food stuff. This, in turn, has exacerbated the already high levels of food insecurity in the country. Moreover, the open grazing of animals has posed significant health risks to both humans and animals. The animals can spread diseases such as anthrax, brucellosis, and rabies, which can have devastating consequences on human health. Additionally, the presence of open grazing animals in farmlands can lead to contamination of water sources, soil pollution, and air pollution. The nomadic lifestyle, which was once a necessary adaptation for many herders, is no longer practical or sustainable in the 21st century. With modern technology and infrastructure, it is now possible to maintain a ranch or farm without having to constantly move from one location to another. This approach would not only reduce the risk of conflict between farmers and herders but also promote a more sustainable and responsible use of natural resources. The owners of these animals are primarily responsible for their care and maintenance. It is not the responsibility of the government to provide for the grazing needs of these animals. The government should instead focus on providing regulations and laws that promote sustainable agriculture and responsible animal husbandry. In recent years, millions of farmers have been forced to abandon their farms due to the destruction of their crops by herders. Many have had to turn to alternative means of livelihood, such as charcoal farming, which is not only illegal but also poses a significant threat to climate change. The banning of open grazing would not only benefit farmers but also have a positive impact on the country as a whole. With the destruction of crops reduced, food prices would decrease, and food security would be improved. The government would also gain from increased revenue generated from taxes paid by farmers and ranchers. In conclusion, the banning of open grazing is a necessary step towards addressing the issues of food insecurity, health risks, and socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. It is essential for the government to regulate laws that promote sustainable agriculture and responsible animal husbandry. The owners of these animals should take responsibility for their care and maintenance, rather than relying on the government. By doing so, millions of farmers will be able to return to their farms, food prices will decrease, and the country will reap numerous benefits. Benefits of Banning Open Grazing: 1.Improved Food Security: With the destruction of crops reduced, food prices will decrease, and food security will be improved. 2. Increased Revenue: The government will gain from increased revenue generated from taxes paid by farmers and ranchers. 3. Reduced Health Risks: The ban on open grazing will reduce the risk of disease transmission between humans and animals. 4. Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture: The ban will promote sustainable agriculture practices and responsible animal husbandry. 5. Encouragement of Ranching: The ban will encourage herders to adopt ranching practices, which are more sustainable and responsible. 6. Reduced Conflict: The ban will reduce conflict between farmers and herders, promoting a more peaceful coexistence. 7. Protection of Natural Resources: The ban will protect natural resources such as water sources, soil, and air from pollution. 8. Climate Change Mitigation: The ban will reduce the risk of climate change by promoting sustainable agriculture practices. Overall, banning open grazing is a necessary step towards addressing the complex issues facing Nigeria's agricultural sector. By promoting sustainable agriculture practices and responsible animal husbandry, we can ensure a more secure and prosperous future for our country.

It should be embarrassing to the northern senators to kick against a bill that would reduce the tension between the farmers and herders in the north. How long do they intend to continue to restrict the region to nomadic way of life? Are they afraid of the consequences if seen to be supporting the bill? If that is the case they are not fit to be representative of the majority in the north. There is nothing discriminatory about the bill because if the people in the north decide to go against the law they can but the will face the consequence s violate the law. The southern part of the country will ensure that anyone that is in the business of raising and trading in cattle will abide by the law as simple as that. Laws are made to be opened and not violated. The herdsmen carrying AK 47 around the country by itself is already a violation of the law in the country, so also is the banditry, kidnapping and terrorism that are all criminal activities in the north. This is what the Senators should be concerned about instead arguing to continue to keep their own people in the dark. How many countries in Africa are farmers and herders having the problems and killings that occur in Nigeria, Come on Northern Senators wake and stop arguing blindly, this is a bill that is of interest to the people that you represent mostly.

I think some of these old fashioned northern senators are given undue recognition. They can't continue to be allowed to drag the wheels of this country backward. For now they need to be boycotted in most of this forward-thinking bills that that they always tend to resist for regional, political or religious reasons

Hm. The more you look the less you see. It's not all about feeding their cows. There is more to it otherwise why would the hearders refuse to see the benefits ranching offers them that roaming doesn't. They cry they are not educated, ranching offers that opportunity. Ranching means more money in their pockets, makes them better human beings with settled lives. Who would deny themselves such goodies if not for an ulterior motive? .

Open grazing should be banned just as simple as that ! These herders are killers, rappers and kidnappers. They are mainly from other countries. They have no respect for human lives! This type of grazing should be banned. I hope that the Senators would pass the bill for the President to signe without delay. No country is doing open grazing and the cows are skinny due to thousands of miles of trekking. It is time for Nigeria and Nigerians do things respectively without hurtting one another. ❤😊 Unity is possible if things are done well.

Government should never get involved in a private business. And there is no land for fulani ranching in Yoruba land. We had our ranch before military destroyed them. We will do our ranch by ourselves without the fulani.

I think for Nigerians to embrace ranching, there should be a proper provisions on what make ranching successful. We can start by providing Agro-banking facilities, I mean learn from South Africa, Zimbabwe and other developed country on how. For crying out loud we have professors of agriculture, they need to start educating and acting. Lord don't we want to advance in that country call Nigeria????

Before the civil war, there were cattle ranches in Eastern region of Nigeria. I knew the Obudu cattle ranch in now Cross River state as well as Chief Moffi's ranch at Gakem in Ogoja, also in Cross River state. It is the right thing to do.

Statistics does not mean anything to some Northerners. Ranching is the best by all statistics but it doesn't matter to them. If statistics were something to them, Sharia law would have been discarded long ago because we have seen what it has turned Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe etc into (dens of banditry and terrorism).
