Responding to Criticism, and Accepting the Way Things Are | Being Well Podcast

Criticism is an unavoidable part of life. But even though we’re all going to be criticized from time to time, many of us spend much of our lives living in fear of criticism. Then, on the flip side, we’re all critics ourselves. We’ve all been in situations that aren’t quite what we want them to be - so we need to either do something to change them or accept them as they are.
On this episode Dr. Rick and I focus on how we can get better at receiving and giving criticism, learn to accept what lies outside of our control, and avoid the “mood of complaint.”
New Course From Rick! Learn the lessons of a lifetime in the new and improved Foundations of Wellbeing 2.0 program. This yearlong, online program teaches you how to grow the 12 key inner strengths that lead to lasting wellbeing during difficult times. Wow, that critic person had some SERIOUS issues, wtf...😆 You really do have a lovely, very pleasant voice to listen to! That's the truth. And honestly, I don't know if I could listen otherwise, LOL. I'd DEFINITELY notice at least.... I'm very sensitive to annoying voices, even of ppl whose content, thoughts & POV I enjoy!

I think you both respectfully present topics. I like how you share your own experiences. I never feel that either of you force opinions or facts. I feel sincerity from you both. I hope you two will continue sharing and helping us(me) to grow in compassion and understanding. I think that Forrest is an exceptional host who researches the topic, and who lets his guests share completely without interrupting. 💙

I couldn’t concentrate for the first part of the podcast, I was so annoyed and upset about the criticisms of you Forrest, 😱😤😂. Good thing I could go back to the beginning and learn not to get so upset about the fact that sometimes people feel the need to criticise the KZreadrs I really like 😂 (completely undeserved IMHO, but they can just not watch if they can’t appreciate the value of the content on this channel)

It's funny how Rick says "I did poorly or I could do better" cause I never felt either of you did poorly! You two are my favourite. Thank you so much a special thanks to Rick's empathic demenour and Hansson's aware one. You two are so beautiful.

Forrest… you were sweet to choose the criticisms directed toward you. ❤️‍🩹 People love to complain especially when it’s not in person… you can’t please all the people all the time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sometimes other people want us to accept their performance 🎭 and deny our reality. I refuse to be an enabler.

I've seen so often that people use criticism to try and confirm their very existence. "I complain, therefore I AM! " And that is so sad.

What an intelligent contribution you are both making. Your passion for psychology is contagious. It's my go-to podcast of the moment. I am really into somatics and have loved the ones with Elizabeth!! When i receive criticism or ask for feedback, I try to tell myself "In a world of 8 billion people there will always be 8 billion opinions!". Someone's "your voice is annoying" is another person's "speak louder for the people in the back!" ❤❤

I just love listening to you guys...I started in the hot weather of this summer, exercising, and now I'm sitting by a fire equally enjoying your conversations. I'm fascinated by your kindness and clarity. I've been attending Al-anon meetings daily and the message is similar. I also love to see the wonderful relationship between father and son. So inspiring!

Always nice to hear your deep dives. One time in my life I could do that, before the 1980s, actually. Its nice to find it again. That it can still happen ...and in a father-son relationship, wow not even in the 1970s (especially not then). Quite a measure of possible growth.

Omg and here I am LOVING you so much in every show! My critique of folks- they miss out on things (I’m sure they have many blind spots) and linger on one side of the spectrum aka not dynamic. ❤ Your Goldie Locks analogy is amazing. I relate to that spot on. Thank you for the insight there.

I am so sorry you have been criticized with ridiculous comments in the beginning of the video. ❤️ You guys are GREAT! My therapist taught me a phrase: "Useless Commentary" Only thing I could think of is, you guys are gushy and lovey to each other... and that is MY problem LOL. Seriously though, yours and your fathers relationship and positive, loving, upbuilding comments are good examples for all.

Most complaints arise from emotional dissatisfaction. That is profound. But it only applies to non sociopaths and non manipulators in general.

Pam Parker 0 seconds ago I looped back to this episode - there’s a lot of constructive advice here! Lean in and get at the deeper matter and unravel the emotional solution if you will. Question: If the complaint uses loaded language like ‘you always treat me like and child’ and ‘I am a moron in your view’ is that deserving of a reply other than addressing the impact of that kind of communication? Or, in other words, does moving to the solution when someone is creating a hostile tone condoning their approach that makes you feel like you are being attacked unfairly? This is a workplace context and feels like what Forest calls ‘establishing power over the other’ but wrapped up in personal criticism (you do this, I am in charge that, etc).

Why do you care about whether you get a positive or negative review? You need to be yourself and have a purpose, you were not born to be a slave to other people's opinions... to be some insect that feeds on approval.
