Replacing diesel with HVO - what's that all about?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the ongoing struggle to wean the globe from its addiction to fossil fuels, there are many alternative solutions to be found. In an ideal world, everyone would switch to zero-emissions fuel immediately, but that's just not practical. Not everyone is ready to go electric yet and there will be petrol and diesel cars on the road for quite some time to come. Renewable petrol is being researched and developed to keep sports cars and classic models running without the need to switch to electrification, but what about a renewable diesel alternative? That's where HVO comes in. It's Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and in this video we explain what it's all about.
This video was produced as part of a commercial partnership between CompleteCar.ie and Skoda.

This makes so much sense. I see that Dublin port are using it and Dublin airport heavier vehicles. The short sightedness of dublin bus investing in those electric busses is incredible. Why not have all busses, commercial vehicles, haulage incentivized to make the switch. If the greens truly wanted to make an immediate impact this is what they should be campaigning for. Ireland wont have the electric infrastructure to support all electric for decades and thats not to mention how questionable the benefits of EV's are to our environment when considering total cost of ownership and raw materials its take to get on on the road (considering Toyota's 1:6:90 rule)

No, this is quite a lot more advanced than the old used-vegetable-oil-based fuels of yesteryear.

They have to make HVO widely available, I filled up this morning first time ever and there is defo better acceleration plus engine seems to be running smoother IMHO.

@@Dantotherivertosilenceme From our news story on the website (www.completecar.ie): "At the moment, you can buy HVO fuel from Certa forecourts in Liffey Valley in Dublin, Lee Tunnel in Cork and Trim in Meath, but the plan is to have seven more HVO forecourts ready by the end of this year and to eventually have all 41 of Certa's nationwide locations ready to pump HVO fuel." ^ Shane

That is a factor, and a reduction in 'cleaner' fuels could encourage more use

It varies by supplier and station around the country, as with diesel. HVO is a little more expensive usually, but Certa is actually selling it at the same price as regular diesel for now.

It's far more efficient on the farming side of things to produce bio ethanol.

When people put "efficient" and "farming" together what they neglect to say is milking it absolutely dry and chopping it down to an inch of its life. But yeah, there's an awful lot of slurry waste that would be better used as Methane and HVO fuel. Unfortunately, there's not nearly enough animal waste or cooking oil waste in Ireland to replace a fraction of diesel consumption. They import it in from Palm oil plantations

@@toyotaprius79 To be clear, I would never suggest that biofuels make any kind of sense as fuels for vehicles. Biofuels just seem insane to me, I was only pointing out yet another way in which diesels are inferior to gasoline engines.

@@CompletecarIe I don't see why we need to explore something when it's already known to be fraught with problems.
