Restoring Vintage Mego Batman Figures - Broken Knee Pins, Restring, Paint and Clothed! - Part 3
Ойын-сауық
I picked up four 1970s MEGO Batman figures a while back. They're 40 plus years old and need some restoration.
From rags to riches.
In this third and final part, we tackle the bodies. We replace broken knee pins and restring Robin. Finally, all the figures are dressed with the restored clothing from part 2.
Looking good!!

Looks great! I don't collect Mego figures, I'm mostly a 60s-70s-80s Barbie collector, but I love watching all kinds of restorations like these. I think I have a pair of those Robin boots in my stash of bits and pieces, I always wondered what doll they went to.

Nice restorations, I have done a fair few of these, to make capes and stickers I used Toy Polloi templates and I went to Poundland and purchased some Umbrellas, the colours match perfectly for Batman and Superman and they are pretty much the same material, gets expensive shipping from the USA
@VintageToyRush
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! 🤘 Great tip for sourcing the material!! Would never have thought of that 👍 Shipping just getting more expensive by the day - so I try to batch up a pile of things and send them over in a single parcel !!
What an absolutely stunning video, Dave! Your your production values, scene selection, and music are all just fantastic! I enjoyed watching this so much, and especially that funky ending song! And about these figures: I love watching you restore these because I had a few of these "oven-mitt" super heroes when I was a kid and they are amongst my memories of my first toys, along with the Pkanet of the Apes figures, before Star Wars figures became a thing. I'm especially impressed with your high level of patience in re-stringing that Robin. I don't think I could ever do that. And the fix on Batman's knees? That was brilliant and I never would have been able to accomplish it myself. Once again, awesome video, Dave! Thanks for taking us on the journey!

Ah thanks Paul for your kind words!! 🙏 These are my favourite kind of videos to produce - I feel there's some longevity to them and perhaps can be helpful for others so don't mind putting in that extra effort on the production! The Mego figures have a real charm, and I do laugh at those oven mitts 🤣 Most of the time on these videos, I'm doing repairs for the first time, so am learning on the job! The next re-string would probably take 5 mins 🤘 And that knee challenge, just up my street - keeps the brain working! Thanks for watching as always!! 👍
Is it intentional that the "Kraken" appears after you say let's "crack on" in your videos? Nice pun. Great restoration Dave. I hope the movie lives up to the hype and is a suitable reward.

Excellent ideas , Would you know how to undo the rivets of the hands of the type 1 Mego body?.
@VintageToyRush
9 ай бұрын
Usually rivets need to be drilled out. So I wouldn't recommend unless you want to take the risk of damaging the plastic. I don't have one in front of me right now so there could be a less dramatic way 👍
Really sweet restoration! Enjoyed it. Also the first 2 were pretty interesting. You did some really awesome work on these. Looks like you had just bought them from back in the day. What's the name of the song at the end of the video?

Amazing restorations. When you re-strung Robin the third and final time, what did you do differently that time to get both the torso to not twist AND the legs to not spread out so much? Thanks!
@VintageToyRush
Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment 🤘 Just had to watch that part again 🤣 on the 3rd attempt, I did not cross the string in the torso, so it goes up the left side, through the left arm, across to right arm, down right side. Then for the legs, the trick is to feed the string over the peg in the pelvis which will help stop the legs from spreading. Hope that helps 👍

What type of paint and sheen(gloss,semi matte) used for the heads?
@VintageToyRush
Жыл бұрын
For this one, I think I used Humbrol acrylic paints, generally matt, sometimes satin. If I need a gloss, I can always cover in a clear acrylic. When restoring Mego heads, I brush on the minimal amount of paint possible 👍
I found a mego Batman whose arm is disloged from his socket. Is taht repairable?
@VintageToyRush
Жыл бұрын
Very likely 👍 It will depend on exactly what's wrong, but if the arms are connected via elastic, you can replace the elastic as shown in this video. If they're connected by a joint and not damaged in any way, you may be able to push it back on. You're welcome to message me on twitter / instagram with a photo if you wish, and then we can see exactly what's up. Cheers! 🤘

Hello Dave I've restung a few megos and it's totally unnecessary to remove heads. I Only watched this to see if you removed the head, it's pointless and can cause damage to the figure. These type one's are better restrung with the heads left on.
@VintageToyRush
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, so you only watched this video to see if I removed the heads 🤣 It might be unnecessary, but I still went ahead with it, as I was painting as well. If you watch some of my other restoration videos, you'll see I like to completely dismantle old toys. It's how I do it and others find it useful and informative. Thanks for watching 👍
@jamesflaherty2787
2 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave yes I have now watched the rest of the video however maybe I should of been clearer on the figures I was referring to. The mego Planet of the apes line are particularly difficult to remove the heads and prone to tearing. I ruined a few of these taking the heads off. My own original Dr zaius I didn't remove the head and found I could restring perfectly without the extra work of messing about with the head. However I didn't do any paint work and left the head in play worn condition. My point is purely for restringing it's best not to remove heads. All the best jim
