Years ago in the Sew News Magazine there was an article on using old neck ties to make a vest. It is great to refashion things.

Cool! Yes, I love to reuse/repurpose. Hate to throw things out if they still have usefullness.

One client I've sewn for has these examples: ruffle trim added to hem of slim trousers, sewn into the side seam of too tight pants to improve fit, pops of color stitched on to outside of a wool jacket, a hand bag she had made w/silk ties with a ⭕ wood handle was later turned into a throw pillow cover (I loved both the purse and pillow result), bottom 8-10 inch section of tie she's had me sewn into left trouser waist band pointing down the leg and tacked down with a decorative button.

Thanks for sharing! I can see where the 1" strips would be handy for Hong Kong binding for exposed seam allowances, or for a flat piping between facing and lining on a blazer. And look fancy to boot! 😁 Sounds like pressing it in half (being slippery AND bias) might be an adventure haha! Happy sewing!

Thanks Lynn! Yes, the hardest part was to keep it from "wiggling" under the ruler, lol!

Thanks for posting this, Angela. My daddy passed in October and I’ve been wondering what to do with his ties to be able to share them with family. I can use them for piping for memory pillows as well as use them for binding for garments.

This was interesting... I have seen ties opened up n sewn together for a boho inspired skirt or vest... I like the idea of getting some silk binding for a project or 2... don't throw the tie interfacing away before checking out Peggy with Silhouette Patterns... she uses that interfacing to add soft structure to sleeve heads in blazers... she has interesting methods in her construction n has quite a few seasons of PBS garment construction shows n markets her own paper pattern designs... full disclosure I own more than a dozen of her patterns... a couple of them are blazers that I want to make but I have not quite slimmed down into her size range yet... thank you for another good video...edited for spelling (my usual... lol)

Oh Cindy! - thank you SO much for the tip on the interfacing. I kept thinking what nice thick material it was but didn't know what I'd use it for. I've pulled it back out of the fabric and thread wastebasket in my sewing room. Hanging onto it! I'll check out Peggy's stuff, thanks for the tip and I hope you have a great week ahead!

Tie interfacing is expensive, worth reusing. I buy silk ties from thrift stores and use the bias binding in sleeveless tops or HongKong finish for jackets.

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely save the interfacing. I like the idea of using it in a jacket.

Thanks for the video Angela! I would never in a million years have thought about getting bias binding from a tie! I so admire people who make their own bias tape for everything. I’ve done it a handful of times but not often enough to keep it fresh in my mind and I have to re-figure out how to do it every time. Making my own bias tape more frequently is a goal of mine.

You are so welcome! While I was finishing up all those ties, I kept thinking what a pain it was. But it really only took me 1-2 hours and afterwards I had a whole pile of bias binding and now I shouldn’t have to purchase any for quite awhile. Hope you’re having a great week!
