Replacing a Fuel Pump on the '61 Apache

Did a dump run and it left me stranded - what a load of rubbish!

I’m glad it worked out for you and didn’t burn down. That would have been catastrophic. I really like your build and I’m using some of your ideas on a 67 C-10 build. I also will be going the in tank route as it is said to be better in the long run maybe not easier but anyway keep up those great videos and I’ll keep watching and learning. 👍🏾

Nice callout to Fitzee. She looks pretty maintainable to me, fuel tanks are just always negative fun time.

I certainly learn a lot from Fitzee. Nice catch! You get an "A"!

I have two restomods with intank walbro pumps. Both have stranded me on the side of the road. Next one will be an external pump.

I put a Walbro in my 85 GMC LQ4 swap. I don't have enough miles on it, but man, I'm not looking forward to dropping that tank.

💕 me that truck! I just changed my fuel tank, pump, and filler neck and the aftermarket filler doesn't match the original cap. Now I can't find a cap that doesn't leak so I have evap codes. ARGH!!

I'm glad you caught that before it destroyed your truck sir! I'm getting ready to put the same engine and trans(mission) in my 63 c10, turbo and all. I have concerns about the fuel (e85 mostly) eating the insulation around the wires in the tank. Any tips, tricks, or insights would be welcome! Thank you for your videos especially the rollerizing of the 4l80e! Tremendous help!

If all else failed, you could go back and watch the video of how you put it together! Nice that you have that documented. It seems to me though, that back when fuel pumps were mechanical and lived on the side of the engine block, they were much easier to service. I know modern, fuel injected engines need high pressure fuel to keep them running but why couldn't the pump be somewhere more convenient than in the fuel tank itself? Maybe someone already did that or maybe there is a good reason for having the pump in the tank, I don't know. Seems like another case of easy to engineer and build but difficult to service.

When you don't provide an access panel above the tank, you can at least lengthen your fuel lines and wiring so that you can simply drop the tank right down as the first step and then deal with unhooking everything afterwards.

I had thought of that, but I used teflon-lined braided hoses for the whole shebang, and they don't exactly flex well.

Is that a ford tank and fuel sender? It looks like a ford connector. They seem to be made of the worst materials and either break on disassembly, disintegrate with time, or melt and try to burn your car down. I use GM style metripac connectors for stuff like that.

S10 Blazer tank and pickup. I used the wires that came with it, and the gray electrical connector that came with the Walbro pump. The only Ford parts I used were the 9" axle and the fox-budy steering rack. And the paint.

I recently had to mess with a fuel pump in my opel omega b, never liked in tank fuel pumps, but it is what it is, in this video i noticed the fuel in tank assy, the pump pickup screen is quite large, and the return line is in the same assembly, what happens with the fuel in your tank if vehicle going around a corner? Fuel under centrifugal force moves away from centre of the tank, in my opel omega b, the fuel return line goes to the bottom of the cup assembly which the fuel pump and pickup sits in, the return line at bottom/ lowest point in tank has a nozzle, creating a jet of fuel , sending the stream of fuel thru fuel at bottom of tank and spraying into this cup assy, tested it on the bench with water, seems this jetting action acts as a suction to pull fuel from bottom of tank into this cup keeping it filled and fuel pump with pickup screen inside this cup being completely immersed in fuel, thats from the factory, i'm thinking, that is for when cornering to prevent fuel starvation and to cool the fuel pump....

Its probably not going to happen again, but a possible "serviceability" approach could be an access panel in the floor of the bed?

Not at all a look I was after. A smarter cookie would have kept the in-cab tank and used an external pump, but not me.

I have a flap that was cut in the bed of my gmt400,dirt goes though and sits on top of the tank, I hate it. Now from the incredibly slow locost project. I have a NOS 240 external fuel pump that I was going to regulate down for motorcycle carbs and deregulate for moto injection later. But that's stalled while I work on truck restoration.

You got a link to the fender fuel filler you used? Looks nice. I can't find a way to make mine look good. Thanks.

It's an original cab-mounted fuel filler and o-ring. I cut/shaped/flanged the hole to replicate the opening in the cab.

Is it not a possibility to get at it through the top of your box by lifting one or two of your bed planks?

  • @GregWellwood

Some of the nuts that hold the bed planks are above the tank, so, no.
