What does the audience know? versus What do the characters know? No one knows the traitor, but the characters know more since they expirenced the heist, but when mr. orange is revealed, dynamic irony is created, we know more than the characters. Tarintino does this in a lot of his films.

Yeah, it's a reaction that to me proves he's not in too deep as JMR seems to believe. Orange shooting the woman was simply a reactionary movement due to his shock at being shot and you can see the regret in his eyes when he does it. That to me is less a sign of someone who's completely morphed into a villainous lifestyle and more the sign of someone who's playing the role (albeit he's doing a pretty good job at it) and just realized he took an innocent life. And when he kills Mr. White and reacts in much the same way it does feel to me like his forward motion thing is him still trying to convince himself physically that in this case he had to do it. That's how it reads to me anyways.

People seem to have all sorts of definitions for "psychopath", as it isn't used professionally it's hard to say who is right, but it's usually considered the layman equivalent of anti social personality disorder. Mr White definitely doesn't fit this, due to how he cares for Mr Orange. Psychopaths can barely comprehend the idea of sacrificing themselves for a friend, let alone actually doing it. Mr White has much more of a solider's outlook- he cares strongly about his comrades, but can comfortably kill the enemy. There is clearly one psychopath/sociopath (again, these are really pop psychology terms that don't have an accepted difference)- Mr Blonde. Even then, it's questionable if he's a total psychopath, because Eddie reveals that he stayed loyal and did his time in prison instead of ratting and taking a deal. But you could argue that was in his interest. Probably his most psychopathic act isn't cutting off the cop's ear, it's stopping for fast food on his way back from a heist with a cop in his boot. Total fearlessness.

  • @alexharvey6522

Reservoir Dogs is not "classic antihero film" it's a film that says "fuck the rules of writing ! we do what we want" . there is no protagonist everybody is the hero of his own story juste like in ..... real life . Mr orange view himself as the good guy because he's a cop he fights criminals who are bad guys but in Joe's point of view he's just a sneaky little bastards who sold them out . Mr. White views Mr. blonde as a crazy psychopath and nothing more but in Nice Guy Eddie's point of view Blonde is a brave man who spent years in jail for his father . as for Mr. Pink he thinks he's the only useful man in the job surrounding by idiots , psychose and traitors which makes him a protagonist in his head just like .... everyone .

How is Pink the protagonist? He gets little screentime, has little to no development or history and then gets caught and shot. Mr. White is the closest to a protagonist in this movie. He gets the most screentime and emotional buildup along with Mr. Orange, he's an open book we read and his character is reminiscent of ruthless noir leads. Mr. White is the protagonist while Mr. Orange is the deuteragonist. Everyone else is secondary.

I like your analysis of the film, but I disagree with all of the attempts (that you brought up) to diagnose the characters. Mr White, for instance, is absolutely not a psychopath. Whites feelings for Orange is the whole reason everything goes to s#!t. He just met the guy on this job and already he feels strongly enough for him to be willing to kill his old friends to protect him (even though it pains him, so much). That relationship is everything in this movie - I'm surprised you didn't get into that in greater detail. But good job, overall!

None of them were friends. Now Mr. Blonde was loyal to the boss but not friends. White only got attached because they both shot their way out together. Everyone went different ways and they ended up together. Kinda like how someone fall in love with someone else when they are saved by them. Even if it is a simple thing like thank you and I appreciate you. He got attached and was hired to do a job. None of them knew each other for the most part. Which is why they were given names. White was the first to say something after the job went south because he was sick of the name thing. He thought Pink would agree since he was sick of the name thing from the start. That's why it should have been easier to do a job together and not attached. But seeing a colleague shot right in front of you changed that. Mr. White was probably of an older generation where your coworkers go down with you and you do anything for them. It is not a loyalty to the boss but more that they fight and die together. That way nobody snitches if they get pinched either. He can't reason with Blonde but can with orange. So he trust him more and almost trusted Pink. The boss isn't someone you trust more because they just pay you for a job. Which he knew so that is also why he trusted the coworkers more. Besides Blonde because he was closer to the boss. The problem here is you don't know who is telling the truth like Mr. Pink says. Mr. Blonde could have done his stay in the joint but also flipped inside the joint possible given the option of a new life. The cops where also incompetent for allowing them to do the job when they where armed and around people. As soon as the cops couldn't handle the situation at the bank. They should have left them go and just followed them to the hide out. Instead they go out blasting and running after them. They also should have never tried to get them there at all and waited until everyone was at the hideout including the boss.

A "two-act" film that fits perfectly into a three-act structure. ACT 1 introduces the natural world/characters and asks the question who is the rat? Act 1 ends with officer in the trunk complication and the fact that they have to wait for Joe Cabbot. (this is an important detail -- you really don't get an answer as to who the rat is -- but you're locked into the narrative which is essentially going to be answering the question: who is the rat? and we have a ticking clock with Joe Cabbot... All of act 2 focus' on revealing who each of the characters are (this makes perfect sense when you think about the title -- it's not a movie named after the failed heist it's a movie named after it's characters). The midpoint of the 2nd act we get a not-so-shocking moment with mr.blonde almost killing the cop... The real stakes raising moment actually happens moments later when he's killed by Mr. Orange revealing Tim Roth to be the rat. Now the tail end of ACT 2 is giving us all the answers about the rat/undercover cop up to his "dark night of the soul" where he kills the woman in self-defense making him a reservoir dog like the rest of them (on some existential/philosophical level). ACT 3 actually begins with the results of all this back at the warehouse (eddie returns) -- stakes are further raised when the cop is killed - Joe Arrives and everyone is at each others throats. The reason this gets called 2-act film is because it doesn't have an epiloguey ending - but I think the film is over and all questions are answered because the hiest is a mcguffin and the real story is character driven with mr.orange/mr.white having a tragic father/son moment. At least this is the way I've already interpreted the story.

Really great and thorough dissection of Tarantino's first feature film! Love this movie. It has a fantastic cast, the few locations and props look just right (Tarantino went for quality, not quantity) and there is Andrzej Sekula's wonderful cinematography. I know it is just my personal taste, but this was all shot on my favorite film stock ever: Eastman EXR 50D, Super 35mm film - and it looks absolutely gorgeous here. The film stock certainly helps a ton making the sets, props and lighting (this film stock needs a LOT of light, so all scenes inside the warehouse had a lot of lighting, yet they don't look flat or cheap at all) look the best they can. Thanks, as always, for sharing your great insight. I never fully understood the color coding of the main characters, but I'm glad you shed some new light on it - as well as their psychology!

First time i watched this movie was back in 1995, i rented the VHS tape from Blockbuster and Took it home, i didn't know anything about the movie, i had been hearing about Tarantino and Pulp Fiction, but since that was not available i took this movie, after the Opening scene and opening Credits i Immediately rewound the movie back to the Beginning, i had to watch this again, and after the movie was over i rewound it all and watched it a second time, after that i told everyone i could find you got to see this.

Wasn't expecting such a professional, astute review on yt; my compliments. Saw this before Pulp Fiction came out, my buddy and I watched it 50 times, knew every line of dialogue but even so in 1993 all I noted was some name dropping (Honey West/"I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan), not what has be- come Quentin's patented imbuing his movies with his personal adoration of movies. Your review, Jack, helps shift Dogs into perspective. To those who saw Quentin's first movie when it first appeared there were no cliches yet or familiar Tarantino tropes. As much as I liked Pulp, I like this better. QT's yet to top these two. Thanks again for your intelligent insights.

Funny how I like the analysis of this movie more than the movie itself😅 I liked some individual parts of it and especially the visuals(camera work, composition, lighting and an indescribable atmosphere this movie posseses), I also really like the opening with "Little green bag" playing and them walking in slow motion, but the idea of it and the structure (which this video focuses on) is way more interesting and inspiring.

That shot with Mr. Pink and Mr. White with their guns pointed at each other is one of the best shot compositions I have ever seen. It shows so much about characters and their conflict. Mr. Pink is a slimy rat-man who fights to survive like an animal and Mr. White is a stoic, strong man who is more traditional and plays by the his codes. Both are in suits covered in blood stained suits because of an outward professionalism yet a actual brutality of the two men.

All these comments but i may be the only one who was impressed with a tiny part of the movie so much that i'm still wearing the item. Not the black suits or the white shirts and black ties. Here's what it is…Mr Orange's Ray Ban Clubmaster sunglasses. Damn, those shades are the coolest i have seen, they go as far back as some mid 50’s movies. Yep, thanks for that cool tip Mr Orange/ Taratino!

An interesting comparison for Mr. Blonde is his brother, Vincent, from Pulp Fiction, and how both of them died due to caving into their vices; In Vic's case, it was sadism and bullying, and in Vincent's, it was his heroin addiction. Remember: A symptom of heroin abuse is constipation, and Vincent uses the toilet a LOT.

I think Joe is the central villain of the story. He organizes and facilitates the heist, and while he is not directly responsible for other's actions, everything they do, as well as the events of the entire movie, could not have happened without him. He knowingly allows Mr. Orange on the team, and allows him to wreak havoc between their ranks. Consequentially, The Reservoir Dogs are all protagonists, each dealing with the situation Joe left them in their own ways.
