Restoration of Old Rusted Bowie Knife
Hello folks! Today I have a restoration of a very old Bowie knife. The knife is so rust! In some places, the blade has become thinner than a leaf. But, he got into the right hands and I will bring him back. Let's start the restoration!
The first thing I did manually was to remove the rust layer. Then he placed it in a jar and filled it with a rust remover, then washed, dried and treated the surface of the wire iron brush.
Then, with of a sanding machine, I corrected the cutting edge and the shape of the Bowie knife. Also made new bevels. The surface was lightly sanded, polished and degreased completely. Then he etched the blade in a solution of nitric acid. I really wanted to preserve the texture of the blade surface as much as possible. I did it.
Next, the handle of the knife, I made according to the classics using a deer horn. For the padding, I used mahogany wood and leather.
The sheath for the knife was made of genuine thick leather. And I did a very interesting Bowie knife test. The steel turned out to be wonderful! I hope you enjoy this restoration video.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Thank you Brian!
such an impressive little all purpose knife, so versatile, can see why they were popular.
You never disappoint me. That Bowie is perfection. There was nothing you did with that blade that wasn’t spot on. The only thing that upsets me about this one is that I can’t wear it on my belt. Keep doing what you are doing comrade.
You have tons of patience man, another masterpiece!
Excellent video, beautiful project, warm greetings from Costa Rica
*_I love the amount of love and dedication you show on these restorations!_*

Your very welcome brother. Keep up the good work.

One of those annoying, but in the end, cool accidents. The stacked leather in the handle looks great. 👍

keeping the pitting on the blade will always remind me of flint knapped tool heads which I love but don't have much practical use for. Got so excited when you brought antler out for the handle. Perfect choice even if it struggled to be born.
04:34 - i like the look of the blade here, almost looks copper.
Definitely one of the more complex hilts you've made. This was interesting to watch. 👏😀
Beepbeep Alex🤓, Another beatiful and great restoration 👏👍🗡️ Congratulations and Friendship from Belgium, Friend...😉🇧🇪👋🇬🇪
That knife looks like it came out of an American movie Those type of bowies are known for old west guys carry a big knife I'm glad that you didn't give up For me I know I give up as soon as it started breaking apart That looks like you made an incredible knife out of that
Beautiful outcome as usual, and I love the texture of that blade.

I am with those who were afraid this one could not be saved. The pitting looked so deep that trying to grind it flat would leave nothing but you proved us wrong by not trying to grind it flat! There was more “meat” left than it seemed. Another piece of “junk” saved from the scrap pile and given a new life. This must be very satisfying for you.

I remember ‘brazing’ brass parts decades ago. You have the join, but all the same color, and harder than solder. I used a dual carbon rod electrode with my Lincoln arc welder on a low setting.

Alex, again you have surprised me, Sir. When I saw how bad that was pitted and the cutting edge was destroyed, you said it was too thin to weld. I figured you would have to cut so much off it would be way smaller than the original but you did it again. That was a most impressive knife it took a beating and stayed sharp and strong. Great Job sir, you are a master!
...LOOKIN' GOOD, NICE WORK, KEEP WELL...
That was one tough handle. Turn out great. Your leather work is awesome. Maybe shouldn't have gotten rid off all those bottles lol.
