Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Building A New Kitchen Wall

I am working in my mansion, tearing down an old wall, replacing worn out flooring, rebuilding supporting beams, and building a new wall. I am using a few simple tools, strong hands, great friends, and a positive, happy, attitude. Learning about new tools, making mistakes, laughing, having fun, making a dream come to life, and more.

Tell me you're NOT putting the laundry room in that basement. Up and down and up and down, upstairs to the bedrooms down ALL the way to the basement and back again. Cole. Having raised a family you must have a bedroom for each child. That will save you a lot of drama. Don’t take to many walls out as it’s nice to have separate rooms. You can enlarge the doors between to make it seem more open and still have more rooms. Bedroom on the main level will be a blessing down the road. Really give it some deep thought. Your boys and wife are awesome. Wishing you all the very best!

Not to worry about the future as to living space in this house, . . . one dry year out in the corn fields, no income, missed payments on his millions in loans and the banker will be living in this house. All their fields are dry-land farming (no irrigation system). Cole's living on borrowed money; dry-land farming is risky business and IMO he's way over extended. I grew up on a dry-land farm, I understand the risks involved. KZread videos won't make the bank payments, and now with the money dumped on this "restoration" project, he'll be wishing he had left a few walls standing in that house. Building a 2-story addition with underground theater is going overboard. Ideas bigger than his pocket book.

Im sure Justin knows this but, just for clarification, a JACK stud is the stud on closest to the window or door and holds up the header. Furthermore, the size of the opening determines how many jack studs you need. The KING stud is on the outside of the JACK stud and goes from bottom plate to top plate. A CRIPPLE is the short stud from the top of the header to the top plate.

In my area to even get a permit for reno’s at this scale where the floor plan is changing drastically engineering documents are required. I’m assuming this construction 1) has a permit and 2) has had the proper engineering work completed. Otherwise I’m certain that one of these videos will be one where the inspector was clued into this very public renovation, and pays a surprise visit.

As a mother of four (now adult children), I would suggest you put in a laundry room on the bedroom level and if you have bedrooms in the attic, put a laundry chute from the attic to the laundry room. One of our 5 houses that we have lived in had a laundry room on the bedroom level and it was wonderful! Now we have a laundry chute to the laundry room from the upstairs. I'm sure Big Daddy Cornstar has things to occupy his time over there. This will reduce the amount of "hate on Justin by at least 50%. Honestly, I'd have left already but, hey that's me. Hey, when you’re doing this stuff, make sure to do everything with minimal effort. Use different techniques to hit the plywood into place. By stomping it’s into place only hurts your joints. Take a scrap piece of plywood and hit that with your hammer pushing the plywood into place. In the long run, that joint replacement will be further out that sooner.

Hey Roman, when you change a circular saw blade or any saw blade for that matter - remove the battery or power source first! It could save a finger or two.

You need more bedrooms. A house this big should easily have 3 if not 4. And the children are going to need to separate rooms. If not have fun with the fights and arguments. Big bedrooms are overrated. You want them big enough for the bed, dressers and maybe desk, and enough space to walk around without being crowded. But you dont need a baseball field in them. Trust me, had the same issue growing up. 3 bedroom house with 3 siblings. Me and my brother were always bickering about something in there.

Thank you for these home reno episodes; these are really where it's at for me. I mean, I've been watching since "watch a 21 year old farmer get something done" and all, and I will keep watching for the farming to feel a connection to my family from Kanawha, but.... The reno is where my hearts been for the last 3 years. So thank you. :)

Im still confused about the bedrooms. You won't regret having a room for each boy. Also, have you considered having a Mother-in-law room & bath on the main floor?? It will help as Cole & Nave age....then you wouldn't have to leave the farm. Just thoughts.

When taking out a wall, instead of cutting the nails to remove the studs, use a circular saw to just cut the studs in two.. then they just pull out very simply. No need to cut any metal.

My Optometrist said in the early 1980s to speed your healing from Conjunctivitis aka Pinkeye. Take a clean washcloth fold so it is strip like. You can sit at the sink or lay down, if someone will bring it to you. Water as hot as you can take it, soak the washcloth. Ring excess. Close eyes and drape washcloth across them, across your face. When it cools, reheat. Do this for 15 minutes, several times a day. This will cause the blood vessels to open up and get the blood flowing around your eyes. Follow your doctor’s instructions and use this method to assist your healing. I have used this method since then. I get Conjunctivitis every Spring. Pollen, planting flower pots causes it. Everything you are doing inside your renovation, along with farming has more than likely caused yours. Good you went to your doctor. I hope this helps. Thank you for sharing your videos with us all. Blessings 🌎❤️😊

Quick tip Cole when you have a 2 x 6 with bark on the edge, cut it off with an olpha knife, so it doesn’t rot the rest of your wood, also can’t wait till a new video comes out and watching you since you started in 2018

Cole you should move the laundry upstairs. Going up and down is fine when you’re young but not when you’re older. And a bedroom on the main floor is a good idea for when guests come that can’t make it up stairs. Just a thought. Don’t want to do all that work to just change it later.

IMHO you should have sandwiched a 1/2 inch piece of plywood or osb in that header. That way when you go to sheet the wall there is backing on both sides to screw to. But that is just the way I do it.
