I'm guessing some people would say you're destroying beavers' homes.@@stang10189 They build dams to create ponds and then build their nests in the middle of the ponds (you'll see a big mound in the middle of the pond and they live in that) and the water around their home protects them from predators like coyotes. And over 10,000 years, entire ecosystems of creatures have come to expect and use these small ponds beavers make. So removing a beaver dam is destroying a beaver family's home and an entire ecosystem nature expects around it. They don't build dams just to annoy humans. Now if there's plenty of habitat for beavers and they are ruining our churches, schools, and post offices with too much beaver-wokeness, then who cares if we kill them off. But I'm guessing they are facing ever-shrinking habitat because of humans and humans need nature to survive and we already almost made them extinct a couple hundred years ago... so somebody might come on here and remind us of ^^^^ and how our track record with beavers has already been sh*t and say hey, don't remove beaver dams unless you have a really good reason - they are nature and beavers don't have a beef with you, so don't be a dick to them just because 1 acre out of your 200 acre farm has a pond on it - It's probably good for your farm anyway. Source - environmental, history, science, geography degrees and just facts and science in general. And also wanting a nice planet to live on for as long as we can. with Peace and love and don't at me. Just answering your question. And as proof, I actually really enjoyed watching that thing fail. Satisfying for sure to watch the physics at work. My favorite dam removals use explosives. :)

I have heard conflicting reports where others have said that Beaver dams are actually a benefit to the environment. Particularly due to the way the Beavers slow the flow of water and help it stay in areas longer and to moisten the surrounding landscape. But I guess it depends on where it is and how much rainfall that area gets. The process of slowing the flow of water down is very useful and beneficial in countries that lack adequate rainfall.

  • @asteria4279

There are a benefit in ecology, but definitely considered pests by humans if they are interfering with food production. This situation is very different from a wild area or park, and huge drainage infrastructure indicates they don't suffer from water deficits.

They're a benefit for natural streams because they make ponds that support diverse ecosystems that feed the surrounding area. But given the placement next to the farm fields this is clearly a drainage canal, not a natural stream. So the water it's backing up is not creating a diverse ecosystem, it's just causing problems.

If you want to keep the beavers from coming back or from settling in an area to start with, run a piece of field tile down the channel of the creek, ditch, culvert or stream. For a small ditch a piece of 4 inch slotted tile will work fine. Just lay it in and stake it down every 1 feet or so. When the beavers try to dam the ditch the water just keeps flowing and they can't figure out how to stop it because it flows into the tile along the whole length. Works like a champ. The bigger the waterway the bigger tile you will need.

This reminds me of my elementary school days, when me and my classmates used to spend all our breaks building dams to the small stream near our school, we usually built it as much we could while still letting it flow in the first break and the on the longer lunch break we would block it and allow it to fill until the end of the break or maybe until the last break and then breach it so we could have great deluge downstream. It was great fun, though we did end up eroding the stream badly in parts as the rushing water carried all the nice sand on the bottom with it to the last section near our school. Such good fun.

As an environmental engineer, beaver dams are extremely important in improving water quality by slowing the water down and allowing more water to enter the groundwater system. I do not know the history of this dam or the area but beaver dams are extremely helpful in creating a healthy ecosystem for fish, amphibians, and vegetation.

@@robertlivingston1634 I fully understand that it was damaging farm property but in any other case, these dams help increase groundwater meaning we have more water to use. Without the dams slowing water down, we lose water to evaporation.

Man those beavers are a busy bunch of mammals. I have them damning off my pond and creek. It’s unbelievable how much work they do and how well they do it. After knocking the dam down several times with my tractor they started building it in a different shape so that I can’t reach it with my tractor it’s quite unbelievable how industrious those little monsters are..

Beaver made dams can cause dangerous flooding to peoples homes and lands especially if they have crops on them. It’s best beaver dams aren’t in areas of concern. Keep doing what doing ignore negative comments.. I enjoyed this video

I live near a Beaver pond and it's surprising how much damage can be done when they stop up a creek in the wrong place. The city has to come out every so often to knock down the small dams they build to keep the nearby streets safe. Sometimes the dams are beneficial, sometimes they pose a hazard. Do what you gotta do!

Beavers are second only to humans in how much they change their surrounding environment to suit their needs. No other animal can turn a forest into a swamp, or a field into a lake. Amazing little fur balls.

I'm a fan of the US KZread channel, Post 10. His content is mainly unplugging culverts running under roads, but being in the northeastern US, a lot of those blockages are the results of beavers. Quite a dam you took out there. Loved watching the eventual collapse. Congratulations. Now if you can get rid of those bloody beavers..... Post 10 works with the local wildlife authorities to get the beavers that are the troubles located to other places where they won't be coming back to rebuild their dams.

I did not know they allowed relocations in New England. Down here in VA it is not allowed. All of the suitable habitat is considered to already be filled by beavers, so relocating would just cause fighting and starvation

I very much enjoyed watching you deconstruct the dam. You could learn so much about how it was built. All the while you can imagine the nasty things the beavers were saying about you. Epic was right. When the bubbles started, you knew it would be exciting !

The collapse comes at around 10:40 but if you start the video over and fast forward you can see the dam starts creeping on it's own inexorably towards collapse around the 8 minute mark. You had already broken its back around 3 minutes before it fell.
