For this video our subject is a painting by the American Master George Inness. This painting was executed during Inness' second sojourn to Italy in 1874 and is one of two paintings of similar subject matter.
This painting was owned by a university and museum before it became available to the public and ultimately the clients. At some point, perhaps in the mid 1940's the painting underwent a conservation whereby it was lined with an aluminum interleaf. After discussing options with the clients it was decided that this conservation would seek to undo all of that work and return the painting to Inness' vision as close as possible.
This video was shot over the period of about 4 weeks during which the work was executed as necessary. This video is not exhaustive, does not provide a comprehensive view of the work that was required to conserve the artwork or show some of the steps before, during or after the work. And as always, this video is not meant to be instructional.
--------
One of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced, in turn, by the Old Masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness's maturity (1879-1894).
Although Inness’s style evolved through distinct stages over a prolific career that spanned more than forty years and 1,000 paintings, his works consistently earned acclaim for their powerful, coordinated efforts to elicit depth of mood, atmosphere, and emotion. Neither pure realist nor impressionist, Inness was a transitional figure who intended for his works to combine both the earthly and the ethereal in order to capture the complete essence of a locale. A master of light, color, and shadow, he became noted for creating highly ordered and complex scenes that often juxtaposed hazy or blurred elements with sharp and refined details to evoke an interweaving of both the physical and the spiritual nature of experience. In Inness’s words, he attempted through his art to demonstrate the "reality of the unseen” and to connect the "visible upon the invisible."
Within his own lifetime, art critics hailed Inness as one of America's greatest artists. Often called "the father of American landscape painting," Inness is best known for his mature works that not only exemplified the Tonalist movement but also displayed an original and uniquely American style.

Probably not. As amazing as conservators can be, they only really get "noticed" if they did an awful job and ruined something in a piece of artwork, and then it's by the new conservator cursing them. Baumgartner is doing a good job so it's unlikely the painting will ever need a new conservator--so there's no one to notice the work he put into it.

...and I just happened to be watching another person restoring a painting, the guy starts ripping the back of the canvas off and I start yelling; You animal! What are you doing, you're going to destroy the painting! Baumgartner is having some influence on me. Now I question myself at work, ok, so nobody will probably notice, but will I be proud? What if someone else sees it. What will it say about me. 🤔 I'm going to have to stop watching his videos. I think it's turning me into a more ethical and thoughtful person.

Maybe quite sensible at the time if it was done during the war - probably likely the painting had to be transported somewhere safer than wherever it had been, and the frame needed to be made more inconspicuous - just, maybe wasn't intended to be left for quite as long as it was.

Since I'm a retired Chemist I'm interested in what "solvents" he uses and at what times. Of course it is never mentioned in the video but at about the 9:25 minute mark here I see that he adds what is possibly water, then a heavier immiscible solvent that separates at the bottom (Methylene Chloride maybe?) then another liquid that enables the two previously immiscible solvents to mix. (I'm guessing that is Isopropyl alcohol). This kind of customized mixing of different solvents I assume is what makes it possible to vary the concentrations of any of the solvents depending on the requirements of each individual task. Yes I'm a bit of a geek but it is fascinating to me.

I am so glad the issue of light was presented. As a former negative retoucher and vice president of the company, an having trained hundreds on how to retouch over the years, I found light is just as important if not more important and any other point of information. We used light boxes and did our own testing to find the best light for each type of photograph to be printed. From outdoors in each phase of the day to student yearbook photos, light was a major factor in providing us with the image in truth. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
