Restoring a set of Model "A" wheels.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video. I show the different wheels used during Ford Model "A" production, show how I select what I consider to be useable ones and how I get them painted. I know there's more to the subject than what I mention in this video, But I was in a hurry to get this project done.

Thank you for making this video, I'm in the market for ford spoked wheels and now I know what to look for.

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. At this stage in the YT game they cost you time and money and pay nothing. I like your low key approach.

The fancy wheel colors are always tempting but black just always looks right.

I just dropped off 2 rims to get sandblasted and planned on painting them myself but never thought about mounting them on something that'll spin. Thanks for the idea.

Good info. Much cheaper to paint them than to powder coat them, of course. But I've found that they will still chip eventually and need to be touched up. I used the harder to find 16" Ford wire wheels and had them powder coated. But I'm not entering my A in any MAFCA judging competition.

Paint vs Powder coating: Having revived my fathers 1930 Model A 5 window coupe, that sat broken and in the garage for 47 years (and I drove to the Junior Senior Prom 50 years ago, literally), as well getting back into the 'A' community. Simple call for me on the "you have to have your wheels powder coated" peeps. My response: Well, you know, paint on wheels seemed to have worked pretty well for the last 100+ years or so, also, I can have any color I want and refinish them myself all for about $50.00 vs. several $100.00. I guess 'common sense' just isn't common is it?! (nope) Anyway, I enjoyed your, once again, no nonsense approach to getting it done, and well. Thanks. Keep up the good work!

I think the luster of that black paint is perfect. I didn't see a primer coat, so I'm guessing at least 3 coats of black were used. This was a great video about Model A 's..🎩🇺🇸🎩

Thank you. Yes, Thay were painted over the bare metal with no primer. I think it was 2 coats of color and 2 coats of clear.

I like your setup for painting very much. The question I have is how did you get the wheel to stay centered with only 2 bolted nuts?

I have a question. The 29 coupe I am restoring had horribly pitted wheels. A local Mode, A club member sells all kinds of parts for the A’s. I went to him and , for a price, I traded my old wheels for some much better ones. One question though. Just one of the wheels has the center hub area between the hub cap and the wheel mounting holes that is a bit smaller diameter than the other four wheels. Four of the wheels measure about 2 1/2 inches diameter hole but the one wheel was about 2 3/8 diameter. Did different manufacturers of the wheels have different through hole sizes in the hub? I figured this out when I was making a jig to hold the wheels for painting. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Tom

I've never seen that before, but that sounds normal. There were 3 different manufactures for wheels in '28-29. Thay interchange, but there are little differences between them. That may be one of them.

Excellent video! I didn’t see any mention of balancing the wheel. Do you balance these?

Most people I know that own Model A's do not balance the wheel/tire. Unless the wheel or tire has a problem (rare), you won't gain much by balancing them. And good luck finding a balancing machine that will take a Model A wheel - not very common any more.

Thank you. I don't balance wheels because it's only really noticeable at higher speeds and I rarely drive over 45 MPH. It probably would be a concern if one plans on driving on the freeway a lot.

I daily drive a 1930 'A' coupe. Here's what I've done RE: wheel balancing and with great success I might add, to 'balance' my wheels. I found and installed a product (into the tire tube) called "Balance Beads" They are very small 'ceramic' beads that find the boo boo areas via centrifugal force and balance out your wheels. I can really feel them 'go to work' at about 27 to 29 mph. They are reusable if needed and run about $48.00 for the amount needed for the Model A 19"x4.75" tire. A very easy solution to a rather difficult to repair (too me anyway) situation. Highly successful, Highly recommended!!

@@mafcawebmaster4237 These beads have been used in the 18-wheeler industry for years. They aren’t snake oil at all. I have 6 vintage motorcycles and have never balanced the tires and necker felt the need to. I added beads to one last year. If you have a defective tire(Duro or other Chinese tires) nothing will help. that was my situation. But I suspect when a difference isn’t noticed it’s because it wasn’t out of balance by much to start with. Also keep in mind beads are a dynamic rather than a static thing. They rebalance to the need every time you leave from a stop.

Chiming in 'again' (7 months later) on paint vs. power coating. A. the rims were 'originally' painted, B. paint cost an average of $4.75 per wheel (I've done the math as well as the 'painting') vs. $600.00 ish for something that isn't, in my opinion better or needed. How long do you need the color to last? if it's more than 75 years and you just need to drop a few sheckles......then, by all mean's......go powder. Me? I'm a paint guy and no one can tell the difference.

NOTICE: Do NOT use re-pro' wheel nuts, most are made in China and are not made right, are not machined out inside a little, in order to seat right over the base non-thread of original studs. I only use genuine Ford nuts, wheels can work their way off, this is not a pleasant drive ~~
