    Over the course of many years, I have visit the Tesla electric automaker showrooms, and learned from the Tesla employees that love to share their vision and philosophy of efficient transportation. On every occasion and at many different Tesla showrooms, when I asked how I could learn more about electric vehicles, your KZread channel was the first and only channel mentioned, with great enthusiasm. You are a major influence in educating everyone that wishes to learn more about electric vehicles and batteries. Thank you!

    Thanks Jehu! Just replaced the BMS like you instructed and now it's powering my converted hybrid bike. It's a front wheel hub 500W 36V/48V 22A conversion kit. I weigh 175 lb and the controller limits me to 20mph. Did a full test yesterday and got 20 miles range with small hills in Austin, TX. I started with 42V and then it shut off at 32V. At $72 with shipping, what a great value. Wish I could justify buying 4X or even 6X right now.

    Very tempted to take this approach. Little puzzled with this method being that if not testing and labeling each cell. Like this approach for being cheaper. And easier. No special equipment to buy. Such as a 5x kit or a spot welder.

    I was able to get the BMS which comes with the batteries to work with some reverse engineering! Edit: Tutorial here kzread.info/dash/bejne/c52Lmcd6kdLQZcY.html Tl;dr you need to short pin 3 of the S50085 switch chip to ground with a ~1k resistor to enable the output. The cell balancing and protections seem to be always on from my testing, but I will do more research to see if there is a software solution instead of adding a resistor. The BMS looks really well built and has triple redundant current sensing and CAN bus output (potentially allowing you to track cycles, cell voltages, and actual pack capacity etc) and many times redundant low battery protection. The switch this resistor bypasses is separate, so I think this is a safe fix and will not disable protections, so I will use it for now but no guarantees.

    It looks like the BMS actually fully turns on and sometimes allows charge and discharge if you connect LINK_A and LINK_B pins on the small wire headers at the end of the BMS board with no other modifications. When you do this, it also outputs messages over CAN which I haven't been able to decipher quite yet.

  • @dieselphiend
    @dieselphiend4 жыл бұрын

    You can simply wire the BMS to manage charge only- bypass it. They are nothing but power hogs anyhow. They're useless. At best, you need a balancing circuit.. I rode 20 miles on my electric skateboard with no BMS a couple of weeks ago, and I came home, and manually measured the cells. Each Samsung 40T was exactly 3.51 volts, which if I'm not mistaken, is the the same storage voltage they set at the factory. Not even 1/100th of a volt of deviation in the cells. That's not to say cells can't become out of balance, but if you use the newest and the best cells available, and you don't directly solder to your batteries- you can run them without a BMS so long as you periodically check and make sure there's 0 deviation. The conditions for charging things like electric skateboard batteries are less than ideal. Especially when you exceed 6s- there's just no external lithium charger/balancers on the market that do above 6s. It would be ideal to simply have a waterproof balance lead terminal/connector on the side of your battery compartment you could just plug into something like an IMAX B6 (B12, lol) that accepted 12S. There's more room for growth in the light electric vehicle sector than just about any other I can currently think of. People are taking these things for granted. I have a freaking skateboard I can pick up with one arm, and carry it in my house that can literally carry me 25 miles on a single charge. That's disruptive technology.
