Restoring a WEN Model 920 Zipp Saw

I had never seen one of these before a subscriber asked me about them. Part Sawzall, Part Jig Saw, still it's own interesting type of saw. Can we bring this Zipp Saw back to glory and is there still a purpose for this design in the modern world? Let's get busy!

A good restoration of that old Jig Saw. Must say never seen one like it before. Looks like it was used to cut out circles in wood. Must be from late 40’s to early 50’s great Job ! 💯👍

Thanks! Likely the prettiest restoration which I'll never actually put to work. It just feels awkward to cut with it. I do love the wood handle though!

That's pretty cool. Great job looks great. I have never seen one before. I like how the black paint made the mounting plate look cool.👍👍👍💯💯☺️☺️

Thanks! There is a similar saw that WEN made with the blade pointing downward. I hope to come across one of those someday so I have the set. :)

Thanks! The wood handle and brass washer really dress it up. There's another version of this that I'll hopefully come across someday just to compare them.

Thanks! I guess it's just a forgotten design. I'd never seen one before either.

Yes, very odd. I would not want to rely on it to replace a sawzall.

I inherited this same saw from my father. It's been sitting on a shelf since then. He taped a blade to it for safekeeping (54-8021-4) but I cannot say anything about it except that it seems to be the right type. There is an original sticker on the upper surface -"Deluxe Zipp SAW". The handle for this one is missing so it was good to see what was there. I pulled it off the shelf because I've been cutting out old steel fuel tanks from a boat with a sawzall but space is limited for the cuts and this saw may be useful in tight spaces. The video is a good heads up about maintenance before attempting to use it. Thanks for taking the time to record and post your restoration. P.S. I'll be looking at alternative solutions, cutting blades for grinder or RotoZip with grinder accessory.

Thanks! I think you're right. This would be better in tight spaces than a regular sawzall. It seems to take and hold blades the same as my old Milwaukee sawzall so I think those are the correct types of blades but I think this could also work with a much shorter length.

This saw has the original blade hold screws, both are hex set screws.

@@johnalton8726Good info, thanks! That makes sense actually. A Sawzall has a hex screw to hold the blade as well.

It's kind of more like an awkward Sawzall in some ways but it has traits of that and a jigsaw. I've got the companion to this waiting in the wings to be restored and it's just as odd but more like an actual jig saw than this.

now if you could find one with the blade going down like a jug saw you would be set

I'll find one eventually. The Flea Markets here have a lot of old power tools waiting to be saved.

I have one and it still works, but I cannot find a replacement blade. Wen was bought over 20 years ago and the new company has zero info about the old models. Any ideas appreciated.

I found the blade for this out of an old tool box I had bought and I had the exact same problem when I rebuilt a Skil Recipro Saw recently. It seems the older blades had a slightly smaller grip end. I likely have some spares around so PM me and I'll look and try to send you one.
