Restoring An Old Mitsubishi Montero | Episode 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle is head-over-heels for his Gen 2.5 "Blister Fender" Montero, but it does have over 225,000 miles on the clock. For the most part, the truck lives up to Mitsubishi's Dakar-proven reliability. The suspension does get a bit rattly, though, and the rear end tends to bottom out on washboard roads and going over speedbumps.
In this DIY, the Montero gets a beefy new set of Old Man Emu springs, plus new sway bar bushings and end links "while you're in there." The ride quality jumps through the roof with the rear end firmed up and all in, the parts cost well under $250. Next up is front axle work including new ball joints, sway bar components, and wheel bearings.

been driving sedans since 2009, but when I got a montero 2 years ago, I immediately fell in love with it. Also, there is a calmness watching restoration vids.

Great video, this is exactly what I need to do to my 96 LS. I also have been bottoming out on speedbumps, so figured springs needed replacement. Thanks to your video imma do the sway bar bushing and links at the same time

Could you share where you sourced your bushings? How reliable is the match of parts on websites? I need to upgrade some bushings and the pitman arm. The front end work would be very interesting. Thanks!!

@@hotcars Sweet! I have a '93 SR that's in decent shape. I want to start working on it, but I know nothing about how to work on cars so videos like yours are great. Thanks for putting all this work into them.

@@hotcars I'm actually more interested in the Montero Sport from 97 to about 2003. Do you know the reliability of them compared to Isuzu Rodeo or Pathfinders? I like your model as well but the sport is quite a bit cheaper and easier to find in Philadelphia. My all-time favorite classic SUV is the second generation Isuzu Rodeo but they have transmission issues sometimes. I'm wondering how the Mitsubishi line holds up against Isuzu in terms of reliability especially Transmissions. And of course I'm also wondering how well they do off-roading

The only blatantly obvious thing you did wrong, was leaving that axle hanging down pulling on that rear center brake hose. Keep an eye on each end for seepage.

Where did you get that tow hitch; can’t find any comparable ones online and yours seems to provide more structure to the frame in case of a rear end collision!

Are those 16" toyota spare wheels? You mention the previous owner had to machine them to fit. What did he have to machine? I'm curious because I'm about to put the same wheels on my 95 5spd manual. Wasn't aware there is any machining to do. Or did it just need wheel spacers?

You forgot to disconnect your left rear brake line......you can see the poor rubber line stretched out to the max, ready to "pop goes the weasel" at any moment. That line is supporting almost all the weight of the axle. I almost made the same mistake.
