    This is when people need to have a t-shirt that says “ask me about my dog”. Or a shirt for the dog that says “ask about my rescue story”. It may help begin a much needed conversation.

    I took a rescue dog 4 years ago. Most of my life, my animals have always been rescue animals, (I used to live on a farm). She had been set on fire and her stomach used as an ashtray where they flipped her over and put their cigarettes out. She was skin and bones when I picked her up. The animal shelter had her for at least a month. No one wanted her. I saw her photo on the internet the night before and thought.... I'll give you a good home. Like your dog, she was afraid of everything. If I picked up a ball to throw for her. She would fall on the ground shaking, as if I was going to throw a rock at her. She now loves all people and all dogs. Two years later, I took in a five week old puppy. To her, he's the pup she never had. And to him, she's his mom. Like your dog, it took a bit of time to adjust and learn. Her tail rarely stops wagging. She's full of love and happiness and so is my life.

    Any other fairy tale stories? Pitbulls were never nanny dogs, maybe some of their predecessors, but there is no evidence. That breed was created speciffically for dog fights, hence the name - pitbull, because they fight in the pits and - the bull, because they were introduced as replacement for now forbidden bull fights

  • @JamieM470

    @JamieM470

    11 ай бұрын

    That would be really great if it were true. Sadly, it's not. That myth started from an article in the NY Times in 1971, in which a breeder of Staffordshire Bull Terriers mentioned that the dog was a great “nursemaid” for children. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not the same as the American Pit Bull Terrier, but most people confuse the two. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are traditionally show-dogs, registered with the AKC. They have been bred for their appearance (not for fighting) since the 1800s. Totally different breed. Pit Bulls were created for dog-fighting, right after bear-baiting was outlawed.

    @@elenalatici9568 Out of all the infants that are killed by canine attacks, 49% of them are by Pit Bulls--usually the family pet, in their own home, and unprovoked. Many times in the middle of the night while the infant is sleeping. The number 2 spot goes to Huskies at 13%, then Rottweilers 10%, German Shepherds 8%, etc. Victorian parents never trusted dogs bred for fighting with their infants. They were apparently smarter than we are today.

    I adopted a dog like Roman, who was a pit mostly abused by the first four years of her life. The first year I had her was a major challenge. She was scared of everything in her environment and freaked out if anything changed. After 5 years of major effort, she became an affectionate dog that I assumed that I would enjoy another 4 to 5 years. Sadly, she ended up with a rare blood cancer that badly hurt her brain causing her to terribly attack me one morning without notice. It wasn't her fault, it was the damage to her brain from the cancer. Sadly, I had to put her down, as she was not safe to be around any longer. As my physical wounds healed, my grief deepened to a pretty bad place. By chance, my vet let me know that one of clients needed to rehome her dog due to her future wife's allergies. I am so thankful for adopting this new dog, as he has provided the emotional healing I needed. Funny how life works.

    I understand your protectiveness when others judge him for his breed. We, too, have a very traumatized dog who is an American Bully. His head his huge. His ears are cropped (not by us). He is pure muscle. So people glare and cross the street. Reality...Hugo is the most docile dog I know (too much so in fact). I hope the breed stigma changes over time with more videos about their forgiving and friendly nature.

  • @JessieCristo

    As long as there are irresponsible owners, breeders and dog fighters the breed will never lose its stigma. The lovers of the breed or animals in general should just continue to spread awareness and love. Changing people's mindsets one at a time, if need be.

    None of you have much knowledge about the history of this breed. They were specifically bred to kill bulls… BULLS… and the most aggressive pups would be bred with the other most aggressive pups, leading to the engineering of more aggressive generations of pit bulls over time. This is in their blood. The worst part is, you cannot stop them from attacking someone unless you literally cut their air supply off or kill then, no other dog breed will relentlessly continue an attack unlike the pit bull does. I know that I’m going to be met with aggressive replies, and it’s understandable you people will get upset because you see this breed as part of your family, but you fail to acknowledge that you’re part of the problem. By buying these dogs you’re contributing to the continuation of this breed, when they need to cease to exist.

    Awww I have a girl just like Roman that’s named piglet we found her heading home from Colorado Springs one winter night and she was just wandering on the highway I’m still surprised to this day how she didn’t get hit or hurt at all unfortunately you could see that someone beat the breaks off her and she was beyond timid and scared luckily she trusted me and let me pick her up to put her in the car we’ve had her for almost a year now and she’s getting better physically and emotionally everyday now ❤

    I needed this. It’s been three to almost four months with a rescue, choc lab/pit mix. We adopted her, she was only 7 months and not one of the original five we had picked to choose from. She was a very sick pup. Eye, ear, and a suture infection. I named her Katie, she is beautiful, healthy now, and extremely smart. Skittish for sure around everything but she has grown to love and protect everyone in the family, wife, grandkids, my son and daughter, a mom in law… except me. I give her treats but she won’t take them until I turn my back, she cowers from me, despite my being the one constantly reassuring her. She is the only dog that hasn’t just taken to me. She loves my daughters dogs who get so excited when grandpa comes over and won’t leave me alone. I’m not giving up on her because she is awesome to watch with everyone, she will always be safe here and despite the frustration I have at not being able to make that break through, I love her and she makes me smile even though i know it’s one sided. I’m very happy for you and he is a beautiful bundle of joy. I wish you all many many years of happiness. Stay safe all

    Thanks for being patient with Roman, allowing him the time to overcome his fears. What a lovely boy he is! My husband's youngest brother and his wife adopted a Golden Retriever who had been shoved out of a car in a grocery store parking lot. That sweet girl had clearly been abused, and was very fearful of so many things. For example, she was terrified of the washer and dryer, so we thought she must have been beaten in sight of such machines. She was treated with love and patience, and finally relaxed. She enjoyed many happy years, and the whole family recalls her fondly. Thank God for all the special people who care for abused and discarded pets. Those dogs and cats repay with boodles of love.

    It makes me so sad when our furbabies have nightmares. 😭 I had a rescue cat, who, despite of the fact he was purebred ragdoll with documents to prove it, got thrown out of the house when he got sick. He wandered out all winter and was found in terrible state. He was afraid of women, but eventually got used to me. He never was afraid of my boyfriend. Still, I had to be very careful to move slowly, especially my hands, and not raise my voice while speaking. If I forgot those, he froze in horror. It revealed how his former owner had been reacting when he got ill and had been urinating over the edge of his sandbox. A different sandbox prevented the mess, and love and medication helped a lot, making peeing less painful. But he had those nightmares, waking up in sheer horror, not knowing where he is. It was heartbreaking. 😥😭 If I saw him having a nightmare, I started to speak softly to make him wake up more gently.
