BOM: Best Of Machines

High quality video of old machines in need of either repair or cosmetic restoration, or both. And the videos go beyond just the pretty: time is taken to explain how the mechanical device works, and to share interesting history about it.

I hope the videos stir the same fascination in you as what I have for old mechanical devices, how impressively complex they can be, and the durability of manufacture that enables them to still work, and be useful, many years later.

BOM Reviews welcomes you and thanks you for your interest and support.
-----------------
The idea for this channel started out as a parody of unboxing videos -- revealing vintage and antique machines instead of new technology. Without original boxes or crates, bags were used instead, thus BOM originally stood for 'Bags O' Mystery' (which is also an 1800's phrase for sausages). The channel has evolved into something simpler, and I hope, more enjoyable.

Can I ask a few questions about your register? I just bought a similar one. 1923 model 852-E. Where can I get the receipt paper and do you know the specs on the milkglass part? That's missing. It seems like it only has a single hole in the center of the milkglass, not like many registers that has two holes for mounting. Thanks so much and thanks for the great videos. You taught me a lot about my register.

*ITS IMPORTANT TO KNOW* if you listen to a new old stock record on a restored gramophone - they dont sound like this. THIS is a 10-year-old worn-out scratched record....!!! They sound AMAZINGLY good

I wonder how much it cost to build this original cash register? Imagine how much time to make and assemble all of these parts. I hope this guy remembers where everything goes when re-assembly this fine old machine. Very interesting

Really GREAT ! You did an awesome job ! Try and get an OLDER Victor record to enjoy the results of your superb restoration, the grooves are different, you will experience much better sound. Look for a Victor record with the BIG label on it,and only one song on each side....

11:22 It was best practice to start with the largest coin first. Fifty cent piece, quarter, nickel, penny. I made change in the olden days. It was a full service gas station though, not a grocery store.

The "Chrome" plating is NOT Chrome. - Chrome plating was not invented till the 1920's or 30's. That is NICKEL Plated. In truth - "Chrome" plating is actually nickel plated FIRST, then the chrome is applied OVER the nickel to protect the nickel. Personally, I think the bare Nickel has a beautiful warmth that chrome takes away. Any good chrome shop can do it. Nice restoration - glad you didn't overdo it like so many do!

Just want to point out that when that was made a dark paste filler was rubbed into the open grain and lightly sanded off to produce a flat surface and enhance the grain before an actual oil varnish was used. No filler and poly is the standard of modern crappy finishes on antiques made of oak.

It so upsets me when I see people using spray "varnish" on new veneer when they have restored an item - and it looks like a dried orange skin finish

I’m sure you’ve seen comments already that you shouldn’t use polyurethane on these machines, rather, you should use a shellac. Yes, bees wax is the correct material to seal the gasket. There are also rebuild kits available for these reproducers too. Be careful with the bearings that are in the tips of the governor as they are easy to lose, and hard to replace if lost!

Not easy to do a good job on panels that were made as cheaply as possible. Full size vehicle panels back in the '50s/'60s needed a lot of massaging before painting.

I noticed you didnt fit the reproducer soundbox gaskets correctly, they need to be a excess tight fit before installing otherwise it will leak air and you get the bad rattley sound as heard here. Its usually a specialist job, it took me ages to get correctly myself. It would be good if you could revisit this and try new tighter fitting seals as you will be impressed with the sound quality😎.

Have you tried wiping down the cylinder with TURPENTINE? This literally melts the surface, leaving a smooth, shiny blank on which to record! I've done it dozens of times with moldy brown wax cylinders, and the results are spectacular. I own an Edison Home Model 2-minute machine from ca. 1904, precisely similar to yours.

Nice job. When I polished my reproducer, I found out that the nickel plating was extremely thin, and it basically just came off by polishing. Dunno how you got away with it. I replated mine, looks fantastic. One thing I was surprised by, as I had never operated a Victrola before, was just how loud they play. With medium volume needles, I would still keep one door closed for comfortable volume level.

  • @Duckcalculator
    @Duckcalculator15 күн бұрын

You figure that if you can’t increase the volume, but you can decrease it, you’d want it to play as loud as possible
