Chiang Kai-shek fought for democracy with Sun yat sen before the militaristic Roc and if Sun was alive democracy might well have been restored, but the way china was to fictionalised it was nearly impossible but he came the closest to true democracy in china

One of the biggest mistakes these kinds of video is comparing a historical country to a modern one. Normally the modern one always wins in terms of life quality even it has a worse economic and political system. Should ROC still exist (which it does), it would be a different story

People forget that the Republican era under the KMT only lasted for 21 years immediately follwing imperial rule and a warlord era. People also tend to forget that the Republican era fought against a major foreign military ocupation AND an insurrection during its short time. Despite all of these troubles, the Republican era still had more democracy than the PRC during peacetime. It was also observably becoming more free and democratic toward the later years.

I'm not supporting the PRC even if I prefer it, Mao was an asshole, traitor to Marx, engels and Lenin, like Stalin was, they all respected a twisted form of communist forming a dictatorship of the party elite. Also, Tibet like Hong Kong woudl have been in the same situation I believe under roc, they still had claims on that territories and technically they still do.

For all of you who say that Chiang Kai-Shek and the KMT is less autocratic than the CCP... I'm sorry did I misinterpret the words "Military Dictatorship"?

It seems that many people still don't know why Chiang Kaishek was a dictator and why he did not implement democracy, people nowadays only know the famous side and don't know their backstory. First of all, we must understand that Chiang Kaishek's dictatorship is actually what Sun Yatsen (Founding father of the Republic of China) wanted. Sun proposed three stages of governing a country; "Stratocracy", "People's tutelage" and "Constitutionalism". By stratocracy, the military will govern the country, and they'll use military powers to wipe out warlords and any rebellions. Then is a political/people's tutelage, much like paternalism, the Nationalist government will use authoritarian methods to teach the people what democracy is. Not to mention that there were a lot of illiterates in China at that time, and many people were not very good at writing or reading. Therefore, if democracy is implemented directly, there may still be rebellion. Not to mention that it will only bring laughter to Westerners. A democratic country has so many illiterate and people who do not understand democracy. In fact, this step was still going on in 1936, because of the Japanese invasion and the Communist rebellion. Hell, some warlords under the banner of the Republic of China/Kuomintang still oppose Chiang's rule and support the communist, which will only make the government's work more headache. Then there is Constitutionalism. Chiang Kaishek began to implement the Constitution in 1947 (I believe most of you are not aware of this at all), and was elected as the first president through the 1948 election. I would like to ask, if he had not been elected in 1948, would you still call him a dictator? Don't forget that in the 1930s, China was in the chaotic era thanks to Japanese and communist, if there were no leaders like Chiang Kaishek who can try and solve China's internal and external problems in a dictatorial way, there would be no other person who could do better than him.If democracy were achieved at that time, would the people still want war? If there had been no war, how would China have regained its lost territory? Unless Japan is willing to compromise and return all Chinese territory to them, but obviously they would not do that! Now some of you might have confused..If Chiang Kai-shek was elected as the first president through the constitution in 1947 and 1948, why did he still pursue a dictatorship in Taiwan? Well, it's easy, the Nationalist Government gets kicked out by the communist of the mainland, they lost most of the territories, he had no choice but to perform political/people's tutelage once again. To let the people understand why they oppose the Communist Party and why they want to counterattack the mainland! Although he also killed many innocent people. I'm not supporting war and massacre, but you can also think of him as Chiang Kai-shek's PTSD. After the government lost the mainland, Chiang realized that he was not strong enough on the mainland to taking care of communist and warlords, and so he then chose to run the country in a strongly authoritarian manner in Taiwan. If the Nationalist Government had not retreated to Taiwan, it would not have needed to engage in White Terror.

They thought that of China and the Chinese people had time to transition to a Liberal democracy that it would be far more stable. This democratization probably would have taken place in the had the Japanese not invaded in 1937
