One suggestion when putting the bolts and screws and moving parts together use Never Seez and 100 years from now they will have no problems removing them. Just on the base parts. I also use it on a few of the machine lubrication spots,mainly screws and bolts/tensioner,and a few others.Machine light grease,and machine oil the rest.

Thanks so much for all the information! I am enjoying re-watching this series as I tackle repair jobs to my great-great grandmothers machine (bought in 1894). The wood has all kinds of damage. The cast iron has some rust and some paint 'rubbed off' (but not chipped). As I live in a small space where I can't ventilate or take it outside, I am looking for a way to cut some corners with the cast iron so that I can just remove the rust and maybe seal or treat it in some way to prevent future damage, without using toxic products or spray painting, not necessarily going for a picture perfect look. Haven't found any easy solutions yet, but any info much appreciated.

Larry, you are most welcome, it was totally my pleasure. That base looks FABULOUS! Just perfect! I wish I knew why Singer made some bases with the gold and some without. Thank you for showing, up close and personal, how doing something the right way is still the best way. So much for my plan for my treadle irons. 😂 Looks like they're going to be done right. For what it's worth I suspect my husband, who is an engineer and therefore anal about doing everything right, would have nixed my idea. I can't wait to see the finished cabinet in all her glory.

Normally, eBay is the best place to find replacement parts. If you can find a trashed machine too far gone to restore, it will be a treasure trove of parts for your future restorations. Good luck!

Hi i got some of these to restore for personal use but the previous owner painted it with regular black metal paint from a can, it has brush hairs stuck all over and the paint was applied too thick and i think with no prep work as some rust is showing under the paint. What do u recommend in getting it back down to bare metal? Sandblasting? Cuz paint stripper might take too long with all the nooks and crannies. Thankyou and great job sir

This is awesome - I just found a singer sewing machine base I’m looking to restore. I’m an apartment dweller.. so any advice for stripping the old paint and rust would be helpful!

I use a wire brush on a grinder. You can use a wire brush on a drill. You could also use a commercial paint stripper, but that's a huge mess. If you can find someone with a sand blast cabinet, they can get it blasted off for you and that's money well spent. This is the one part of these restorations that I really don't care for. I wish I had the room for a good sandblast cabinet myself. Good luck!

You said that the Rub-n-Buff could be removed easily with mineral spirits. Is it permanent once it drys and sets or will it still come off easily?

It gets hard and will last without being top coated.

I have this sewing machine and I’m curious if restoring the base as you have done here will increase the value and/or interest in the item when reselling?

It depends on your market. Here, these are not very popular and ALL of the restorations I do are for people who have an emotional/family attachment to the item. There is a small market for these among people who like to sew with them and if you can find a buyer you may have a re-sale opportunity - good luck with your project.

Just wanted to know if you are still doing this sort of work. Just received my dear grandmother’s machine. I am very interested in getting it restored. This is the machine she taught me to sew on MANY years ago. We think it’s from 1941.

That base looks amazing. How do you know it’s a “girl”? I don’t think I’ll ever have the patience to get mine looking that good.

what is the model no of this cast iron base ?

How do you rebuild the bearings? I've taken mine apart and can't figure out how to put the bearings back in. This is regarding the wheel that spins...

I have never replaced those. Without looking, I assume they would have to be pressed out, but I don't know what you could do for a replacement. You may be able to buy a parted out flywheel on line and simply swap it out. Good luck!

I totally would have sent the ironwork out to be blasted or dipped; way too much work for me. Nice job though ...good on ya.

I don’t see any detail about type of paint used and how you prepped metal. Maybe that’s in part 5? I can’t find it. Also I’ve been taught never to wear gloves using a wire wheel. It could grab your glove and get it stuff.

I've got one that has a snapped rod,the bit that connects the treadle to the big wheel. Do you know what its called.? I'm no welder so hoping to get a replacement part.

It's the Pitman Arm. On the older machines, it was made of wood. If you search eBay for Pitman Arm Assembly, you may find what you need - good luck!

What's the best way to remove rust?

It depends on what the rust is on and how bad it is. You can often use a wire wheel and it will take off surface rust. You can also soak it in vinegar for a day or so and scrub it clean or use a product like Evapo-Rust. Good luck!

Rebuilding a treadle and adding missing parts. My treadle doesnt have anywhere to bolt on a belt guide! Would it have been screwed to the wood above? I see in some manuals like for the vs2 it shows a round belt guide not an oval one and it coming down from above not out towards the back. Have you ever run into different belt guide locations?
