Cassette tape decks sold after CD players came on the scene generally were cheaply manufactured and best avoided. Recently I worked on a Bang & Olufsen which used a Philips cassette mechanism, which was made almost entirely of plastic. The reel drive gear was crumbled, of course.
je to 100% identický so sony tc-WR870
Old Tandberg Gold. Nice to see, someone taking care of it, so it still can be enjoyed! Norwegian quality!
just picked up a couple 224's that have wood sides! Going to try and set one up with my 3 3/4 IPS reel to reel
Hi - I'm a big fan of yours and watch your videos avidly. You are doing an amazing job and I have learned and dismantled a lot from you, according to the video. If you don't mind, please help me with some advice, because I don't know what to do anymore: I have a Sony tc-k750es, Transport TCM-200, which, only in Play, does not spin the take-up reel. The belts and rollers are new. Perfect FF and REW. Eject the cassette normally. Capstan ok. Even AMS works: raise the heads, the take-up rotates and searches for the song. Then in normal Play, the heads rise, but the take-up reel, no! All the microswitches work ok. The reel motor does not receive voltage at Play. Please advice, tips. Something electronic? The integrated control M50964-224SP? Any transistor? Thank you and sorry.
I have met this issue once with a Sony 909. When I checked the level on the play output of the CPU it was not changing and did not engage the reel motor. The only solution I thought of was to use a signal from the playback LED and route it to control the reel motor circuit. As the LED is controlled by the display CPU and both CPUs communicate via a service bus.
@@hifirulezzz Hi. I solved the problem. :) I again disassembled the whole mechanism and the big cam wheel, it was not well placed. and don't engage one microswitch. Thanks for the answer and keep up the good work.
I really believe that is top of 2 cassette decks style and probably quality. Every time I see it I get excited. What a beautiful combination of aluminum panel with many buttons and glass cassette doors (not like later decks with mouse-hole-like window). You can see all your tapes on the go and just see them. Only missing is tape backlight, but not so crucial. Have WR950 for years "like new" condition, purchased from Japan auction (100V 🙂)when prices were quite low for double decks because everyone was hunting for single cassette. Later found original remote control (paid for it almost same as for deck O..O). I also have TC-WR820. But if I decide one to go, that would definitely be WR820.
Hi! Regarding the issue with rewind, try to clean the pads on the T shape lever and the tension band. I clean mine with soap and warm water and let them dry overnight. Also re the DDS 3 tape I read on the forums that should not be used because the tape is very thin and stress the mechanism. Only DDS 1 of 60 meters (120 minutes) you can use. The reason why its stopping at 2 hours is probably because the end of tape marker is set. You can try to erase it.
Wonderful job and Many thanks
Чем чистить лучше?
I totally agree. I have a small stash of last gen unopened TDK MA. I opened one up last month and recorded music on the entire tape on my Dragon. When the Dragon played back side B in reverse mode, the NAAC started sounding like a machine gun. The shell is not good. I tested the Dragon with early 90's and all editions of the 80's MA without any issues.
Wow, what a complicated mechanism . Great video keep them coming.
The Akai is the most solid... the bass has a drag
I am super impressed you chose four play for your sample playback. I still have my Sony portable, although I sold my full-size machine some time ago. I miss this format it did sound really good, and I liked the way it allowed you to move stuff around on the Disk. I used to tecord my favourite radio station and then edit the tracks later using a connected keyboard, really neat. Congrats, you have a nice collection.
From what I can see about the BX-300 tansport it has some simliarities to the some of the other BX series decks. I just got through servicing the transport on a BX-150 and re-assembled and it will not run (it did work before the service). I took out the cam motor and noted its position so I could put it back correctly. Upon application of power the capstan motor does run for a very short time. I can manual close the contacts of the cam leaf switch with the Gray wire on the cam motor and it will run a short time and then stop. I have put this transport into a BX-2 which is functional and the transport behaves exactly same. I have checked all leads/connectors and leaf switches and cannot find any “Open” connections. I believe that is a timing issue with the cam motor but I have doubled checked the cam position and it still will not run. I have tested all of the motors and they all run smothly. I have applied a external DC supply to the Cam motor and I can drive the tapes heads up and down without any problem. It is possible that the "Shut Off" circuit is casuing an issue? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you very much for this well done detailed and precise video. I could fix the same issue on my bx-300. Unfortunately I lost a washer while doing it (L15 - 1.8 x 3.2 x 0.5 - 0E03049A). Any idea where I can find these kind of 'oring' ? Thank you very much for all your videos !
What are the WF values on this mech ? I have a new one in White.

the battle between 838 and 93 when thk
838 is the same as 93 minus automatic tuning, tape transport, heads, and electronics are the same. I recapped and will soon do a comparison between 91 and 838.
@@hifirulezzz thk
Nice collection. That is cool you found a replacement battery for the AIWA player. They all sound very nice. On another note, I see you have US power plugs on that power strip. Does that mean your repair shop is located in the USA?
this is my favorite nakamichi deck ,maybe because i paid for it ,i´m still using it almost everyday as i have been recording compilations and hear them more than cds or records and my deck on my most recent system bought since 2020. Those cassettes were sony selling cheap cassettes and made them type IV but as an example the UX-PRO was almost doble the price, the metal cassette from sony by excelence is the metal master before was the metal-es, the XR and XS are average and in a few listening it will sound not good as when one records it
How do you connect your Mac to the deck? Any interface?
CR-7 has less tape noise, and also has more precise sound. Z9 - sounds more analogue. I like CR-70
CT 1100 sounds right....9x had some equalization
838 vs 93 ????
Hello video between 838 and 93, thank you, your videos are very good.
Those purple caps must be replaced
nonsense video:-(
You are unwelcome on my channel.Even if you don't like it it is not a reason to be rude

Just beautiful pieces of machinery. Truly a piece of art.
T-838 non e' equivalente del CT-93,CT-93 ha dolby s,hx pro,autocalibrazione
Schematic and sound wise are the very same. Just one more IC and few passive parts for automatic tuning. And I would always prefer manual tuning over automatic. Dolby S is a gimmick, does not matter.
@@hifirulezzz non sto parlando dello schema e del suono,ma di quello che ho detto nel primo commento. anch'io preferisco la calibrazione manuale e non tollero il dolby s
those sony were very bad and cheaper than a UX-pro but i know the diference between those three the double is kind of in your face sound ,the other two have deeper sound but the CT-959 or T-838 as the amourphous heads who can make a copy with more real sound as in instruments being played near you, or 2D, 3D and 3Deeper, from top to bottom, but the sony metal XR and XS are a very bad cassette it might sound good but far from the UX-pro or sa-x both type II ,metal good tapes from sony were the metal-ES and metal master ,the XS and XR were cheaper and not good as any chrome tape people bought them but with a very short quality recording as in after some listenings become not that good sounding also sold very cheap when new, a sony HF-S type I was more expensive
now i notice the T-838 as not the reference cassette deck on the insert casing
I do have 2 DTC-500,1 DTC-700 & other one that they need the gears. My Question is: Where do you get them?
To make it easier, couldn't you cut the power transformer wires and put connectors on them? Looks to be only 11 wires. Would only take a few minutes. Thanks for taking the time to do the video. Always enjoy them...
680 , zx-9, 700 zxl in that order
Have you ever tried Audio Note Kaisei capacitors?
These are not available in the USA distribution chains.
I just checked prices - it is ridiculous to pay that $$$$$ to improve cassette deck.
How can I contact you? I have 890ES as original owner , and after 25 yrs would love to test and service it , how mucb would such service cost ? Unit was sitting in a closet for 15 yrs 🥴

Nice job. I wonder to replace caps in my ct-93. Could you tell which section on the motherboard is responsible to light ilumination display? I would be greatful for that. Kind regards. And keep going relentlessly to improve decks sound to a masterpiece.
Two voltages are coming to display - 5.3V to heat the spiral to allow electrons to fly and -23V which makes elements lit. Both voltages are coming directly from the power supply. No Fuses on the way, just a single transistor Q743.
You may also want to check C742 just for the case. it is 100 uF 50V
Thank you for your help. I'm going to look after that.
T-838 wins by a country mile. Full bodied and highly detailed. CT-91a slightly pinched sound. T-555WR slightly distorted veil but very little.
Agree
agree also,it´s true
Thanks for the update on the previous video ( I missed this one) and makes it all more clear now. I was just wondering where the other two dials stand for, if the upper grey dials are for the high frequency response, could it be the dials below that are for the lower frequencies? They're on the same position, same components and lay-out for L & R channels, so probably both frequency fine tuning dials. Have you ever tried these?
Other two are bias filters to prevent it from going to the record amplifier.
Спасибо за видео,интересное сравнение дек.Мне понравилось звучание СТ-91
it´s a CT-91A the A has calibration knobs and not using amourphous heads, and it´s a URUSHI version of the CT-939MKII
Just got myself a DR-2, I've tried your settings, but no matter how far I turn those dials, I can't hear or messure any difference. I used NAK T-100 to messure all frequencies, in their original positions and 360 counter clockwise like suggested, but no difference what so ever. So, I've set it all back to their original position.
I made a later video where I was measuring how this affect the signal and yes, I put it back. these coils affect only high frequencies response.
@@hifirulezzz OK, haven't seen that video yet. Thanks for the update.
wowwww!...wonderful!!💯💯💯
Uau! Great "sounds"! So pleasant I could be all day listening! At 22:27 as a reference point, it’s noticeable when previous music is finishing a "hiss" starts growing and stays at a certain level during the "silence" between the tracks. At the moment the next music starts that " hiss" suddenly fades out almost disappearing and be indetectable as the music's playing. Why is this happening? (Any Dolby effect?). And once more, for share with us your good taste for music, playing through those untold "old" machines that a lot of people never believe could sound so beautifully and so accurate, THANKS!
No, this is how Garage Band from Apple records - it increases sensitivity in sound absence
@@hifirulezzz Ok! Now I'm clear! Thanks for reply.
the hiss only exists in this decks if magnetised heads or dirty also the cassettes are really bad and were cheaper
no hiss in this recorders ,only if the heads are dirty or magnatised but the cassettes are very bad ones so might be from the cheap cassettes as the chrome ones from sony were more expensive, or the original recording as it
Большая работа проделана с Деками , отлично звучат.
I have 890ES , I'm original owner , have not turned it on in 9 years , it use to wrinkle the tape after 2 yrs of ownership and I had Sony Service it and it stopped doing it but occasionally it did it again . Do you think you could look at it and inspect it and service what would be needed ? Are parts still available, belts etc? I may have recorded maybe 100 tapes on it . Where are you located and how much is your service ?
The middle one sounds better than bottom. Dual-well isn’t audiophile.
Pioneer in the middle sounds more crystal, looks like has higher resolution in all specter! Definitely Pioneer in the middle!
the bottom one as improved sound both good but the bottom one was more evolved and sounded more close to the source if a good cd or record was recorded, they are both top end decks ,one from late 80´s other from 91the CT-959 wich only differs a litle from the CT-979 in the calibration method, the bottom one in it´s URUSHI version is the incrdible good CT-93, no nakamichi comes near it and i have them so i know and here on youtube the sound is far from the real sound
You have a rare one that will play with no tape in it. I find all my decks will not play with no tape. So I have to do it all the hard way.
Whichever DAC you are using to get the analog out, why not channel that analog directly to the amplifier? You must be having a good reason to have the analog stored on tape first? It can’t be just a nostalgia. I am curious.
Hmm... the T-838 doesn't sound very pleasant. It's very... sterile and kinda annoying even. The T-555WR sounds pretty decent, although the W&F kinda ruins it a bit, especially deck 2. And the CT-91a sounds very good. Definitely the winner from the comparison.
Fresh capacitors do their job.
