Repotting XXL Orchid with Growth Habit Challenges & Tips to Know | Care Tips incl.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#repotting #tips #tricks
This video tackles the unique challenges of repotting a large Coelogyne Pandurata orchid.
Unusual Growth Habit: Unlike typical sympodial orchids, Coelogyne Pandurata's new growths emerge from the left side of the previous bulb, creating a circling effect.
Repotting Needs: The video showcases repotting due to size constraints and lack of winter light for blooming.
Root Care: Coelogyne Pandurata has fuzzy, terrestrial-like roots. While some dead root removal is necessary, established roots should be preserved for healthy growth.
Leca Media: The video demonstrates repotting in Leca, a lightweight, inorganic media alternative.
Light Requirements: Coelogyne Pandurata thrives in bright, indirect light and struggles to bloom in low winter light.
Blooming: Ideally, flower spikes should appear during new growth. This orchid's lack of blooms indicates insufficient winter light.
Video Takeaways:
Repotting a Coelogyne Pandurata with circling growth requires careful planning for pot size and root placement.
Leca can be a suitable media for this orchid, requiring adjustments for watering frequency compared to traditional potting mixes.
Proper light levels, especially during winter, are crucial for blooming success.
Bonus Tip: The video mentions the Coelogyne Pandurata's unique fragrance, described as resembling dust. #orchideen #orchids #orchidcare #orquideas #orchideenpflege #beginners #leca #coelogyne #tutorial

🌸🥷🏼Director Jose San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, to you, amigo mio!! 🫡Reporting / repotting for you duty 😂 fue muy importante para este orquídea, perro no me gusta el procedimiento de cortarla por mitad! I would have preferred NOT to have to split her, however, ... what to do? This poor thing needs to be in your garden and trust me, if I could, I would send you the whole orchid for you to cultivate on one of your spectacular mounts where it can let the rhizome do what it should be doing. Grow long, extended and bloom ... Sigh! I wish there were no limitations to sending orchids from a private collection to a private collector! Meanwhile, my pandurata and I shall do our best to make sure she stays on the patio, and eventually God willing, things will change and we can get her to bloom again for us 🫶🏼 I hope that your Friday was fabYOUlous, 🌸🥷🏼 Amigo San!! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Your videos are so enjoyable to watch. When you took out the plastic mallet it brought a smile to my face. Learned so much by watching this. I don't have one of these orchids, but your description of growth patterns is helpful. I'm sure that when I repot orchids in the future I will be more mindful of this. Hope you take the time to enjoy your patio, the orchids, birds, et. Stay safe. Looking forward to your next video.

Annavoeg, hi 😍💐 they make me hungry for avocados 😆 so far, the only stress sign I can see some shrivelling of the pseudbulbs that are on the main piece. The back bulbs do not look affected atm. Goes to show just how much energy leaves need and how much they depend on the pseudobulbs for energy. As long as she lives to then be around for when there are better days, that is all I can wish for 🤞🏼 dusty room... very coelogyne. Some are sweeter with a dusty room fragrance, while others, like this one, just smell of a dusty room 😆 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I appreciate your time so very much 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hi Nina, great repot and hope the back bulbs do great as well as the front. I have a Coelogyne pandurata and it’s big! But, it has not bloomed yet. I added a tall wood piece to it so it can climb, but I had to light train it to get close to the wood as it did so. If not, it would be all over the place. I believe mines gets good light in the winter, but if needed, I can place it on one of my top shelf to give it stronger light in the winter. Apartment growing is tight! lol 🤪. Thanks for the amazing content as always. 👏👏👏🥰🌷🌞🌸

Hi Ileana 😍💐 so far, the back bulbs look better than the piece that has the growths in the front. 😅 but, no movement of anything activating in that pot. Vamos a ver! They need a LOT of light, not direct sun, or to the point of burning their leaves, but wow, it is amazing just how much light they need during the winter in order to build up the energy for a new growth to produce a spike. As long as mine lives, I will grow in the hopes of better times and then celebrate seeing this orchid in bloom again 🤞🏼 I know the feeling of growing in a tight space when it comes to this orchid. It takes up quite a radius of floor space where it is during the winter. I have to constantly reach over it to get at other orchids so that they can go outside 🙄 thank YOU so much for watching, lovely lady!! I hope that you are having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

you know what's funny, I've been having to train my Philodendron gloriosum to grow in a circle like that because it wants to grow in a straight line and I would need a pot a mile long to grow it. No chance that new growth will bloom? I don't know what stage they come out on the growth, I just know they typically bloom here in late May/early June typically. My think this year has been Oncidiums blooming off old growths. I don't know what the deal is, but bulbs that should have bloomed a year (or two) ago suddenly throwing up spikes. I'm not complaining about it, it is just odd. Maybe it is because they haven't been fed in 7 months.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Yes, there are some of Phils that will do that and for that reason... never had any of those as house plants. Beautiful plants, but what a nuisance (for me) to grow in pots. The new growth is way past developing a spike. If a spike had formed, the spike would already be showing buds by now. The grow is way too far advanced. If you see the footage of when she spiked for me in 2020, you can see how far along the spike / buds are, whereas the growth still has to leaf out. It is waaaayyyyy down there, while the spike is already budding out. Hakuna matata! One day, I hope to be able to do cartwheels around the patio and celebrate this orchid blooming again. Working hard to make that happen 🤞🏼🙏🏼 thank you so much for watching, my friend! Truly appreciate you 🫶🏼 wishing you a sparkling Saturday ❤️🌸

4:31 🕺 I tried this banging technique with an orange tree recently. Not sure if it helped though since I still had to pull it out. This Coelogyne seems to grow like many Bulbophyllum orchids. 🤔 Howard's Orchids posted a video on how to control the rhizome with a clip today (May 10). 8:40 Interesting point about the fuzzy roots. I repotted two paphs today after I could not get rid of mites. I think they got infested by phals I had in a downstairs bathroom to get the seasonal "cold down." 😣 It was a good chance for me to see the roots and they were new root tips. 😁👍 I was thinking about trying leca with a miltoniopsis. A local garden center has a bunch now but it's the same exact one as the one I have already. 😒

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    2 ай бұрын

Hi Joe 😍💐 banging a pot at the base with a mallet helps to release the root ball to a degree, and yes, pulling out still happens, but without the initial banging there would be so much more ripping and damage. I prefer not to have to use the hammer, however, I do not have the strength in my hands anymore to give a pot this size, with a pot bound orchid in it a squeeze 😆 very good observation, yes, mentioning bulbophyllums as a comparison when it comes to growth habit, is perfect! Thank you for adding that 👍🏼 slipper orchid root tips are a blessing!! As they are slow growers, that translates to their roots as well, so seeing root tips on those is a huge step in the right direction. How about trying leca with a new miltoniopsis, even if you already have that one? Just because, if things were to go wrong, you won't be rescuing an orchid that you do not have. Just a thought. Also, if I may suggest, pick out the small leca from your leca stash. I am sure you know that miltoniopsis love a lot of water, and larger leca will not be as suitable to providing for that much water. When it comes to keeping the roots cool during the warmer months of the year, leca is perfect for miltoniopsis because of the evaporative cooling. Just a thought... if you are going to give it a go, get the same you already have, and in the event that something goes wrong, you will know what to do to revive it based on what your other one likes and is growing well in. Really appreciate you watching this video, Joe!! Thank you so so much 🫶🏼 have a wonderful start to your weekend ❤️🌸

HI Andrea 😍💐 I would leave the roots to dry out for another few days. As your orchids are used to a wet dry cycle, continue waiting until the roots are not as green anymore. Lava rock holds on to the moisture deeper within the pot, so it may take a little longer to dry out. Soon, with the warmer temperatures, you will notice the roots drying out faster and then water according to that. Lovely to hear that you are spending time in the garden. Yes, watching videos outside is impossible. I still think it is crazy, with all the technology we have that they have not developed screens that we can see while outdoors. I do appreciate you watching when you had a moment, thank you so so much for that, lovely lady. Continue enjoying your beautiful garden and the weather.
