343 Restoration of Blue Steamer Trunk Part 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we tackle the big blue steamer trunk we've been showing for a few weeks. There were some delays because I ordered some wrong parts, and I changed my mind several times about the fabric liner design. I've done a lot of work off-line, but still the whole restoration will take two parts.

I was wondering how you were going to cover the inside of that tray then I saw that you made cardboard panels and I thought, "A ha!" Good idea as it really gives a nice finished appearance.

I was just telling Hippie that I got that trick from a real trunk restoration guy on KZread. I try not to watch videos directly related to a current project, especially in the design phase, but this trunk restoration business was completely new to me. Actually, there have been a few times I watched a few videos prior to starting a project: Carving Gun Stocks, Checkering Gun Stocks, and whickering a rocking chair all come to mind. And funny thing is, after watching the pros carving and checkering gun stocks, I resolved to never do it again. A humbling experience, I can tell you that. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm back from my vacation, so hopefully I'll be back in the comments.

This is a very nice trunk. It is rare to see them in this good condition. I thought that you might glue the fabric back on directly to the tray but the way you did it actually makes it look much nicer. It is also easier to redo any mistakes one would make when covering each panel. I can't imagine what a nightmare it would be to try to glue directly to the tray. How was your camping trip? Did you win any of the major trophy categories? Things aren't completely rosy on this side of the mountains but I am doing my best to make lemon meringue pie out of these lemons the world throws at us. Hope you are doing well and enjoying the cooler weather.

Yep, I got back from the camping trip a few days ago, and now I'm way behind on comments. So, I got behind on Mr. Applegates channel, but also behind on the real life stuff. Don't know how I ever had time for a job - back in the day. Didn't have awards this year, and I don't think anyone cared or even noticed. We are all getting so old that nobody wants to do much, except play cards, and perhaps get liquored-up and shoot guns. I learned the fabric trick from a trunk restorer on KZread. Those original trunks were lined with a wallpaper like material, and the skills, materials, and tools needed are fading into history. I'm guessing they used wallpaper and wallpaper glue so that theoretically the trunks could be relined. Can't remember if it made it in the video, but that original lining comes out very easily once it is wet. I have a standoff on both sides of the mountain, fact is I only have two friends who agree with my take on the political climate, and you are one of them. All my family, on both sides of the mountain, insist on "not talking about it." But frankly I'm okay with that, as I'm far to lazy to either research a cogent argument for my side, or research a fact-based response to the other side. Think I told you - I got my booster, so I'm practically immortal. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@MemphisApplegate It is easy to get behind. Life tends to make us let things slip by. I can't use the busy thing as an excuse. These days I get distracted easily and want to do mindless things. The rewards were probably a hoot for you all but I can understand why they aren't part of your camping any longer. I am sure that along with getting liquored up and shooting guns there were a lot of tales told and great laughs. What did we ever do before KZread? You know I actually remember going to the library and checking out a book to teach me how to do things! Can you imagine that? Hahaha. On the other hand, KZread has allowed me to tackle a lot of things I never would have attempted before. I was able to do some light plumbing repairs on my own by watching videos. A book could have never been able to explain the process well enough to allow me to do them. Yes you did show the liner coming off after it was wetted. It really surprised me that it did come off so easily. You and I are in the same boat about our political climate. I do have one sister who shares some of my "leanings". Other than that, politics are not discussed in my family. The ironic thing is that we grew up in a strong union family in a heavily democratic area. Not only has most of the family flipped affiliation but the whole state of WV has flipped. I got my booster also so we are both doing great. I am going to continue to maintain my mostly isolated life because some of the lemons I was referring to is that woodworking brother has cancer. Since he knows I am "safe" he is very comfortable spending a lot of time with me (the lemon meringue pie) See, I knew there was a good reason I have been living like a hermit for the last year and a half! He and I have been taking daily walks because his doctor told him that it would help him to maintain his strength during the chemo. Let me tell you, he is kicking my butt and I am in better shape than I have been in years. (more lemon meringue pie 😊) Well Mr Immortal, have a great week.

@@PidasianHippie "Flipping the affiliation," is both germane and ironic - but so true. And the irony is that the exact folks one might expect to favor a more progressive agenda - that is everyone but the very wealthy - have flipped affiliation to a side of the question which is not favorable to them. They favor a party that would eliminate Social Security, Medicare, Obama Care, etc, etc, if they could get away with it. These very flippers, while normally the least educated and underpaid among us, favor a party apposed to raising the minimum wage, and assisting with student debt. Moreover, the other side has somehow convinced what we used to call the working class to join them. It's a mystery to me. Thanks again for commenting, and sorry to hear about your brother. Their having pretty good results these days with chemo, so hang in there.

@@MemphisApplegate You have hit the nail on the head. I have a niece who is the perfect example. She flies the Old Wack Donald flag proudly. Worked at a nursing home but refused to get the vaccine and got Covid. She ended up in the hospital with no health insurance or paid medical leave. Before she left the hospital she had setup her GoFundMe. Now she is trying to get, Social Security Disability (Socialist program), Medicaid (socialist program) and SNAP Benefits (also Socialist program). However, her problems are caused by the progressives! This has been the most successful brainwashing I have ever seen. It is a nationwide cult. My brother has a great attitude and is tackling this thing head on. He got chemo today then walked 2 miles this afternoon! He still is in his shop getting covered in woodchips. I wish KZread had a way for us to share pictures. I guess I could take some pictures and make a video and make you the only one who can see it. He has made a couple of chairs over the last year that are beautiful.

@@PidasianHippie Yep, your niece is the perfect example, and strangely she will blame everything on the communist liberals .I saw a story on one lady who got covid and died in the hospital, and the kicker, to the end she insisted that the liberals had given her something to make her sick. My example is a family member who lives off Social Security disability and Medicaid, and of course thinks the cult is the best thing that ever happened. Another example of someone believing the big lie, I guess. You can make a video and upload it as "private." Then send me the link at henri_chase@sccoast.net. Tell me in the comments when I have mail, since I don't keep my email a secret, and thus it is impractical to read all the great offers I get. Nice to start the evening with some vodka and soda, and a message from you.

So when you removed lining you said soap & water. Is that dish soap or are you actually using the simple green type multi cleaner. Lovely trunk thank you for tips I’m a beginner.

I am researching if I could weatherproof an old trunk to mount to the tongue of my vintage camper for storage. Do you have any advice that may help. Thanks.

Anything is possible, only depends on how much you want to invest in time and money. However, these old trunks were not designed to be exposed for long periods in the weather. I recommend going with a period correct storage container for the vintage camper. Your ventage camper no doubt has a community, and I'd suggest starting there to find the right storage unit. Thanks for watching/
