@eileensimpson, Greyhound racing in Idaho has been illegal for many, many years, so what you're talking about happened many, many years ago. How about living now and not in the past. Tracks are not horrible at all. If they were, greyhounds couldn't race on them. The tracks are groomed before each race to make them the safest place for the greyhounds to run.

@@momtoty have owned 2 separate greyhounds who were both rescues and lived long lives. Over the years my feelings on tracks and kennels have slowly changed. I have softened my feelings on them and in fact have seen how well some tracks have treated their dogs. I am now of the belief that most tracks try and do well for the dogs. I mean really they have to. I have seen some kennels even set up extremely nice living spaces for each of their dogs. My only concern now is the overbreeding of dogs because I believe that’s where some kennels get into trouble.

  • @momtoty

@@Tackleqb There is no overbreeding now since the tracks in FL closed. There are only 2 tracks left open in WV. There is a shortage of available greyhounds to adopt now because breeders aren't breeding like they used to and some breeders have stopped all together. Some adoption groups are getting greyhounds from IR, UK and AU to bring here so people can adopt them. My adoption group had to disband because we can't get any greyhounds now. It was a sad day when FL voted to close the tracks. A lot of people lost their jobs and their livelihoods. Many kennel owners went back generations and now it's all gone. Th love they had for their greyhounds was enormous. There were many tears shed when the last greyhounds walked out of the kennels for the last time.

@Eerie Sheena not like dog fighting but similar to circus animals. You could probably find out if you researched it but I wouldn't unless you live in an area where dog racing still happens. The more knowledge you have the better you can get it on your local voting ballot to get rid of it. It takes perseverance because these gambling companies have a lot of money to fight it. @itz1av3 What do greyhounds go through to learn how to race? What have you seen yourself? Greyhounds aren't forced to learn how to race. It's impossible. They just learn to chase after a toy and if they have no desire to chase, they get an early retirement and go home with their owner or go to an adoption group to get adopted. Nothing cruel ever happens to greyhounds. Cruelty won't produce a good racer. Quite the opposite. They get the best care and plenty of love. That's why they make such wonderful pets.

That is the ONLY person you should believe because her handler is the one that was with her 14 hours a day, 7 days a week until she was retired. You aren't stupid enough to believe abused greyhounds can race are you? It's not only impossible but it's against regulations. Did you ever reach out to talk to her handler? Greyhounds get the best care, better than a lot of adopted greyhounds do. I don't believe she was abused at all whether she was a bad racer or not. If she wasn't a good racer, the owner would retire her to an adoption group where you adopted her. The main purpose of racing greyhounds is to have them race their best so abusing them defeats the purpose. That's like beating up a football player and expecting him to play the game. It's always nice to see greyhounds featured on The Dodo. I've had greyhounds since adopting my first one in 2004, and they are absolutely wonderful, gentle, sensitive, and loving pets. They do require some extra patience in the beginning because literally everything is new to them: other breeds of dogs, stairs, windows, couches, etc. Paul's behavior was very normal. But, their real personality starts to emerge. We always like to say that you'll have a whole different dog a year later! They learn very quickly and become precious family members. I have three greyhounds waiting at the bridge and one wonderful dog, Flashy, with me today. He's my whole world!

Our greyhound, Archer (his racing name was Jitterbug but, we thought it was-blehh) came from the same track. Luckily for him, he wasn't particularly good at his job so his owner surrendered him to Greyhound Pets of America. At first, we were just fostering him but we were really total failures as foster parents since we almost immediately decided to adopt him. When he first came off the track he wasn't especially fearful of really anything-he'd never really suffered any trauma from people, but he was not really well socialized, much like Paul. He also had incredible difficulty with stairs. Up, he could do. Down....next to impossible. We were lucky to live in the Charleston, SC area since there was a huge GPA presence there and we'd often have meet-ups at a local (fenced in) dog park. The most incredible thing to see is a dozen or so greyhounds doing 40 mph together, not confined to a track. Best of luck with Paul. Working with these dogs has been one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences I've ever had. It's wonderful to see him in such a kind and caring home.

The sweetest, smartest, most loving dog I ever had was a "recycled racer." Her name was Grace. I had her for 10 beautiful years and she never barked once. While racing, they live in crates stacked high atop each other with ramps, so they have never used stairs. They have never had a toy. They are let out of their crates to pee on the "caretakers'" time schedule, so are not housebroken when you adopt, but they are wicked smart and learn very fast! They eat from huge community troughs so have never had their own food or water dish. It broke my heart. Her only goal in the last years of her life was to make me happy. I hope I made her just as happy. I miss her every day.

Paul is so beautiful! I am happy to see that Paul has a harness instead of a collar at a point in the video! Harnesses are more humane than collars and harnesses don't put pressure on the neck like collars do. I recently found out from a reputable holistic veterinarian that dog ear infection could be due to neck injuries and as a matter of fact, sometimes health problems in the head and ears are related to neck injuries so I hope all dog parents can use harnesses instead of dog collars. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I have a bicycle path/trail behind my home. It hurts my heart when I see people walking their dogs and jerking back on the leash. And so many do. I always wish I could do the same to them 😠. If you don't take the time to train a dog to listen to you, then at least have some compassion and put a harness on them instead of a just a collar.

  • @LoveKittiesLoveDoggos

@@sbffsbrarbrr Yes yes I fully agree! People do not need to read medical articles to know collars are bad and inhumane. Just the visual is enough to understand how inhumane it is to use a collar. Dogs are not slaves, they needed to be treated humanely. We do not “own” our dogs, we are their parents. If people do not use collars on their babies, why would they use collars on dogs?

Greyhound racing is extremely regulated, the dogs are well taken care of (they have to be to build that muscle mass), and don't suffer like other animals in other sports (like horse racing) typically do. They aren't inherently traumatized by the racing environment (which again, is actually adequate for their needs if you bother to look into it), but going from one very unique environment to a new one will be a process to feel comfortable for any dog. The dogs aren't forced to run.

  • @momtoty

@belindarocky961 Paul was never traumatized. He just needed time to adjust to his new life. He was always treated very well and loved by his handler. He was used to his life at a kennel and was surrounded by people and greyhounds every day. Then he was suddenly taken away from the life he loved and put in a home with strangers. He had to learn stairs and a whole new schedule. Once he learned his new routine, he was contented to be a house dog. It had nothing to do with his racing career.
