The first clocks didn't have a face, only a bell to announce the hour. The word clock comes from the words in various old european languages, all literally meaning a bell. The oldest one in working order is in Salisbury, from 14th Century. The mechanism is on display there.

There is just something SO satisfying about watching a venerable old watch like this being given a second life through skill, care and attention. In a throwaway automated consumer world, these videos are like a little bit of heaven. THANK YOU!

I have two Komandirskie’s, a tank commander, and a submarine commander. They are amazing fun watches, especially as I only paid £25 pounds each for them. Both of them keep excellent, accurate time. Thanks for yet another superb video.

@@Pacyuchina начинается. Именно по часам в СССР неплохо было, часовая промышленность была развита довольно хорошо. В некоторые годы около 60% продукции часов за год шла за границу и не только в соц. блок. Некоторые редкие модели стоят довольно дорого, по 20к долларов за штуку.

Yeah a interesting thing is that the company vostok still sells the movements separatly so thats also a way however it wont be the movemnt the watch came with obviously

They can built no-nonsense machines and weapons with a simple design, easy to maintain, easy to use and enormously reliable. Whether it's Lada cars, Kalashnikov assault rifles, Makarov pistols or Vostok watches, they all have one thing in common: They don't work extremely precisely, but they work under practically all conditions, even under those which almost guarantee failure of more sophisticated products.

@@EVGENIYpotroshenko Системный блок компа - это 8 деталей. И они большие и осязаемые. Часы как разбирают и собираются я вижу в первый раз и это так мелко, что моё терпение бы кончилось в течении нескольких минут. Ну и деталей намного больше чем 8. Так что да, для новичка это мрак! Суть в том, что когда для тебя это ново - то ты действительно удивляешься этому волшебству. Ну, а для мастера конечно же это рутина!

I have this exact watch! my grandparents gave it to me as a gift when I was a child when they visited Russia and almost 40 years later it still keeps great time. Very cool to see the inner workings. Fantastic work!

.........Smart grandparents.....Today's Vostok Amphibian is the perfect gift for a male who still wears a watch. (phones).....I just had a niece get married....her husband has a watch "thing" like me...one day I handed him a boxed Amphibian....he couldn't stop staring at it.

@ yeah, you're right. A lot of those watches were quite expensive in the Soviet times and were considered sort of like a currency in case the economy crashes. A paper band on those vostoks is not a simulation, it's just so the watch will not tumble inside the box and scratch, by the way. I've seen some NOS condition ones, but sometimes the price is just too steep even here in post Soviet countries, especially if you add in the price of a needed service to wear it. Anyway, it's nice to know someone else is enjoying these vintage soviet classics.

You can get entry level tools pretty cheap, and there are tons of cheap watches out there for you to -destroy- practice on. That's what I'm on my way towards.

A Vostok watch in this condition you can get it for cheap as 30-40$ for the restoration, you need some parts, glass, maybe a new movement. About 100$ you can make it look like new. The problem is the same watch in good condition you can get it for 80$ and you ready to wear it.

I'm glad you restored this little gem. Vostoks are the coolest watches, with all the different dial images they have. This one had that really beat up crystal, but under it was that beautiful deep blue dial. You transformed it into a collector's piece.

For steel-steel friction pairs, semi-synthetic oil is used, any competent craftsman must know this. Something like this. And it doesn't matter how much the watch costs, otherwise it turns out that cheap watches are oiled with oil for sewing machines.

У меня есть такие же, носил в детстве). Но только сделанные уже в России. У моих циферблат весь в трещинах, а у этих почти как новый. Я удивлён, настолько снизилось качество циферблатов или условия эксплуатации? Я аккуратно носил).

I have the Aero version, which my late aunt, an Air France stewardess, bought when she flew to the CCCP in the 60's. While mine still works well and keeps good time, it could use a good service.

Я то же самое проделывал 40 лет назад хомутной иглой переточенной под отвёртку и хирургическим пинцетом на газете. Ещё в ухо дышат 3-4 любопытных. Чинил часы всему общежитию мединститута. Главное зрение и пальцы. Лупой даже не пользовался. Раньше у часов были тяжелые маятники и при падении с небольшой высоты сразу ломалась ось. А сегодня отнёс дрель на ремонт не хочется ковыряться,

It's amazing to watch every episodes, how you restore broken watches and giving them the SECOND LIFE. I have the same Soviet watch myself, not working, but I love it's roughness says so much about the SOVIET PRODUCT. How I wished you can restore it for me just like in the video. Salute to Meister !
