Well done sir! 👏 i have my dads small rose oysterdate in a gold case, and these are a joy on the wrist. Replacing a jewel is extremely difficult despite the ease you showed in doing so, boss level tweezer skills! Love your work.❤

This is a compliment not only to Monsieur Le French Watch Collector, but also to KZread itself. . It’s great, and amazing to me, to be able to watch the video on my TV📺, and connect my iPhone📲 to the video to add comments like this one. . Well done to you both! . I also make sure to double check my Subscriptions and Likes: I’ve noticed on some other KZread channels, my Subscription being UNSUBSCRIBED for no reason, and for channels I KNOW I’ve subscribed to! What’s up with that, KZread? . Anyway, Salut🫡 👋🏽.

Well what I know, is Rolex didn't build there movements in house until the 60s and 70s so it doesn't surprise me to see a ETA mouvement inside a Tudor. You mustn't forget ETA is an up range company.

Rolex build they own calibers for a long time with the first automatic in 1931 so a long time ago. ETA is a great company that produced fantastic calibers

A very enjoyable video. I recently went a bit mad on eBay and acquired two vintage Tudor watches, an Oyster manual wind from around 1952 and an automatic Oyster Prince from 1959. I really like all arabic numerals, as in this example, as opposed to bars or dots.

Great result. Again.👍🙂 And great improvements on your first videos, techniques too. Vintage Tudors were always a good option and tbh I preferred many of their designs to Rolex. Regarding the lume. I'd be very careful with any vintage watch pre 1965-70, the vast majority of 50's watches used radium. Tritium is more a 1960's on trend. Tritium doesn't go nearly so dark as old radium, or at least in watches I've seen. I've a geiger counter which helps. Radium gives off strong results, vintage tritium almost nothing. I'm no watchmaker, but I have relumed a few watch dials/hands(mostly old trench watches) and if I have to remove old lume I do it under mineral oil to eliminate dust flying around. Another trick I found to colour the new lume is rather than add colour in the mix which is the way most do it, but I found reduced the glow(and I wanted the glow😁), I tried something different. I apply the new lume and when it's dry apply dilute washes of good quality watercolour with a small brush. gives a lot more control with the colour and takes very little away from the glow. I've a couple of trench watches that now glow like torches throughout the night, like they did when new, minus the mutation problem. I'm mutated enough. 😄

You are right about radium being darker, on some watches I've seen lume so cooked it resembled coal. Watch Repair Tutorials channel has a very nice educational video on reluming radium hands. I have an 1950 omega which gives of 6 microsieverts just from hands alone. Did not muster the courage to even open it yet, let alone do a service and relume.

@@luco323 Old lume can vary a _lot_ in colour alright Luco. Seems to depend on the initial ingredients mix and/or atmospheric effects(Radium lume seems to suck up moisture like a thirsty camel) and the era it's from. So very early Trench watch radium tends to be a dirty tan or brown(and VERY hot), 30's/40's/50's lume tends towards darker and like you say near black at times. The other problem when radium breaks down it breaks down into nasties like radium and fine dust that can get into the movement. I've had dials and hands that were cleaned and 'dead', but the movement on its own was still ticking and not in a good way... Though you need a geiger counter to be sure. Years ago i saw a job lot of vintage(20s-40's looking) hands on ebay and I bought them(for one particular watch I had). they looked brand new, very well sealed. Colours ranged from a light tan to a really vivid light green. I tried the Geiger counter. All were very clearly radioactive, so were radium, but just going by colour and expecting decay you would have thought later non radioactive lume. Sounds like a lovely Omega you have. I don't even need to know the model as anything from 1950 by brands like Omega, Longines, Zenith are lovely. 🙂 Though yes 6 microsieverts isn't great... Though I've had a 1915 trench watch register over 10 and I'm still here(twitches and scratches my third eye😁).

@@MrGrentch Great insights. I bought a geiger for my vintage watches last year, worth it all the way. And about my radium omega ,that's what I'm worried about the most...radium dust in the movement. I can imagine some sort of soaking and/or pressure blowing process for movement done outside. Just that the risk of contaminating myself and all the tools used seems not worth it. In the future I might just look aroud for some old watchmaker without the instinct of self-preservation to do the service instead.

  • @MrGrentch

@@luco323 The oul geiger counter is a major advantage alright. Still, it'll likely be OK Luco. After all watchmakers in the 20th century don't leap out as having shorter lives in the records and they would have been far more blase about the risks. For much of the 20th century they/we didn't even see it as a big risk. Any time I've worked with such watches in my amateur way, like you said, I did it outside, on a summer's day. Wearing a mask, cos paranoid. 😁 Because by FAR the biggest risk if from inhalation. inhaling a particle of that stuff, would make smoking 60 a day look like veganism. And after the whole covid thing, no doubt we all have masks gathering dust somewhere. 🙂 as it turns out, older folks are much less sensitive to radiation, so you might be onto something... 😄

It's nice to know that even if we try and royally mess it up, The French Watch Collector is still able to bring it back! Beautiful work. I was reading in a Rolex service manual (3135), and noticed it prescribes a pre-wash once the dial and automatic works are removed - to run the still-assembled caliber through the cleaning machine before disassembling the rest of the caliber. Do you ever follow this type of procedure? I don't think I've seen anyone on youtube doing that.

I actually like the classic Tudor more than most of their modern creations which are more-less Rolex-alike (yes, I know they try stuff Rolex never did, e.g. FXD, but still)... and for a dressier/ every day watch like that one, the classic logo with the rose just looks BLOODY AWESOME!
