Resolving the Austin Healey Sprite's rattling fan blades and more! Bugeye build episode 141

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There's been some rattling coming from the front of the engine. The generator has been ruled out so I narrowed it down to loose fan blades. While working to resolve that rattle I discovered that I missed a lock washer behind the crank pulley bolt! How did I fix it? Watch this episode and find out.
Just a quick disclaimer... this may not be the "correct" way to do this job but it's how I did it with what resources I have on hand.

I love this series. Practical advice and demonstrations are worth a lot. My Frogeye retains its rear hinged bonnet; it's ironic that the front hinged conversion is designed largely for better access - not in this case! If you don't have one, I'd recommend getting a speed brace. I've had mine for over 45 years and it's saved hours and hours of time over the years compared to using a ratchet.

Thanks Roger. I do have a speed brace but keep forgetting to pull it out of the toolbox!

I'd tack weld the 3 parts of that fan assembly together.

Not a bad idea actually. I'm going to go with the later plastic six bladed fan... it's one piece and improves cooling.

@@EconoboxGarage I get that the six bladed fan works better, but I think I'll stick with the metal one (whenever I get to that point). Putting a chunk of molded plastic on the front of that beautiful engine just doesn't seem right to me -- although I may well feel differently when it overheats :)

The fan will still be bright yellow so as long as I keep it clean it shouldn't look too bad.

You made a meal of removing that crankshaft bolt. There are far easier ways. An appropriate ring spanner should be okay, turn it until it interferes with something and hit the starter (without ignition obviously) Always works.

I didn't have the right ring spanner and the socket was less expensive to purchase. I'm not sure if there is enough space between the pulley and the front cross-member to fully remove the bolt.

@@EconoboxGarage Fair comment Ian. It's been about 60 years since I fiddled with one of these and I can't even remember what that crankshaft bolt looks like. I still use the starter technique to undo those bolts however. They tend to be very hard to remove on modern cars and impossible if they are automatics.

I with thinking the same thing about using a spanner -- until reassembly when Ian pulled out the torque wrench. Although I imagine "really tight" would be precise enough for that bolt. I bought the spanner when I got my Bugeye, but the main reason was just to free the engine (which had been sitting for several decades).

Are you going with a later plastic fan? Nice work!!!

Thanks. Yes I am going with the later fan. It's somewhere floating around the USPS universe at the moment :) !
