You and your kids are a great team! I’m working on an old steam trunk and wasn’t sure exactly what to do with the rusty corners and latch. I think I will follow your lead!

I loved your video and wish I had found it before I restored a nearly identical -- and my first -- trunk! Thank you for your notes that it's waterproof waxed canvas. I couldn't figure out what its cover is. So, this means good news, no lead paint? I watched a couple of other restoration videos, one of which used Tung Oil, so that's what I used on my trunk, including the whole outside. Funny story, I accidentally locked mine, and another DIY restorer with a near-identical trunk did the same thing! My handy husband was able to fashion a makeshift key, and I'm hoping a locksmith might be able to make a real one! Thanks again!

Looks amazing. 😄 One small note. The luggage sticker on the top is from the ocean liner SS Bremen not the Bremen Airport.

I have one just like it (US). It has beautiful floral interior paper, lovely small wooden hangers, and a small doll with a dress that matches the interior papers ❤️ Great kid help, I was useless at those ages! Questions - did you consider just painting the interior? Why removed the small handles?

Thanks :) Most of theese trunks have interior papers, could have just painted it, but tried to be as close to the original as possible. Some people prefer optics over the authenticity, i choose the later, but it's up to the person. Removed the handles because I needed to restore the leather. not sure if you are talking about those...

Loved the video so informative and the kids were great helpers. Thank you for sharing. I’m working on one now thanks to your video!!! Is there anything that can be used to make the brass pieces look more golden?

Thanks for the likes. Actually I'm working on a project were I'm gilding furniture with 24K gold leaves. It's not expensive but quite hard to master. You could try with metalic acrylic gold paint as well. Honestly, If it's not in very bad shape, would keep it as it is, maybe some Owatrol Oil, looks more authentic.

Thank you for the video - really liked it. I got a similar trunk and haven‘t cleaned it yet. What products, what kind of mild detergent did you use? And what was used to polish the canvas?

Glad you liked it. Just put half dishwasher half water. For the canvas I used Owatrol Oil, not very cheap, but gives great results. Depending on the level of shine you prefer, you can put several layers, but wait until it dries before the next application.

@@biro_restoration Now I see. Owatrol not only for the metal applications but for the canvas too. Thank you for detailing that!

Your family did an awesome job on this steamer trunk. Question: in the video you said you used wall paper, however, it looked like contact paper since the backing was peeled? Inherited a massive trunk collection and I know very little about them but would like to restore them. I have one identical to the one in your video. I also opened one that is similar size but has drawers in it. Is it also called a steamer trunk?

Thanks for the like. On german amazon you can have wallpapers with adhesive back. Regarding your trunk, most probably it is, the term is quite generic, and was used for reinforced trunks, usually covered with waterproof waxed canvas. The boats transporting them around those times were steamer boats, hence the name.

Is the black trunk tinted wood or is that fabric? I have similar but mine has fabric that I need to clean. Amazing video, I hope mine comes out just as great!
