Replacing broken front coil springs and wheel alignment. A step by step guide. Volvo XC60 2012

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My wife has complained about a noise coming from the left front of her Volvo XC60 2012, upon examination i found the coil spring to have snapped.
I changed that and i also got a big surprise when changing the right hand side.

    It's isn't too difficult but I would highly recommend some proper spring compressors as the springs are quite beefy and have a lot of power in them when compressed

    Can't really say we measured it we only realised it was broken when my wife heard a noise from the front wheel. She did say when she drove it afterwards that it was a big difference but I'm sure that's not that helpfull 🤣🤣. I've been working on the volvo again recently so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss that video

    Wheel aligner here. As an owner of a 2012 S60T6 this vid on taking the strut apart is very helpful. I'll be swapping shocks and strut tops soon so it's very handy. A few corrections though. Degree is divided into 60 minutes, literally it emulates the clock. And every minute is divided into 60 seconds. So, no, there are no "hundreds" :) Positive toe is also known as toe-in, so when it's say +1degree 33, means wheel is pointing in by one and a half degrees. Negative Toe is known as Toe-out is. Total toe as a sum, is an indicator of whether the thrust that these settings produce is perfectly straight forward. Basically you want them to be identical on both sides. However it IS possible to counter uneven camber with a little uneven toe-in to keep the car driving straight while keeping tyre wear flat across.

    Question for a wheel aligner: the tolerance on the toe is +/- 3 mins or +/- one tenth of a degree, can you actually feel the effect of that size of error on how the car steers? Other videos show the toe varying as much as this when someone sits in the car.

  • @mike_themechanic

    @mike_themechanic

    No you probably can't feel it but your tyres will and they will wear quicker over time

    @@mike_themechanic the specified toe (not tolerance) is 6 minutes or one tenth of a degree. The toe is set to change the handling isn’t it? Amazing that you can even feel it. Would be interesting to do some experiments but public roads aren’t the place are they?

    I'm not sure as it's my wife's car but she did say afterwards that it was higher 😂. I think when the first spring broke she heard the noise and upon inspection I found the broken spring so I don't think she had driven around with it for too long

    @@mike_themechanic I’ve got problems with my XC60 pulling to the left. I wondered if it was a mismatched spring as one has been changed. The alignment is spot on. It doesn’t look like the handling can be upset too much by broken springs if it has been driven like this for a while 😂

    @julianporter5 have you checked the brakes. One side could be sticking and causing the car to pull to one side?

    These cars were built under Ford ownership, quality suffered as a result, rust is more prevalent than previous generation Volvo's, I have a Volvo C70 2011, was shocked by the amount of rust for a Volvo, my previous car was a Volvo V70 P2, when I sold it at 18 years old no rust at all on the underside or components !

    Up here in the North of Sweden cars suffer less with rust due to less usage of salt during winter. The fact these springs broke is probably due to the very cold temperatures of winter making the metal brittle.

    @mike_themechanic yeah I reckon I have a broken spring too now, it goes Donk donk as I turn the wheel as rides like crap now. I changed my strut top mounts in the height of winter last year, took a very long time, will definitely invest in that spring compressor tool you have I just have the threaded claw type.

    Based on what did you align the macpherson at the top, after changing the spring? I am currently changing the macphersons on my XC60 front suspension, and there is no clear indication how they should be aligned before being tightened and I can not find this anywhere on the internet... its crazy... any info would be of help, thanks!

    The spring fits in the cup in only one way and the top mount has three or 4 bolts I can't remember how many. The top mount shouldn't matter or if it does then the bolts will only fit in a certain patten. With it being a mcpherson the top mount should be the bearing and shouldn't matter in which position it is re fitted

  • @caska1313

    @caska1313

    @@mike_themechanic It is 3 bolts, and they do have a specific position, that can not be mistaken, but in that same part, its bottom half rotates and can be rotated to adjust how it fits on the spring of the strut. That bottom part is uneven on each side of its circle, making it have a different effect and tilt for the entire front struts. And I do not know, or at least there is no clear indication how they should be rotated/placed on top of the spring correctly as that, I feel, will affect the stability of the car, especially when cornering
