Restoration of a Military Watch - British Army G10 - Fail!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this restoration of a Military Watch not everything goes to plan! This British Army quartz watch by CWC came to me with a dead movement and glass so scratched that it looks frosted. In the video I restore that watch and have a cunning plan to make it look super special once it is working but then things start to go wrong.
In this video I also explain the numbering system that is printed on the back of all british military watches.
I do not do much talking in this video leaving, for the most part, the action on screen to tell the story.

Needless to say I have subscribed to your channel and will enjoy watching your past videos and future content. Thanks again, Clive.

    Superb, entertaining and instructive. So pleased to see my Royal Navy G10 also have a walk-on part in the film! As for the strap, Silvermans sell a canvas NATO where the eyelets are stitched not riveted. They say it is a snug fit but that it will fit although I haven’t bought one yet. I assume the stitch reinforcement is just a little more forgiving than metal eyelets.

    Wow Richard! What a beautiful field watch! I think the camo kaki NATO strap it came in was also beautiful. I was worried about the second hand position, until you blow it in the right place ;-) ETA quartz movements are precise and it is a pleasure to see the second hand stopping for a second right over the second/minute mark. One question: this watch dial has no date window, so you've taken off the date wheel and the related setting wheel, I guess this movement has also a "quick set" date with the crown in first position, how do you handle the "ghost" date position of the crown, it will be possible to also fix it in order to let the crown "jump over" it in some way? Thank you for sharing this beautiful video, I'm slowly opening my mind about quar(t)z watches, this one is gorgeous! Sorry for my poor English, I hope you'll understand my question.

    Hello, a very informative video. I previously thought tension ring, armoured, acrylic crystals needed a press to remove/replace but your crystal lifter worked very well - even though the Bergeon No 4266 is advertised as suitable for crystals without tension ring. How did you judge that it was appropriate to used the lifter rather than the press? Is it the fact that it is acrylic rather than glass? I would like to do the identical job on my CWC G10 so need to understand which tool to buy. Many thanks.

    Hi Brian you are wise to ask as there was some pressing done off camera. In fact the press is maybe more helpful than the grab.. I would invest in a press and then buy a few different sizes of crystal as they are quite cheap. Then press home the largest that you can. Hope this helps. Richard

    Good job Richard . I really like these military watches . My only problem with them is that they're quite small . What are they 34 or 35 mm . Pity about the strap but no big deal 👍.Those fixed pins did you no favours there

    Richard what's the pecking order regarding watches in the army? My nephew was commissioned in the RE and all ranks at his depot seemed to sport various G-Shocks. Secondly at 09:31 the Spanish Inquisition surplus device. Does it slightly compress the crystal?

  • @richardperrettwatchmaker

    @richardperrettwatchmaker

    Hi twozerouk .... so, guards officers wear whatever they like and don't give a monkey's what anyone thinks because this is just how they approach life and I am a fan of this, teeth arms officers wear digital watches as telling the time on an analogue watch they find challenging and engineering unit personnel wear quartz watches (many are g-shocks as you observe) as they understand that these actually tell the time. The Spanish Inquistion device (love that!) does slightly compress the crystal ... you know when you have gone to far as there is a loud crack and a small piece of acrylic whizzes past your eyeball at mach 8! Good to hear from you sir! Richard

    People generally aren't issued watches anymore. I don't know of anyone who has been issued one. G Shocks probably are the most popular watches but obvs not issued.

    I think I might have been forced to get the "Big Persuader" (14lb sledgehammer) out to flatten those eyelets but I'm sure you don't have one in your workshop. 😀 Great video as ever Richard, a reminder to me to give my G10 some wrist time and also to give this a "Like". Keep safe, keep sane and keep posting such informative and interesting content Richard. 👍👍👍

    Does everyone in the forces get issued a watch, or does it depend on your role? I had a riveted NATO, had to remove spring bars to fit, the eyelets rusted, obviously not stainless, binned.

    Being a Pulsar collector I am trying to get at a decent non "pull my pants down" priced Pulsar G10 and the RAF chrono issue for my collection as I do have a standard "civilian" version of the Pulsar G10 and have civilian themes of Pulsar's dancing hands models V601 and V691 but the civvy versions just have standard casebacks. I remember the war of ego's at Woolwich where the RSM hated quartz and expected one to have a damned good automatic and the adjutant who hated mechanicals and expected one to have a bally good quartz and none of this soppy NATO straps either, you bought from the barracks store a brown or black leather cuff strap which had a pop down hood to cover the head and offer no shine.

    I am suffering at mo a NATO on my rebuilt Invicta Russian Diver I put a new movement into, gave a nice clean and tidy inside and out, made a long stem using them Chinese stem extenders and put a nice stainless steel crown under that massive canteen crown, bought a handmade thick and distressed hide Zulu in brown for it which is really a "homage" to a Zlatoust but I can't afford a Zlatoust so Invicta all the way :D

    can you fit the circuit or the coils from a 955.112 to a 955.102? I wouldn't call a riveted strap not fitting a fail. I can get a 955.102 for my 95 G10 and can still buy an NOS one but wonder if it's not worth just putting a new 955.112 in it rather than an old movement even if there is the originality aspect to it.

    Hi Richard. You’ve inspired to restore one myself. Just one quick question, why don’t you use a press to put on the crystal? Thanks in regard

  • @richardperrettwatchmaker

    @richardperrettwatchmaker

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi benc80906 ... this 'crystal' in these watches is actually acrylic and designed to flex. This flex is utilised by the 'crystal' grab to shrink the diameter of the arcylic and slot it into place before releasing it where it gribs the case due to the outward pressure exerted by the springy acrylic. A crystal press would push onto a piece of acrylic too large to go into the case and quite quickly break it. Hope this explains. Richard

    Hi Cherry Brandy ... good to her from you! There are several key dimensions in the candidate movement that have to be exactly right for this to work. Most import of these is a thing called 'stem height'. In practice it is normally pretty tricky to pull this off but not impossible. Hope this helps. Richard

If so, can you please show how, or just point me where to get sapphire crystal which would fit, it would make one already excellent watch a true masterpiece. Thanks.

    Excellent video Richard! I have my father's "fatboy" version G10 that has a faulty movement. What replacement movement do you recommend for this one as I understand that the 955.112 doesn't work for due to the stem height? The original 536.121 movement is impossible to get hold of. Your recommendation would be much appreciated!! I have liked all your videos!! 🤣

    Great as usual. A bit disappointed by not seeing a mechanical movement. Regarding the strap is it possible to remove both pins from the lugs and place back once the Nato strap has been positioned to its ideal place? This way avoiding bottle neck when it comes to metal rings!
