BEAUTIFUL restoration of an UGLY desk
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This desk was made around 1920-1930. Decades later somebody tried to refinish it, but they stopped in half way. So now it was my turn to make it nice again.

There are some furniture restoration channels on KZread. If somebody asked me to pick the best one, it would be a tough choice. Since I am writing here, you can surely guess where I am heading. Correct. This! This is the best furniture restoration channels on KZread. Ahti, you are a true master and I also like the way you do this videos. No talking, no "sponsors". Just pure 100% content. I remain truly amazed and grateful, for you share your workflow and over decades acquired skills with us. You are truly a master of your craft, Ahti. Best wishes, Erik.

Have you watched Thomas Johnson Antique furniture restoration? He is more traditional and antiques are much older. But the transformation of the pieces is the same. Love love love his channel too. I gave up on others watching only my favourites AT Restoration and Thomas. They are very different but both are very professional. Two generations of true masters.

When I watch other channels (which is very rare), I watch with WWAD in mind. And I get frustrated that they aren't doing what is best for the piece.

I totally agree!
I think what makes these videos so enjoyable is the good editing; you show just enough to follow the process, but not enough to make it boring. It stays interesting throughout!

Exactly. I finished watching this video and realized that I watched the whole thing at normal speed. I almost always watch restoration videos at 2x speed.
Beautiful! I too would have preferred a mid tone stain but this piece is alive again.
Magnificent! Only you could have resurrected that desk to the level it is now Ahti. My wife and i both exclaimed "Who wouldn't want that in their home"? Who indeed! Spectacular work my brother. And thank you again for the English subtitles on your interview video on television. While your language is beautiful, I speak none, so being able to see what was said made the video even more awesome. Thank you as always brother, for your outstanding work and videos. God bless. Rev. D.
Beautiful mobile! I'm only sorry for the dark color applied to the piece, because I like the color of natural wood. Whatever the color of the wood, I prefer it because the natural beauty is incomparable. Another extraordinary work, Ahti! Congratulations!
Your client is very fortunate to have you do the work. It came out beautifully.
I agree with you on how the stain is too dark. It still looks magnificent but it would look even better a shade or two lighter. Brilliant restoration sir. Your best yet! BRAVO!
I wait expectantly for your videos. Love them all.
You are a master of your craft. What I like the best is you don’t replace the entire surface for just a chip on the corner and you make everything blend. Also, candle wax works.
so skillful. Now it looks good and works well.
Gorgeous. What I like about this restoration is that the craftsman preserved the character of the piece.
Watching you bring these lovely old pieces back to life makes me so happy!!❤️

You just put into words how I feel about these videos! I love AT !!
Andersonville, Tennessee here! I would love to have a desk like this! Beautiful job!
Excellent workmanship, well done 👏
You are indeed a very talented, skilfull and artistic furniture restorer.
Such a beautiful desk! I love how you work to preserve the original wood. So many KZread restoration creators will just toss the whole piece and make a new one. One video I recently watched threw out all the wood on a restoration of a chest - the hardware was the only original part! That's fine if that's what you want to do, but don't call it a "restoration" video. Again I love your work and your genuine restoration videoes! Thank you from SC, USA.
The desk had a lot of wear over many years of hard daily use; All of which showed. "...making it nice again." is an understatement. You made it spectacular looking, as well as useful and practical. Everyday useful art. I love what you do! Thanks!
I too do not like darks staining of wood furniture, but you have to please the client . This another successful project. I appreciate your work.
I've learned more from watching your videos than any other videos. Fantastic work!
I agree that the color requested was darker than I would have chosen, but you can't argue with the stunning transformation. Absolutely beautiful. I get almost giddy when I see the notification that you have released a new video...I always learn something new. Thanks for another great restoration.
Something I realized, and love, is that irons, and dyes are most commonly used by wood workers and seamsters.
So beautifully restored !! I love the dark stain, it is such a rich and warm color - like a delicious chocolate bar. Bravo 👏
I learned something new today: I didn't know you can iron fresh pva glue. Very professional work, thanks for sharing.
Yes, a beautiful piece of restauration work. Gives me hope, that I can restore my wifes old - oak veneered - desk (early 1950 ´s) to become such a wonderful piece of furniture for her private office. Thanks for the lesson Sir. have a nice weekend with warm regards from Robert out of Germany
THANK YOU. RESTORED TO BETTER THAN NEW.
Excellent workmanship! Ashame the client wanted it so dark, though
What a beautifully restored and re-purposed piece of office furniture. The work of a true professional.
It's a fantastic job again! The table is very beautiful!!! Thanks!
Wow! Thanks for sharing your expertise! Beautiful job!
Wow! What a beautiful piece!
I love the way you work, your ethics, your attention to details, your REAL and not put on. You know what needs to be done and just do it. This is one very beautiful desk, all the details, hidden compartment and all. I would have thought the client would have wanted someway to keep it off the floor to protect it some what. You do such beautiful work. Thank you for sharing this with us. You have a truly blessed day
You did a wonderful job blending the new and old veneer on that desk top.
Although I have had many favourites from your body of work I think this one is my favourite-of-all-time! At least so far. Even in its life-has-been-hard condition it is a beautiful piece and your skilled restorative work just puts it over-the-top for me.
You always manage to get another surprise with the way you transform old, decades-old furniture with your usual skill.
I love your repairs, man. Excellent patches and strength. Wow, those door edge corners will NEVER chip again. What a good decision it was to replace those water-damaged top pieces -- too much dirt underneath them. I never would have guessed it was so bad under them.
Спасибо за хороший ролик. Очень приятно смотреть, когда у человека руки от куда надо растут!
It’s back to being a beautiful antique again! I love the dark stain and you are a magician with matching the new wood to the old wood!
Watching you, doing this nonsense-free restorations that obviously put bread on your table is always making me happy and motivated :-) All the best from Poland!
I never would have guessed that the desk would have come out that nice! You are a master!
What a perfect job. The old desk turned into a high end desk for years to come. You are a wizard restotator
I was so happy to see you had uploaded another piece of work. And you did not disappoint like always. Nice outcome! Thank you.
Beautiful desk that you did excellent work on. The keyhole escutcheons seem a bit off to me. I'm guessing they are original to the desk but the style of them feels slightly jarring. As usual, watching you do such wonderful work is very enjoyable, thank you for sharing this with us!

I felt the same! I think either the escutcheons or the pulls must have been changed - they seem like a mismatch. As much as I think the pulls feel more of the proper style, though, I really think the escutcheons are original and the handles are what were replaced somewhere along the way. It would be interesting to know.

@@Lucinda_Jackson even so, I think the pulls are fine but he escutcheons are just not the best choice the original builder/factory could have made.

It's such a pleasure to watch skilled labour. A really beautiful job.
Wow 😲 amazing work! It was worth to restore this desk ! 👌👌👌
Looks brand new! You are a true craftsman!
Beautiful work. That desk just screamed make me dark! Worked out very well. Love the magnet too. Once more. Great job. I don’t disagree often!
Вот это реставрация я понимаю, шикарно, красиво. Вы мастер с большой буквы. Спасибо за видео, лайк однозначно.
Wow, beautiful desk and professional finish!
Beautiful work as always! Your attention to detail is amazing to watch.
Absolutely beautiful!
Absolutely amazing!
Just perfect..!! Besides loving your videos, I truly like your respect for history and the passion put on what you do, congratulations..!! What a difference it makes when we have the right tools to complete any project..!!
Congratulations ! As every time you did a perfect restoration ! I admire your work !!
Very nice job, you should be proud my friend. The only thing I would add is to move the random orbital sander slower for more consistent results.
It find shocking that all this beautiful old furniture is veneered. Not to say you don't do a finominal work, because you do. I'm amazed how you can take the new parts and add them to the old parts and they all look like they have always been that way. You're more of an artist then a restoration expert... fantastic

Veneering is a very old technique, so there is nothing wrong with that. You can cut less hardwood trees to make nice furniture this way.
I normally abhor darkly stained wood, but this came out just great. Amazing job repairing the top of the desk!!
This is beautiful! Well Done!
I love watching you work, you put so much effort in all the details of these restorations...Take care...
Wow! Every time I see your work it amazes me! Stunning!!😊❤
You are a gifted craftsman. Thank you for showing us your work.
You’re right, it’s just a little too dark. The grain is hidden. But of course you work is amazing as always.
Тамаша! Ісіңізге сәттілік. Сіздің шеберлігіңізді өте ұнатамын.
Ahti, Wow, once again you Never cease to amaze me with Any piece of furniture you are restoring. I love all you videos
Ciao complimenti un restauro impeccabile!!! e un piacere vederti lavorare, hai una grande maestria.
Masterful. The result looks so crisp.
I like your work. You are precise. Every restoration is beautiful and you are not boring
What a awesome art deco piece from the past. I couldn’t get over how long those drawers were. I love watching you take much pride at each piece of furniture you do. Your customer is going to be thrilled to see it back to its original desk ( except maybe a little darker) This desk would fit right into days style. It’s beauty with a lot of history. I love it! I love it! ♥️😊👍🌟🌟🌟
You really are very good, everything explained nicely and quietly, no loud voices which drive me mad on KZread. Thank you for sharing your skill and obvious love of the articles you renovate.
This piece turned out very beautifully. It looks very expensive. Great colour choice👌
Your skills are just above and beyond anyone else on KZread. I have a beautiful (previously valuable) antique grandfather clock, but my puppy chewed the legs and the wood around the face warped during transit. I would only trust someone like you to fix it, but I doubt there is anyone else! And I"m not in Europe even. :(
Amazing craftsmanship! Love your videos! Look forward to the next one, thank you.
First Class! Whilst I agree with you regarding colours, you have made a beautiful & very usable desk here. Thank you for sharing !
For experienced folks this would be a good video. For those of us who are newbies, a little more explanation would be helpful. Beautiful result!
A painstaking restoration, resulting in a superb piece of furniture.
You are a wood surgeon, magnificent work!
I am in the process of learning to do a little of the great things you do. I really enjoy watching and learning. Thank you so much for sharing.
Профессионально, аккуратно - как всегда. Лично мне кажется излишне темноватым, но это просто недолюбливаю слишком тёмное дерево. Сделано, бесспорно, профессионально. Лайк.
Absolutely stunning. It's hard to believe its the same piece
Nice job bringing new life back to the old desk.
That is a beautiful finished project, and is now a beautiful desk, but I agree with you, the stain is too dark. The woodgrain and wood features get lost in the stain. Your work is impeccable, and you should be very proud of the result. You've got some serious skills.
The carcass was very well made, and you did a beautiful job on the veneer, yes antiques were often dark stained it covered up a myriad of sins, particularly mis-matched wood and difficult bookmarking on veneered doors. But it turned out beautifully, well done!!
Incredible work, as always!
This desk is totally unique now. It is perfect. It might sound silly, but I often get sentimental feelings when I'm watching a piece of yours that is really special. And I got that feeling while watching this. Somebody loved this desk and put a lot of love and work to, and into, this old man. I thank you for standing him high and proud again. I like to think it 's going to stay in the same family and perhaps be used and loved again there. Thank you for allowing us to watch as you bring this beautiful piece of history back for us to enjoy. Best wishes.
Excellent work, once again! Thanks for sharing, I was looking forward to seeing your next project and you didn't disappoint. Can't wait for the next one!
Another beautiful restoration and another happy customer. Great work!
you restore and create beauty at the same time. Bravo!
Astonishing and magnifying work! Could watch for ages!
Yet another great video with unbelievable results. Thanks for letting us tag along on your journeys!!
Unbelievable transformation. What a beautiful big desk.
That dark stain did help blend in the repairs. An excellent job overall.
For some silly reason I always giggle when you show hand sanding in fast motion! It looks so satisfyingly fast and the sound is very funny.
Lovely, as always, beautiful transformation.
your client's color choice literally KILLED the beauty of the wood.
As usual aother beautiful restorartion which called for all you skills to achieve. Like you I would have preferred a lighter stain but the client is always right especially when matching other furniture. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Terrific renovation! Lovely, just lovely. Well, well done sir!
Stunning. Top notch. Beautifully crafted. You have the magic touch.
Beautiful meticulous patient work, so well done. Just a few shades to dark for me, I would have loved to see the desk top panels lighter. Fantastic resoration 🤗👌
WOW - what a beautiful piece of furniture. You did such a good job on it. Thanks for sharing your skills - WELL DONE 🙂. Take care.
Wow, wow, wow! Thank you for sharing this. Beautiful ! ❤
Always glad you are sticking around long enough from your motorcycle rides to do these lovely restorations.
