Restoration of a WW2 vintage Tissot watch - Manual work - Radioactive ASMR - caliber 27-3

Ғылым және технология

In this video I make a restoration of a WW2 vintage watch from Tissot, its an antimagnetique mechanical watch from the beginning of 1940 with a caliber 27-3 movement. In this restoration I do a manual cleaning and polishing, everything is manually done. This watch movement has 15 jewels and with shock protection. It’s a manual hand wind movement (you wind it via the crown to give it power). This watch is non-magnetic (Antimagnetique) which can withstand electromagnetism, electromagnetism can easily make a watch useless. Tissot made the first Antimagnetique watches during the 1930s, you can read more via link down below.
During the restoration when opening the Tissot watch I wear a breathing mask because these old watches had often Radium on the dial and hands for the lume. Radium is still Radioactive because the most stable isotope of Radium has a half life of 1600 years (isotope of radium is 226Ra with a half-life of 1600 years [Wikipedia]). I couldn’t see any lume glow on this watch so maybe this didn’t have Radium but I cant be sure.
This vintage watch works but is full of dirt, so I don’t think it works very well and it’s hard to wind the watch via the crown. Through this restoration I saw that the jewels might be a bit to worn, the oil just sank through the jewels to fast but still I think the condition of the watch is much better now.
After the restoration the Tissot watch works fine, I noticed it’s maybe 30 seconds to slow over 12 hours, fairly good for a vintage watch but I will adjust it and wore it more to check the time.
-----------
In this video:
-Disassembly of the watch and check for problems
-Inspection of all parts if they are worn or broken via the microscope. The stem and the keyless works has some rust on them, I sanded the stem to try to remove some rust but it's deeper in the metall. I didn't sand the keyless parts.
-Manual cleaning, I do this with Rodico (Bergeon), some toothpicks, peg wood. Then let all parts be in bensin and later a double bath of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol). After the IPA batch I blow all parts with air until they are totally dry. The pallet fork and balance wheel (with its spring etc) can’t be in IPA for too long (a few seconds).
-Manual polishing with 2000 grit paper so you don't cut any angles of the steel of the watch. Then cloth polishing to just lay down those high spikes in the metall so the surface will be more shiny.
-Change glas of the watch to a new plexi glas without a steel ring.
-Inspection if all parts are clean via the microscope
-Assembly and oiling all relevant parts
If you like the video, I’m very happy if you subscribe (maybe put a comment?) to my channel and hit the like, more videos will come! Take care and thank you for this time!
This is not a tutorial video, Im just a hobbyist and might do things incorrectly.

ah yes the classic when a part pings off from tweezer... when I saw you send the broken screw to fly I immediately had flash back of my pain, I was trying to hold the sweep pinion with my tweezer and oil it before putting it back to the movement but ping, ok stay calm dont get panic, I spend 2 hours after searching for it but nope. It went to a different dimension. Atleast I was able to order replacement part...

Its really helps if you shape your tweezers correctly if you want to avoid that. Don’t know how to describe, but you might be able to google it. Otherwise ask a watchmaker. And a robot vacuum cleaner with magnetic strip underneath is perfect when you lost a screw :)

Hello Walther, nice to have you here. Broken screws can be very hard to extract, I got lucky on this one, but put some oil on it first, let say Moebius 9010, let it sink, then try a broken stake or something that fits so it can "fill" the broken part of the screw, hope it goes better next time =). Thank you for the kind comment Walther, have a good day.

Nice work. Not a week ago I just finished a teardown of a Tissot "Antimagnetique" myself although it has a center seconds sweep hand (27-2T) instead of the sub second your project featured. Serial Number puts it at 1948. The balance shaft needed replacing, as did the mainspring but all in all it came out gorgeous.

A fantastic restoration of a beautiful vintage Tissot! I've often wondered, if you wanted to, is it possible to restore the dial and hands to an excellent condition?

Hello Cris, thank you very much. I dont know if it's the same watch then. This dial has some value in its history I think. So if it's going to look like new you scrape it to bare metall and repaint it I guess. But it's possible to do in other ways also I guess. I'm not expert on this :)

I have exactly the same watch by design and look of the dial, hands and the casing, event the shape of letters engraved on the back are identical. I use it occasionally. The only difference is that the name is 'Athos' - it was my first wristwatch I got from my parents back in 1972. I wonder whether they first manufactured Tissots and when the tools wore down a bit they still produced identically looking but lower class product?

What a great story Grzegorz, thank you for sharing it! Maybe there was some rebranding of Tissot, some watches back in the days could be ordered in catalogues (post order), maybe this was something like that. It is a Tissot but another brand who's selling it. But that's just a guess. Lovely watch, cool that you've had it for that long, great story.

Nice. I am very interested in the caliper and how to get accurate measurement. On your video you took a few measurements of the crystal - 21.16, 21.17, 21.18, etc., which is recommended by experts. My question is, if the arms of the caliper can only measure the widest sections of the circumference, why aren't all the measurements exactly the same? (This question is because I am having difficulty with it myself.) Thanks!

oh boy, these movements have given me so much grief! I worked on like three of those, and all of them had problems: the plates/bridges are alumnium, so the steel screws get absolutely stuck in them over the years, the cap jewel plate screws were broken in the same way as yours on two out of three, and the hairsprings are so fragile that they sometimes get bent at the regulator arm by just removing the balance as usual. also, I'm honestly surprised the mainspring in yours was the modern S-shape - all of mine had the blue "kanelbullar".

  • @_f355

I've also thought how good it would be to dip the aluminium plates in the (very) dilute hydrochloric acid to remove all the staining, but our nanny state does not allow regular people to buy "dangerous chemicals"...

Sir, this is the way a watch should be serviced. Superb video. Can you please let me know what are the solutions required to clean the parts and which oil goes to lubricate which parts. This will help me to understand better the intricacies of watch service. Kindly reply to my queries. Thank you.

Hello Sir, thank you for watching my video and I'm very happy that you found it entertaining. First of every part is cleaned with tooth picks, rodico, brush with some gasoline (chemical clean). Then the parts is dipped into gasoline, for maybe 1 h, depends on amount of dirt. Later on every part is double dipped in 2 separate bath of IPA (new IPA), not the balance and the pallet fork. After each cleaning step every part needs to be blown dry. Later inspect all parts, jewels needs to be shiny like a mirror, inspect with atleast 30x microscope, prefer 45x+. A rough explanation :).
