I was not a fan of this transport either, but after working with several of them I began to appreciate how much thought went into modular assembly, ease of repair, and choice of materials in right places...it's still not perfect (no deck is)...but does an amazing job despite light weight flywheels

The RS-B965 Euro version had permalloy heads instead of amorphous, and those high frequency peaking caps are for that version. But nice to have the spot for them if/when needed

It's a nice machine, transport not in the TCM-200D league but still delivering after 30odd years. And despite all odds it shows exactly what I claim about Technics decks: they don't shift over time. You get a machine, be an auto-reverse double or a single deck and they come after 30odd years still in phase and running smoothly. I've never had the pleasure of getting a SONY which did not need serious tweaking: the heads are usually all over the place, the guides are misaligned and even the erase heads seem mounted skewed from the factory, just like the dotted SONY stickers. One of the reasons why I stopped making and listening to cassettes back then was because Sony didn't really seem to bother to properly align their own decks. It must be understood that Technics was never into cassette decks as Sony, Aiwa or Nakamichi for that matter. The RS-B965 and offspring is a sort of TC-KA6 in Sony's history lineup: the last of the line and not aimed at being the finest on the market. Their most serious decks are the RS-M95 for the early 80s, the RS-B100 for the mid-80s and RS-B905 for the late 80s.

Actually RS-M280 not RS-M95 and RS-B100 not RS-B965 respectively in the M- and the B- series.

@@LapisandHamtarolover You're absolutely right, the M280 is from the 80s, the M95 is from a couple of years earlier. Sorry for the initial mess up where I called M100 and M905 (non existing models in the series). It's a nice arguing when sombody knows Technics(es).

At 33m14s of the video where you placed the 330pf capacitors, my Technics RS-B965 has a 1.51 Ohm resistor.

sorry, if it had a 1 oHm resistor it would kill the whole sound. Head resistance is 300 Ohm.

Did you replace the 2x 10/16 caps on the DD board? That may be the reason for the high W&F. Mine are both .035%. (The 10/25 ones are not critical)

The caps were fine, no any sign of leak. There are may be multiple reasons for elevated W&F

hi worked on alot of cassette deck you drill out where the small pin has break of you driill it out with a micro drill and re pin it it with a micro pin brass i buy a brass bar stock do test run on some ploy to get it to fit right the in side is very like rs range decks this can be fixed easy never use glue it never hold you get to go by fit to hold the parts betacam is my bag

Hello. I really like your videos. I have one of these and it needs to change the pinch rollers. Do you have his measurements? I placed a similar one but did not have a satisfactory result. At the end of the tape the speed drops a lot. I also touched the belt but it didn't fix it.

The right one is standard 13x8x2mm. However the left one is a problem, it is just 9x6x? mm (sorry, I did not measure the shaft diameter). Also, I mentioned that the spring on the left pinch roller is so weak that I do not think it works the same way as in the other two capstan decks. Panasonic produced only single capstan decks and I would not consider 965 a successful two capstan implementation.

@@canalavmix 1. Replace electrolyte capacitors at the DD board 2. If it will jot help - check the brass bearings on the capstans. This may mean they not lubed or worn.

I told in a video that this deck has no capacitors installed. They are on a schematic but marked as for a limited set of regions only. The Schematic has values of 150 pF. However, considering a drop of 3.5 dB from the proper response, I decided to install 330 pF. And it was a proper decision. Now deck performs within 1 dB over the whole range. If you struggle to understand my accent, you may use subtitles. KZread has automatically generated.

I just did the service and repair on the same Panasonic RS-B965 ( you can see in my videos ) and still have some issues. The buttons do not correspond to assigned functions. So i press counter reset and it does counter mode, i press dolby B and engages dolby C, press Tape monitor it does CD direst and so on and so forth. I did find some residue on the boards that have display and buttons on them. I assume some leaking capacitors? Have you seen such issues, any tips?

Deoxidize the large connector between boards. And check the rest on the indicator board.

@@hifirulezzz I've done that, cleaned all 4 connectors where front plate boards plug into the main board. Cleaned all the switches too.

well, then you should check the voltages on the CPU. All buttons are connected via resistors to provide fewer lines to the CPU. As a result, the CPU heavily relies on the voltage levels when the button is depressed.
