    I honestly didn't understand Martin until seeing this video. The production value of his videos made it feel like the MMX was pretty much done. The simplified narratives made it feel like the machine was only a couple of small problems away from finished. I had no idea it was so prone to failure still. Martin was right.

    What an incredible achievement it was for just one man to get this machine as far as it got before the musikkabinet team took over, acknowledging of course just how many people contributed in various ways while Martin was assembling too. This series has been “instrumental” in helping us all understand why Martin nixed it. Thank you to everyone for making this content available

    I’m a kind of engineer and have had to deal with scope creep and unexpected problems that propagate into other issues so, while I was watching the videos for this machine I always had a feeling of a lot of things that could become issues down the line. Some of them did and some of them didn’t, but I was not surprised in the least when Martin called it quits on that machine because it happened right around the time that I figured a lot of those potential issues would start to become unavoidable. Most people don’t have that sort of mindset so I am not surprised to see that a lot of people thought that Martin just gave up on the machine right as it was almost ready to go. So I really appreciate your crew proving that, no, it wasn’t almost ready and that, yes, there was a heck of a lot of work to get the machine to play a song even somewhat unreliably. All of that to say thank you for all the effort you have put into this project! In proving how much work was left you had to do said work. And I, like many others, had years of emotional investment in it. It makes me very happy to see it taken to this point and that the work that is left is in good and caring hands!

    @@jefferi78, the escapement gates were tricky to get going, there we were glad to have JBert with a seemingly endless supply of patience to get them going. Other parts went better, for instance the marble tracks in the frame are not acting up anymore since we fixed them relative to each other and the frame. Even if it would be nice to have more height to navigate there it works fine enough with what we have. I mean, we got it working well enough and it played for two long days during the meetup, and the fatal flaw that kept it from playing on the third day has been fixed as well by now.

    A historic video that deserves maybe millions of views as a coda/closure to the entire Martin MMX playlist. It would be interesting to get the teams thoughts on whether the project could have been completed by any single person, even Martin (does anyone know how many hours this all took in total?) This is an extraordinary team effort - not least in organisation and team-building (inc relationships and motivation!). So much problem solving - the whole project deserves a full multipart documentary series on all the different aspects (backstory, management, skills, biggest issues etc). I hope it's picked up by TV somewhere. #BBC where are you?! Huge thanks and appreciation to everyone.

It is what makes humans who we are. More than survival in life. We need creation for the sake of creation! Art for the sake of art! Dreams for the sake of dreams! Well done! 👍 I always loved the more collaborative moments in this machine! This is a proper gift to Martin, and a celebration of a true piece of history. The machines true value is it stands as a testament of “cross continent passion driven collaboration”. Its legacy will shape the future in ways, many of us are just starting to understand! I hope you can find a compelling way to display and celebrate that in your museum!

    It's marvelous to see, but after a series of poor design decisions in the construction of mmx, martin did make the correct decision to abandon this as a touring instrument. It will make a nice museum display, but even from this presentation it is obvious that it will take a team to keep it in playing condition.

    It depends a bit on how one defines properly. It plays well enough, as long as one accepts some floor marbles. Many parts of the machine work well, there are just also a bunch of things that might have been done differently. One of the things that would not make it touring-friendly is how precisely levelled it needs to be, so setting it up in a new spot takes a moment - also to settle. So it's being levelled and a bit later you have to level it a second time. And maintenance-friendliness is not really a part of the design principle which also isn't ideal for touring^^

  • @robinj6997

    @robinj6997

    It can make sound, but not music. There is a lot of issues. It's a instrument for one person, but in the video they are four people. Two people stabilizing it in the back. The guy to the left, who is stabilizing the machine, seems to distribute marbles by hand after the de-magnetizer wheel. One is pulling the crank, but only at low rpm, high rpm will make it rattle and break. Fourth person runs around and fixes small problems. There is a marble stoppage at the bottom shot within the first seconds of playing. There is about 10 marbles stuck on top of the snare drum. There is no bass guitar. The vibraphone is heavily out of tune, especially the second one from the left. Sometimes the gate drop no marble, sometimes two are dropped at the same time. The marbles miss the flytraps and end up on the floor. And this is only for one song. When/if it would be able to play one song. Can they change the programing wheel for a new song? If they disassemble it for touring, how long would it take to reassemble? This machine can't be finished, it's a sunken cost fallacy. Martin did the right thing to start over.

    @@robinj6997, well observed^^ By now the MRL1MRL2Transition mostly needs looking out for if there is a whole lot of marbles wanting to come up, which is only the case after some testing or something where gates were activated but the machine not cranked. One of the pipes leading into the fish stair can have marble pinching spring steel, so one lane can need intervention to not jam. During the meetup we would pluck out rusty marbles that didn't run smoothly down the marble swoosh, that prevents jams. The divide-by-four needs to be watched and can need manual convincing to flow to make sure the pipe leading from the marble divider to the divide-by-four doesn't fill up, leading to a backup in the marble divider. That's another step where removing rusty marbles improves the whole performance. To run it for a longer time and be comfortable it currently needs three tinkerers who are very familiar with the machine, one cranks and one per side. When two marbles drop too quickly in succession on the snare they start to interfere with each other, one can for instance not get enough of a jump to make it to the funnel, or gets too much of a jump and is yeeted away. The bass also has comparable issues as the swinging of the string will have an impact on the jump the marble can take. The vibraphone funnels catch many marbles, but many also drop either in front of them or behind them. When cranking fast, which is usually not the case, then the machine needs to be held by people on both sides. But with practice also that gets better, because depending on how one cranks it has far less swaying movements. Carlos had composed and programmed a bass track for the marble machine song, but we didn't activate it in that moment.

    For some strange reason Lucas has so far not wanted to get one of those wonderful vibration dampening optical lab tables, despite my asking ;) /s The vibrations aren't that bad, tbh, if one pays attention to how one cranks, and we usually don't go to very high bpm's. Vibration dampening feet are something to keep in mind, but time will tell whether it actually becomes necessary to look into options. DFTBA!

    Everybody in the restoration team is aware of Martin's work, but "No" to the second question. The whole point was to solve the puzzle that Martin left us by disassembling the machine and donating unused parts. From here on out it will be a museum piece and no further development will be done one the MMX other than making sure it doesn't break when somebody looks at it wrong. The agreement with SMMK and Martin is that anything which isn't outright broken stays as it is or gets replaced with an identical copy.
