Replacing a Sliding Screen Door Roller

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video demonstrates a quick and easy way to remove and re-install one of PRIME-LINE's B-515 sliding screen door rollers.
Something we didn't go over in the video was the fact that weather, old oil/grease and dirt, combined with rusty or corroded parts can make this job more difficult.
If you have a different style of roller you need help with, drop us a note here and we'll see about uploading a video to help you out.

A few more tips. 1 wiggle the roller tongs back and forth slightly when close to when they are spreading. 2 where the tip of the Phillips screwdriver determines your leverage point. You need that leverage and in some spots you just don't get it. 3. I found that I got it in on my second roller a bit faster when I had aligned to one side of the prong and not in the center. You are lifting in a bit of an arc so the center point will miss when rotated. 4. A second regular screwdriver may help in getting the Phillips in position. Great video. I struggled for an hour before I found this video. In 15 minutes I was then done. Most of these DIY videos don't have the video skills or equipment to show every detail. The key like he said is the 3/16" Phillips. I did not use string/wire because I did not have any handy.

Seduced by the smooth and easy video, I went to Home Depot to get the parts I needed. My screen door is about 9 years old, so it had seen better days, is bent in parts and is no longer in its prime. To start with I found the two old rollers that needed replacement extremely hard to extract. The most difficult portion of the job however was to replace the new rollers. It took me a good 30 minutes plus some immense grief to get the job done. There's definitely room for improvement (video/product)

Finally got the 6th wheel installed!!! At this point I was considering getting the door replaced. The previous five plastic wheels popped out during my attempts to follow the above video, and since it is a two part plastic assembly - the wheel and the central point never flew in the same direction, and I lost all the small central parts. So I decided to remove my last remaining plastic wheel out of the assembly - and kept both the central and the outer plastic parts. I then popped in just the empty aluminum holder into place without any problems, and then with about 5 minute effort was able to pop in the 2 piece plastic wheel. Used the same #3 screwdriver that is recommended in the video. Only took about a month and three trips to the hardware stores (parts are hard to locate) - that I was able to accomplish the task.

What worked best for me is to get a flat screw driver that is wide enough to pry open the replacement wheel bracket enough to get around the post well inside the door. Once you line up the hole on the replacement wheel bracket with the post you will need to remove the flat screen driver so that it can snap into place. It's difficult to do but I finally got it.

While I really appreciate such a quality video on this topic, I am still having trouble with this application. Just to clarify, I am replacing the rollers in a screened slider that is approximately 8 years old, but the existing and new rollers (#B515) are an exact match. The trouble I am having is when installing the new roller, just before it seems the roller bracket will snap into position, the plastic wheel/axle pops out of the bracket. Am I missing something here? Thank you

A very good instructional video. I will add that I found it hugely helpful to run a piece of fishing line or thin wire (my wife has this stuff called "floral wire") around the new wheel assembly behind where it clips to the pins in the door frame. That way, if you have to move the screwdriver to get more leverage, or even reposition the whole assembly ever so slightly for it to line up properly, you can keep it in position instead of having it slip off the pins entirely.

The adjustment screw is used to raise or lower the roller and hence the door so the door sits evenly on the track and rolls smoothly. If it's too high, it (the screen) can bind at the top. If it's too low the screen frame can drag on the track.

I have to say, yes this is extremely hard. There are no perfect replacements that home depot carries that exactly match original hardware, so this is the closest. If I hadn't seen your video, I think I would have shot myself in the head after the # of times I tried this. So it really helped. I replaced orig. hardware with both the B-515 and the B-736. The difference betw. them and the orig. hardware was that the orig. hardware had a hook rather than the grabby thing, and it had a rounded spring rather than an L-shaped one. This is what I found: First step of loosening the tension screw is extremely important! Without doing that, you're going to have difficulty. Next, to line up the grabby thing, you have to find just the right sweet spot vis-a-vis those nubby things. It's not directly under, as one person here noted, because when you pivot the wheel from behind, it's going to change that angle. Also, you have to use a really narrow phillips head screw driver, and a long one I found out, to get the right arc and not break the nylon wheel. (I broke one last time I tried this months ago - that time I gave up.) After they were installed, neither model, B-515 nor B-736, provided the spring-type tension that the orig. hardware had. I could get them in (aargh! never want to do it again!) but no matter the tension screw's position, there is now no "bounce" which we had with original hardware. All I know is our door is now working, but it wasn't easy. I believe our door mfr is Jeld Wenn; it's the one with the blinds inside the glass.

The video helped me a lot but what I discovered was that every time I tried to force the spring clip in, the roller would pop out. What I did was remove the plastic roller AND small plastic axle, then put in the spring clip. Once I had the metal clip in I just rotated the clip down and pushed the roller and axle unit in. I had to spread the sides of the clip but it was much easier than trying to force the complete unit in. You should show this as an alternative to forcing it in as one unit. But as I said, the video did show the basic replacement so I thank you for that.

Like many others mention, this is not an easy task. I purchased the metal rollers, and I actually broke the first one. It is very difficult to manuever the assembly so that you can get the prongs to open enough to go over the post. Using the proper sized Phillip screwdriver helps. I also sprayed a small amount of WD-40 on the prongs so that they could slide over the post easier. It finally snapped into place....not because of my skills....just luck after an hour (or more) of trying!

I'm surprised I got a response from PrimeLine. I finally got the rollers replaced. Took me an extra 15 minutes with the first one, but then it took me about 6 minutes for the next one. I had to use needle nose pliers and bend the tabs open to make the space between the tabs bigger. The video doesn't show this, but I would love to see the guy take off a worn out and rusty roller like the one I had and replace it with a new one. The space between the tabs is remarkably different from old to new.

So this is the real deal. After nearly 4 + hours of frustration. Yes the old rollers come out easy, but getting the new ones in are extremely difficult. I bought 2 sets of nylon rollers and all I ended up doing was breaking the rollers off trying to slide it into place. At my wits end I called to have someone fix it and was told they don't do this and it would cost $200 plus for a new screen door. This was by a company and a handyman in the area I live. They would not just replace the rollers. Last ditch effort I went to Home Deport and purchased rollers with a steel roller. I was done in 20min. The steel gave you the strength you needed to slide it into place. They were $10 for 2 so $20 total. Don't waste your time with the cheap nylon.

I replaced mine today (also replaced the plastic corner brackets with metal versions because the little socket on one broke off long before I could ever get the two wheel parts spread apart and the wheel removed 😞). Of note: The assembly was quite a bit wider than the old one I replaced and as a result it was almost impossible to fit the new wheel assembly into the allotted space. Is this a common issue among the manufacturers to vary the wheel carrier width by (relatively) significant amounts?

My wheel is rusted and filled with dirt, and a really pissed off black spider came out when I started getting some of the dirt out. Looks like my search for how to remove the adjuster continues. If I ever get my roller out, I will spray ample grease in there to avoid the rust next time.

Using the technique here, the old roller comes out easily. However, it takes so much pressure to put the new one in that the nylon wheel pops out of the metal frame. After about three of four times, I finally left the wheel out, put the metal frame in, and, then, put the wheel back in after the frame was already installed. Overall, I would give this an eight on the frustration level. It would have been well worth it to just buy a new screen door.

Backing off, or Unscrewing. It takes the tension off of the spring loaded roller and makes installing the new one easier. After you install the door back in the frame you would then re-adjust the roller with the screw so that the door rolls smoothly and doesn't fall out of the track at the top of the door.

I'm wondering if the rollers I bought are too small. The roller sits on top of the rail - it doesn't straddle the rail. Which is correct?

How do I replace the plastic corner part that has the tabs? My wrecking ball son blitzed into the screen door and it broke the bottom plastic tabs off the corner component as the door derailed from brute force of an 8 year old's head smashing into the screen.

The metal is so bent inside I can't get out off the prongs. No matter how i pry them apart, no deal. Can I just break it out so I can replace the new one? I think it's really stuck

@PrimeLineHowTo The guy on the video used the same roller he took off. It obviously has a little more give compared to a new one. When I used a brand new out of the box roller, the tabs wouldn't open up at all. The space between is too small to allow the hinge to fit, let alone open up the tabs. The lesson in all of this is that the video needs more detailed instructions. I'm not kidding, I was moments away from having to pay for a new screen or have some professional replace the rollers.

Usually that would be part of the corner that holds the door frame together. Sometimes the corners are plastic. The corner we sell is cast metal. You can take a look at the line drawing and see if it's the same as yours. There's an enlarged circle showing where the tabs are in the drawing. www.primeline.net/b-569-corner-insert

I have a roller that is rusted and frozen. No help available to me. Do you know if they do these repairs at home depot; or what kind of business would I look for to help with this? Thank you for the video!

Look online for a local glass and screen shop. They should be able to remove the roller, and help identify a replacement for you.

i have watched this video over and over about 5 times and i still can't figure out how the hell to get the new roller in...it is not nearly as easy as this makes it seem.

I got it in and rolled it up to the two little knobs inside my screen but the new clamps absolutely will not clamp on to the two metal knobs in the screen. I kind of think the holes on the clamps are not large enough for the knobs. I've been at it for an hour and a half--so frustrating!

I appreciate the instructional, but can't a design be created where the Rube Goldberg spring clip arrangement is changed out for a simple screw on either side of the roller assembly making a change-out easier? I'm having quite a time with the opening of the clips, then installing the new roller assy...

"......can't a design be created where the Rube Goldberg spring clip arrangement is changed out......." Short answer, Yes. Long answer, this is a direct replacement roller for a system that we didn't design. There are hundreds of different screen door roller systems in use. Each inventor, I'm sure thinks his/her version is the best and all the others are terrible. The roller system in question has been around 40+ years. It just so happens that this is the system that you have on your door. One of our guys in Customer Service has some very detailed photos that show exactly what you're dealing with. If you'd like him to e-mail them to you, send an e-mail to info@primeline.net and ask for B-515 installation photos.

I appreciate the reply and explanation; thanks! I also understand it's a patent problem where everyone has their own design.

Jeff DeGross yes it is called a 'corner' and can only be replaced by removing the screen.

The screen has to be removed from the door and then the frame can be seperated into 4 pieces to get the inside corner pieces out. The screw you are referring to is just an adjustment.
