When I lived in So. Illinois, a friend had a 'problem' with beavers building a den under his floating dock on a small lake. Over the course of several days he repeatedly pulled the woody debris out from under the dock, dismantling the beavers' work. Finally he came out one morning to find that they had worked to put an end to his intrusion by building a dam across his path down to the water!

I love these stories. So this guys terminology is wrong, if they're in a lake they not building a dam, it's a lodge! They're building a 'home' 🙂
I would literally get a chair some beers and just chill watching these two entertain them selves.
@nonnasegovia3197
25 күн бұрын
😂😂 they're not entertaining themselves. Beavers are very serious with a mission. They build dams to protect themselves and the soil.
It appears they have a common understanding of the project they are engaged in; the darker one is consistently shifting material, the other one seems to be checking the plans and site boundaries.
I always feel they should be wearing a hard-hat, protective goggles and carrying a spirit level ! 💛

I didn't even know they dug ponds! I thought they only dammed streams and let the area flood. This takes it to a new level. I wonder if they're naturally good at spotting places with poor drainage...and if they'd be willing to accept payment in veggies and wood.

On the other hand beavers don't always know what is best. There was a wonderful bog in my area that was around for a long time but when trapping beavers ended, teycame along and now it is all under water. Sometimes more than one dam will fail at onetime creating flash flooding. Like most things there are positives and negatives.

It depends on where you encounter them. Some don't like them because they tear up the woods just to shut up flowing water and possibly ruin a micro-ecosystem in the area. Humans also have innate knowledge and instincts we just don’t notice. From the moment we’re able to move stuff we’re organizing and building, people like to collect things especially things they may not immediately need, not only that but we want a lot of stuff. The concept of greed is built into us even if we don’t know the word just yet. Kids see stuff they want, they’ll steal, horde and store stuff where they think others won’t take it. Much like how a beaver is compelled to build a dam and if needed an entire pond, people are compelled to take and store things, build to store that stuff and practically sleep on top of it to keep others from wanting to take it.
@cryptbeast3222
Жыл бұрын
They kind of do. Part of it is innate but it's the parents that teach them how to do it properly. They feel the urge to build and dig but it will always be off and structurally incompetent. Beavers learn a lot from their parents. A big reason why human raised beavers don't tend to fit in with truly wild ones.
I think this is wonderful! There must be room in this world for beavers. And who wouldn't like a pond in their backyard! Assuming you have a backyard. Now I know where "busy as beavers" comes from.
