I’m always impressed by how many skills you have and how many machines you use for your work 👍👏
Absolutely amazing Dan! I was going to wait until they turned up in Aus before I watched the video! I just couldn’t wait though! I am absolutely stoked with the finished outcome on video! Can’t wait to see what they are like in person! Cheers and thanks for the amazing job and time recording! Cris!

@@ivanhoe6366 got loads mate but I have no idea how good they are and I have seen some absolutely horrendous cobbler work over here as well. At least having watched Dan for ages I know he actually does a good job and uses premium stuff. I probably went a bit mental with these but it’s the start of the handmade journey for me.

I was in Oz in July (ballarat) and picked up a pair of these in brown at the Salvos virtually brand new for 10 dollars, didn't realise at the time until I Googled them what an absolute result that was. I think aswel it's probably the only time I've found footwear in a charity shop thats actually fit me 😄
You always leave the soles prettier than the upper part. The soles are so pretty that I would be sad to wear them and get them dirty.💯🔥 You are a fantastic artist! 🐐👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
I appreciate you keeping some of the out takes in the video. It makes it feel so homely and fun.
Aussie first time poster, long time watcher - I loved you singing Acca Dacca while working on the boots we all were down here. Legend mate :)
I've never felt so nervous watching a video about shoes. Your skill is impressive. Placing that elastic with one shot to do it right had me nervous AF. Thanks for the content this week.
And now we have a luvverly tight gusset, well done Dan...great job as always
I love the details and finish on these boots. A huge improvement in the original. Every time I see the heel press being used, I can't help but think of the scene in Return of the Jedi at Jabba's palace. Reminds me so much of the droid torture device.
Dan... Brilliant workmanship... Cheers!
great work, love transformation , i just really like watching your channel, you make it look so simple and explain things so even i can understand it and that's saying something , well done 👍👍
You rock Dan - thanks for the great video!
You can buy rolls of elastic which are sized to the shape required. RW Williams elastic is black on one side and brown on the other. The brown boots have brown on the outside and black on the inside, the black boots simply reverse the colours. This of course enables a single roll of elastic to do both boot colours. A genuine RM Williams repair will set you back AU$150. I buy the elastic myself and take it to a shoe repairer in Thailand or the Philippines when I'm on holiday.
Great job man! A little tip I use to get contact cemented pieces into tight spots and all aligned before sticking them together is simply using a piece of waxed bakery paper! You can see through it enough to line your parts up, it doesn't stick to the glue, and you can just slide it out slowly once your pieces are aligned! Hope it help!
Didn't you cut the new panels the same size as the stretched panels and end up with the same fit? And isn't that stich across the top a strait stich that cant stretch at all?

Wonderful video. Watched both videos, glad to see the whole boot finished up. Looks superb. And if I’m not mistaken is that volbeat playing, with you humming along.
Just made them better than new. Great job mate
WOW!, Just saw your work of art, absolutely amazing, just picked up my first pair of RM Williams boots ever, $675 worth every penny! 🇦🇺 🪃
Nice to see a craftsman enjoying his work 😀🥾👟👞👍👍
This is one of those rare channels that I enjoy watching to the end and at normal speed, which is saying something cause I’m sure I have ADHD. Excellent content, thanks Dan.
I was just having a convo with my mate about this exact situation! Sending over to him to show him now!
Dan. I'm genuinely curious as to how you got to where you are in shoe repair. Did you go to some sort of cobbler school or were you mentored by someone as an apprentice for awhile? Did you open your own store in Tring or did you buy someone out? I'd love to know how you got started in this line of work. Also, your wealth of knowledge down to the details is amazing.

Hi Dan. I'm really pleased with myself. I made the jump from the half sole video to this one, and I cleared the entire gap between the two! I'm bushed. Time for a whiskey and cola.
Awesome job.
I thought we just said the gusset was stretched out and baggy, why would we make the new one the same size? Surely it should be smaller.

Brilliant!!!
Terrific! Need this done to my 5-year-old Blundstones … at least I have an idea of what needs to be done!
Good job
They are great boots. I've got a pair that I wore almost every day on our farm. In the stockyards and all. Probably nearly 30 years old. Given they are a bit battered and since we sold the farm 10 years ago, they haven't seen as much use since then. The elastics have been replaced a few times and re-soled. They could last a lifetime with normal use.
Soo cooooolll👏🏼✌🏻
You are a skilled worker son.
Welcome back
This is strangely relaxing....

Fantastic repair Dan, so elaborate! Good job as usually!! The 'small' snack in the other video was funny😝 P.S: I love your cover up tattoo💀👌🏻
06:14 I have to tell you that you have a really cute and natural laugh. Your work is always exceptionally good. Very talented.
I love your work, Dan. Been a long time subscriber for a couple years now. There was something I noticed with the gusset replacement that I wouldn’t have noticed had I not bought a new pair of RMs a month ago: it seems the measurements you took for the making of the new gussets didn’t account for the stretch in the old ones. The replacements are noticeably wider than stock. That’s it. Just my 2¢. Love your work.

All cobblers have strengths and weaknesses .
Not seen that before - looks really awkward but what a smashing result.
Amazing job, but I'm thinking you should have made those elastic replacements a little shorter on the upper side, since they were streched by use, that way you can fix all the cracks and deformations on the front of the shoe.
You can actually buy rolls of elastic gusset material that’s black on one side & brown on the other side, like all the Oz boot makers use. Because old gussets stretch over time, it’s good to go into a RM Williams store & surreptitiously measure the width of the gussets for each size of boot & keep a catalogue in a note book. For example 10.5 boots have gussets about 60mm on the outside & about 65mm on the inside. Most shoe repairers seem to just measure them off the old ones & they end up way to wide because the old ones have stretched, so they end up too loose after the repair. Of course they vary for different styles, but it gives one a general guide.

I was thinking the same thing… it’s standard boot elastic here!
First thing hit the like then watch and enjoy.
The R.M Williams factory is just down the road from where I live in Adelaide. After watching your last video I looked into buying some... 🤯 I had no idea they were $650... $30 bucks from an op shop is a bargain!!
I’d be absolutely up for a multiple episode series of you making a pair of Tring Luxury dress shoes from scratch. You could keep them or do an auction to raise money for the channel.

Fantastic video and always entertained by your skills. One question about the gusset, it looks a little large/wide compared to a new boot. They’re supposed to be tight when putting on. It maybe the style of boot?
With the stitching on the upper edge, doesn't it stop the elastic from stretching?
@Punchgirl4
Жыл бұрын
That was exactly the point I was coming here to make. Unless it was elastic thread or a zig zag stitch, the stitching on the top edge would prevent the elastic from stretching, defeating its purpose. Great repair apart from that.
Awesome
That looked tuff
Hi Dan. As always a top job. I was really surprised the effort you went to getting brown elastic on the inside. I've got a few pairs of both chestnut and black RMs. They use the same elastic in both, so the black ones are brown on the inside and chestnut black on the inside. I'd always assumed this allows them to use a single roll of elastic and it doesn't matter which boots type, the elastic with go one way or the other. Was the two layers simply for the aesthetics or will the two layer take longer to stretch?
Are you listening to Volbeat? incredible band and incredible job Dan!!!
I love the Costa product placement 😂 I hope they paid you!
Your repair skills are top notch. I wonder if you could make a pair of shoes from scratch? Idea for future video?
Coloured elastics options would be great
I’ve got a lot of admiration for artisanal restoration like this. May I ask purely out of interest please, how long did this whole job take you and what was your charge for it?
Great job Dan. How much in total was the resoling and the new gussets? I’ve a few pairs that need some TLC.
Lol gussets… Fair play though pal, I love your channel
Hey man, love the vids. RM actually doing a leather stretch as well to get the boot back to factory shape, is this something a shop like yours can do or really only the manufacturer?
Redstich to match sole would be awesome
i wish i had that stitching machine at work XD
$27!!! great find.
Great that's the shot the K29 in action. What number is that one, looks like a low number.

Excellent job on the soles! Commendable. Should you have allowed for stretching (5mm?) when cutting new elastics from the originals they look a bit big. Been wearing RMs since I was a teenager and the elastics always go prematurely. They should find a more resistant to stretching material.
That is so easy to do
Surely if the new gussets are measured against the stretched old ones they would be too loose?

If you have ever had a new pair of RM boots you would know how snug that elastic should be. I just pulled a new pair on (pregnant feet needed a new size) and the elastic is not wider at the top. It’s really snug.

I’ve done hundreds of them. 68 to 70 mm is the gap. There is a proper black/brown elastic for RM,s that is the right thickness for black or brown boots without having to spend time making them. It did look bigger than 70 mm. But good trades man all the same.
