    This is sooo helpful!!! In nursing school they told us, “We aren’t training you to be ICU nurses, we are training you to be great floor nurses.” Which is understandable but we learned absolutely nothing about mechanical ventilation, and I found myself starting in the ICU a couple years ago having to learn what I could on the unit about vents and the rest I had to teach myself! So I very much rely on videos like this to help me understand! You explained this so clearly, THANK YOU. I will absolutely refer all my nurse friends to your channel for respiratory related topics! Thank you again!!

    As an ICU nurse, I LOVE this mindset towards nurses! I am blessed to work with some really awesome RTs who ALWAYS answer my call and come to help any time I call. That's how it should be and my patients are always better for us working together!

    I just want to thank you, I have only known about your channel for about a week and I have learned more in this week than I ever did in Nursing school. I don’t deal with Vents but I do deal with BiPAPs and your teachings are invaluable to me. Keep up the good work and if you were on call, I have no doubt that you would understand the nurses point of view. Shoutout to @Bailey Coggins. Proof positive that “not all heroes were capes.” Except for like graduation lol 😂

    You just spoke about RTs displaying numbers on the ventilators and I remembered when I was doing my Clinicals. They do not show the ventilator wave forms at my previous clinical location. I asked and they told me that they go by numbers at their hospital. I don’t know if that is because most of them are CRTs?

    It's easy to become judgmental and of a critical spirit when hospitals seem to have rules and policies that go against reason. As an RT for many years I've seen things that will make your head spin. Hospitals think like a business which sometimes conflicts with morality and progress. I've even been reprimanded for working too hard and making the other respiratory staff look bad. Don't be surprised if they don't have the waveform graphics turned on because it saves electricity. Who knows with those savings the hospital may be able to add an extra respiratory therapist to the floor. I've seen hospitals lie cheat and steal at the highest administration level. I've also seen CRT therapists that know more than RRT therapists. Go figure! Lol

    I've been called multiple times to my patients desating, and the issue was the patient wasn't on their oxygen or it was turned off by the nurse and they forgot to turn it back on. Some due diligence would be nice on the nurses part. Also, doctors and nurses need to quit missing with our ventilator without asking the RT.

    If just by looking on that waveform.. demonstrate a increase Airway Resistance... would it be safe at least to say that there could probably secretion blockage and needs suctioning?

  • @RespiratoryCoach

    @RespiratoryCoach

    Key word there is "could" be, but further assessment is needed to assess whether the increase in Raw is due to secretions or bronchospasm or potentially something else.

    I am a RN in Thailand and we have to do RT role here and my question is, most of ventilators setting is PCV mode and is it necessary to change to VCV mode to perform insp hold for PLAT? And if not how can we check lung compliance ?
