Restoring A Split Painting : Ex Multis Ad Unum - Binaural ASMR(ish)

Ойын-сауық

When a painting is catastrophically damaged often the assumed choice is whether or not to save the piece. For the conservator it is not a question of if or can the painting should be saved, rather it's how to save it.
In this video Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago shares how a painting of Mary that had been split into four pieces is fully conserved and restored. Using both traditional and modern approaches, archival and fully reversible materials, slowly but surely the piece is saved. All of the work is stable and can be removed in the future if ever so desired.
One of the challenges that the conservator often faces is before being able to embark upon the work of restoring the painting the old conservation attempts and materials must first be addressed. That is, before the "do" comes a lot of "undo." Unknown materials and motives can be frustrating and difficult to address yet with experience and resources these can be overcome.
This video was shot in 4k 60fps and with binaural microphones providing an immersive visual and audio experience. As such it's best experienced with headphones.

Hey guys and gals, first off sorry it took so long to get this one out; my move consumed my time and energy more than I expected (of course!). Second, there are a few spots in the video where the binaural microphones failed and the sound reverts to flat stereo... sorry about that. Finally, if you have questions, post them in the comments and I'll keep an eye out and in a week or two I'll try to answer them in a narrated version.

I learned one important thing when I was doing automotive restoration: When you're dealing with preserving really old pieces, there is no "quick way" to do it. It requires careful planning and research, a delicate hand, and a lot of patience. As frustrating as it can be at times, the results are usually well-worth the effort. My biggest struggle is the patience aspect. I feed off of results and it can often feel like a futile effort when you are moving at such a slow pace, but when you finally have a chance to take a step back and check your progress, you once again realize why you are doing it in the first place. Thanks for the excellent videos.

Don´t know if anyone has ever asked but what are the personal health issues related to what you do? How do you deal with them? I guess hundred year old grime and solvents and posture, sitting for long hours and fumes, all that can be of concern in the long therm. And thanks for doing these videos, me and my wife have been fans for some time now. Cheers, from Brazil.

He always wears a mask when using something that has toxic fumes. The grime is probably innocuous and that kind of stuff covers everything in the world in various amounts, its probably mostly dust and air pollution. Physically his job is less damanding then most general labor jobs.

I find that too many ASMRtists have ‘goalless’ videos, where the sounds are just manufactured because they sound good, but with your videos, the sounds are a result of specific important progress being made. You aren’t just scraping or brushing on canvas because it sounds nice, but because that’s what you need to do to restore a culturally significant piece of art.

I'm such a nerd, I got excited by the fabric sheers. they are very nice and I am slightly jealous

I wanna hear your voice... And your dry comments about things being of "valid points...but none of them matter!" 😂

Seriously. I don’t really wanna hear paper crinkle for 40 minutes. Also ASMR videos have been associated with a lot of exploitative channels, so I’m not thrilled to see this becoming a trend.

That's why he does both an ASMR and narrated version of the same restoration :) To keep the ASMR fans and the others like us happy!

@@Kilomylesco KZread is inherently exploitative. Just take each video and creator as they are. Ignore the stuff you don't like.

His voice is more ASMRish for me. I would love to know what each of the earlier steps were and how many hours this took from start to finish.

Julian’s videos are truly one of my greatest pleasures of using social media / KZread! Can’t wait for the narrated version 🥰

Don’t get me wrong, as an ASMR and restoration lover I thoroughly enjoyed this. But am I the only one imagining what Julian would say/hearing Julian’s narration in my head? 😂 I guess I’ve watched too many of his narrated videos! 😂 Anyways. Great work, per usual Julian. Your videos always relax me (narrated or not) and never fail to make me smile! 😁 Keep it up! ❤️
