    As always great historical perspective and restoration teaching my friend. Just so you know all my restorations have been successful due to your instructional videos so many thanks and please keep them coming. If possible I'd also like your opinion on something I've been doing on my last couple builds. As I've mentioned to the gentleman below while the fount is off I've been coating the inside with a product called POR-15 tank sealer and seems to be working well. Most lanterns end up failing due to corrosive materials being sucked up into the intricate and small passage ways. I'm hoping this will minimize that. Thoughts??

    If you're doing a thorough job of ensuring the fount is clean and rust-free, you shouldn't need to coat the inside. POR-15 won't hurt anything, but I'd say that it's expensive and unnecessary. If, after thorough cleaning, the fount is still so rusty inside that you're getting loose debris in it, I'd question whether the fount is safe to use. If the fount is compromised, POR-15 wouldn't be my choice for sealing it, as POR-15 isn't rated for pressurised tanks.

    I don't use POR-15 to fix cracks or pin holes. Just an added step for for me to create a clean surface when a lot of large flakes keep coming out. These founts are not leaking btw.@@king.coleman

    Nice video and lantern, I have a 103 that looks much like the 132 and has the gasoline/ kerosene decal on the fount. Sadly it’s missing the control valve, know anything that fits?

    Yes, like a Coleman Quicklite, the 103 will run on either gas or kerosene. As far as a compatible valve goes, I have no idea. I didn't make any measurements when I had my 103 in pieces. I think I've seen them with Coleman Quicklite (327 or 427) valves fitted to them and with a Q99 or R55 generator, but may be wrong.

    I have a spare 427 valve stem, I’ll try it thanks. I got a weird Coleman 4H that I have never seen another one like it I’ll send you a picture.

    Hello! I have an old oil/kerosine lamp made by Rayo that I'm pretty certain is nickel plated. I'd love to get it in working order. Can I heat the entire thing in mild citric acid? Including the wick and all? It has lots of residue and I can't even get it to unscrew. Would love some advice! Obviously I don't know what I'm doing. I can send or add a picture if possible and helpful. Thank you!!!

    You need to take it apart before you immerse it in an acid solution. Only immerse the metal parts. My experience is with gas pressure appliances, not wick lamps, but from what I've seen of Rayo lamps, the nickel plating is poor and may not survive an acid bath.

    @@jpaigephoto To help free things up? I'd use a good penetrating oil like Deep Creep or PB Blaster, not WD-40.

    Here's a video I made a few months back on how to use Caswell epoxy sealant to repair a stress-cracked fount. Hope it helps. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGyhwdaapbCfddY.html

    Epoxy then maybe something like POR-15 tank sealer. When the fount is disassembled I have been coating the inside with this product to try and minimize small particles being sucked up and clogging the system. Amazing stuff!

    @@timothybehnke1067 You don't need both. POR-15 isn't rated for pressurised fuel tanks. A fuel and pressure rated epoxy tank sealant like Caswell's is all that's needed.

    So I have my hands on an Ashflash … unsure of the year … and I am having an issue with flame coming out of the mantel… I have taken the entire lantern apart and cleaned it as I have watched you do and cleaned up the generator and still having issues…. Any help would be appreciated

  • @king.coleman

    @@TheLostbuthere How long have you given the lantern to warm up? If the generator isn't hot enough the lantern will flare up. A certain amount of this is normal when it's first lit, but it should settle down once the generator heats up. The earlier Ash Flash models used a short and stubby AGM-style generator that can take longer than usual to get up to operating temperature, especially if you use a mantle that's too small.

  • @TheLostbuthere

    @TheLostbuthere

    It is a two mantle system and I have used a Coleman #21 mantles … running time to warm up about 10-12 mins … and still get a flame outside of the mantle when I turn up the cleaning valve

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    7 ай бұрын

    @@TheLostbuthere Those are the correct mantles. If I understand correctly then, it's not so much that it's flaring up, but that it's overburning, meaning that you've got some residual flame surrounding the mantles? That may just be the result of a worn-out generator. As far as the tip cleaner, it should not be in the raised position when running.
