I just caught the videos of this rebuild the other day and it brought back nightmares. I did the exact same thing after I bought an old Victorian built in 1890 in the 80s. Including removing a chimney from the third floor through a kitchen fireplace to a summer stove in the basement. It still had the gas lighting in the walls, and the octopus gravity fed hot air coal stove in the basement. The roof was goose feathers with cedar shake and 3 layers of roofing slapped on top. The house was built from 40' sticks rough-hewn onsite. The outside walls were three layers; the original clap board with wax paper, cedar shake, covered with asbestos siding. That was replaced with over 50 sheets of 3/4 ply, 42 new windows, and new siding. I had a hole from the basement to the third floor because of the butchered floor joists when they ran the old lead drains through the floor boards. The floor joists where only held on the outside walls with a 1x6 cut into the outside sticks. I spent sooo much time rebuilding the old frame, and repairing the double brick foundation because of the unfiltered sand they used in the cement, causing the mortar to turn into dust. There is one thing I hope you are spared. Because the frame was roughhewn, the sticks were only even on the outside edge. Inside, the plaster and lathe hid how thin or thick it was because of how uneven the inside edge was. I had an old Sears table saw from the 50's that I used to rip 100s of 2x6x10s to sister every single stick so I could put up sheet rock. Because it was balloon construction I also had to place hundreds of fire blocks floor and ceiling level. Where I had to replace the floorboards, I used 2 layers of 3/4 ply for the floors to level up the 7/8 original subfloor and 1/2 ply. Thousands of nails. The ceiling on the first floor was 9 plus feet, 8 1/2 on the second floor. I couldn't afford so many 40 cu ft dumpsters, so for years I took truckloads of plaster and lathe to the dumps, paying by the lb. Tens of tons and I mean tens of tons I cleaned out. And my biggest mistake I made(other than buying the damn house in the first place), was living in it in it while I was doing all this. 19 years and still not done when I finally sold it. This being NJ, my taxes being $1,700 in 1986, went to $13,000 when I sold it in 2005. Tired of getting screwed by contractors, I learned ALL the trades. God bless you for saving an old house when it would have been easier to burn it down and build new. I also had to chuckle when you found things where not always built the way they should have. You are also so lucky to have a couple of buds helping you. I was alone. Good luck!

I know you and your crew will be glad when all the demolition work is done and you can start putting the house back together. It’s a daunting task but you are going to have a beautiful home when it’s done.

The more I see of Roman, the more I am impressed. He immigrated here the right way like our ancestors did 100-150 years ago. He waited for his citizenship and is a super hard working guy, he isnt sitting in a free hotel demanding better this, more EBT cards etc. Plus he has a great sense of humor and adds a lot to your channel. Roman is the classic example of an immigrant who comes to this country and helps build it up. Much respect.

I can’t believe nobody’s stopped and bought 3- 50 gallon outdoor trash cans and each of you take one with you and every time you rip off a lathe or a small board or Nails just dump them in the trashcan. Then you don’t have to bend down and pick them up and carry a handful of lathe going every which way to the dump truck. Less handling. More efficient. Oh, right. You’re getting paid by the hour. Just because Cole is your friend, you don’t have to behave that way. You wouldn’t do that with anyone else, would you? Keep up the motivation, Roman! You’re the best!

Cole, this are not problems, these are challenges. You have shown that you are more than capable of rising to meet any of the challenges you have shared with us so far. Life mindset, choose the more positive word. How does Hneiva feel knowing what was in the ceiling above her as she was cooking for your family? I can imagine she is thankful not to have known at the time! Can't wait to see what you do with the kitchen.

Don’t take the windows out. Went to a cemetery one day and the church had emploded. I asked the guy what happened. He told me the contractor was supposed to take one window at a time out and put new window in. Well he decided it would be faster to take all the windows out first and then start replacing. Well, seems the windows were the only thing holding the building up. Moral of this story, don’t take all the windows or walls out without careful planning.

Keep the momentum going Cole! Happy to see you fulfilling your goal. Just remember, do it right the first time, you DO NOT want to take a step backwards as you progress forward. Thinking about how you work is just as important as the work itself and this can save you allot of grief and wasted time and energy. All the best to you and your family!
