Interesting to watch, it touched my heart that your daughter got to be part of the process and thank you, no annoying background music! One thing I would have changed is eliminating the bow tie fastener on the front but like you say...simple and effective.

Thank you! Yea I always enjoy having my kids in the shop…fun watching them learn. The bow tie fastener isn’t my first choice for sure, but I also didn’t want to change it since it was the only piece of hardware my mom remembered on it (she has memories of spinning it with my great-grandfather).

You are a loving and thoughtful son.

Yes it was my goal to use every bit of the existing material, and luckily I was able to save it all. Oak is definitely a beautiful wood and great to work with too!

Ooh, so enviable. We have loud snapping sounds that come from our furniture and doors in the winter here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The dryness in those months causes any inner panels that were glue, painted or varnished into place to split. We’ve got lots of splits around the house. I’ve got a five drawer dresser in very much the same condition that I have to work on just like this. On it, I will definitely only glue the frame supports and let the panels float. So, when I see you and others glue the panels into the frames, I cringe, but I suppose in Oklahoma you don’t have such a contrast in dryness/humidity.

Thank you. Yes unfortunately I lost a lot of footage from before I started and didn’t realize it until well into the process.

The video and all the effort made to make a piece of furniture functional is very good. I appreciate you sharing that impetus. But I would like to say that we should not confuse the words "RESTORATION" with what's a repair where an object is obtained with some parts of the original. Restoration is a discipline that seeks to preserve old objects and where the materials with which an object was manufactured are studied and when it comes to restoring, the same materials with which it was created are used, pictorial layers, paints, glues, etc. types of wood. In many cases it is about preserving the most authentic possible original materials, paint, wood. Another premise to follow, as far as possible, is that any restoration carried out must be able to be removed in a moment and return the object to its previous state. I always say that "Restoring is not repainting"

Thank you 😊 I do appreciate the distinctions drawn…with this piece I’d make the case that, minus the missing shelves, my goal was to use all original materials and introduce very little, if anything new to the piece. For the most part I was successful in that endeavor, but I am not a scholar of restoration by any means…merely trying to give old pieces their glory back!

Be sure and tell your mom you had help restoring it. The cabinet will mean that much more to her.

Good job, I am so glad that you didn't use a ton of bondo and paint most of it, the beauty is in the old wood being brought back to life. Just one question, why didn't you strip and sand it when you had it all apart and then you would have only had to do final sanding once you put it all back together?

Thanks…I really should have done it like that…I was afraid I would mess up the dimensions of the parts by doing that and it wouldn’t go back to together right. Turned out all the dimensions were a little off and really should have done it prior. Was a learning experience for me.

Hi. I’m working on an old tiger oak dry sink table and have a question. Did you first stain with the the dark walnut and then the golden oak on top?

Excellent job. Why did you glue the panels to the stiles, rather than free float them?

Thank you. I glued one long side to provide rigidity since it is part of the door. I’ve had other free floating doors that would fall apart after a year or two with consistent use (this one will be used regularly).

Lovely job. Just wondering why you didn't replace the legs you cut off or at least put something to raise it off the floor a bit to protect the wood.

Thank you 🙏 to answer your question, I chose not to as there is still quite a bit of curvature on the bottom pieces (current legs) and I liked the shape of them. I may end up adding some furniture pads or something similar to the touch points, but it was an aesthetic choice. Valid question though!

Thank you! As for the finishing, I originally wasn’t planning to redo it and strip it down, but the Restore-A-Finish I tried at first looked horrible, so after it was assembled I decided to strip it. Would have been better to do it first, but projects don’t always go as planned!

Beautiful job. I'm curious as to why you wait till it is assembled before cleaning, sanding and filling. Some at least would be easier when disassembled, or would it? Like the many panels of the back. Not a criticism, just an honest question from a total amateur.

Thank you! So my thought process going into it was that I didn’t want any dimensions to get altered by sanding before I put it back together. In hindsight, I would have done the surface prep before assembly since I ended up having to make some adjustments anyways (the small router cut for example). It was a learning moment for me.

In my experience it shouldn’t be too bad. Any furniture piece that’s glued together is susceptible to humidity changes. I will always opt to glue anything that’s structural as well.

I just made the decision that I wanted more structural strength for the piece. I’ve had cabinets come apart at the joints with floating panels much quicker than humidity or seasonal changes do when gluing the panels.

Based on the serial number in the New Royal archives, it was manufactured sometime between 1895 and 1901 (the series production timeline).

Probably. I’ve never been a fan of floating panels though as I’ve had to repair way too many failed joints, and…the sides are major structural components of this piece, so would rather risk wood movement than structure failure. Others might see it differently.
