Restoration of rusty old scale - finding hidden delights

Ғылым және технология

This small balance scale is from around 1930. It has rusty trays, oxidized metal, and 3 coats of flaking paint. Join me in its restoration to shiny, beautiful, and like-new condition.
Along the way, I discover 4 pleasant surprises that make this scale even more interesting and, once restored, more complete. You can watch sand-blasting, metal plating, clear coating, pinstriping, creation of parts, buffing and polishing, and the power of The Child, Grogu.
Key Moments:
00:00 A DetectO-Gram scale circa 1930
00:37 Vintage balance scale weight set
00:52 Disassembly of scale
04:30 Sandblasting flat tray
05:37 Flash copper plating round tray
06:08 Surface soldering, with help from Grogu
07:49 Nickel plating
08:13 More bead blasting
09:32 Photoshop re-creation of label
11:51 Diamond paste polishing
12:57 Cranberry red spray painting and clearcoat
13:25 Pinstriping
14:30 Dremel polishing brass
15:47 Creating 3D replacement part

I actually just got a job in a 92yo factory. The scale is from the 1930's. It needs you! 🤭 I saw your cash register restoration and had to use the scale the next day so here I am. I knew you would have done a scale. The building is so old and equipment. 2blks from house, good pay, weekends off. So hey old is good to me. This scale reminds me what I saw at work. Going to check labeling on it for brand. I enjoy your talent! Thanks for the shine! You shine it all! 🌟😆

Excellent job. So little tips for future restorations, as you advance you always learn. Use sandable primer to fill the small imperfections in the surface, for larger gouges and deformations you will need to use body filler. Invest in a HVLP spray equipment. Rattle cans work well just starting out, but you will get a much better finish using automotive paints and clear coats. When making decals, try not to use vinyl peal and stick, instead you can make water slide decals just as easily as you make the vinyl ones. Apply over the paint, then clear coat them in, they will last forever that way. Pinstripping takes years of practice, but keep at it. You look like you have an excellent set of brushes, practice practice practice and soon you will be a pro. Always strive to take it to the next level. And you will be amazed at what you can do. And people will pay big bucks for top notch restorations! Good luck to you in future endeavors!

My only disappointment is that: a) you didn’t apply primer or smooth out the finish on the overall surface, and b) you didn’t remove the brass label and paint under it. Nice work on the pin-striping and the new decals though - they look awesome. Especially the one on the box for the weights! Not sure I would have picked “candy-apple red” - a creamy white would have looked more authentic/original. Oh… and you didn’t repaint the pointer!

Yeah 3 in 1 oil last forever!! It looks wonderful and you did a great job restoring it as well!!!! It's a beautiful set of scales!!! Don't really care for the red it just doesn't look right on those old scales. I wouldn't think they will stay true with that plastic screw or last very long if they are used Enjoyed the video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

This is a fine restoration and a show (again) of excellent fabrication skills....but, one question: does "cleaning" the brass weights affect (adversely) the accuracy of the original weight or is any difference negligible? Nice work...best wishes.

Yes, doing that tends to gum up the works, but, should have given the knife edges and bearings a honing to improve the performance of the scale. Even in the video, one can tell that it is a bit 'doughy' for the sensitivity. I have 'inherited' 2 by 210 kg beam platform scale from a retired business. One of the mates has advised that the scale is late 1960 / early 1970 from the serial number. It has been mentioned to the national manager of the scale company that this scale is in my posession, and direction has been given to restore to original condition, they will test and verify, and place in their showroom as a talking piece. Company in question was renowned for their dial scales, but their beam scales were a good second option behind Hawke & Co.

„Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.” (Ecclesiastes Chapter 11:9-10, King James Version) „Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes Chapter 12:1-14, King James Version) John Chapter 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
