    Very good video and narration. Most of the Explorer CV replacement videos I've seen were from shops with car lifts and special tools, etc. It was nice to see one for most of us... who do this type of repair on our driveway with just a car jack. Thanks!

    Thank you very much for the great feedback , hope all goes smoothly. The best way is to have a drain pan ready to catch the tran fluid , pour it up in a jug , and put the same amount of clean tran fluid back. It is rather difficult to add fluid without removing the air box. Thanks for watching

    @@s33therfan Thank you. I'll be doing the passenger side. Have you done the passenger side? I'm guessing it will be the same steps. Basically, if I shift from drive to reverse and vise-versa, the SUV moves a little and I hear the balls bouncing off each other. Or I hit a pothole, I hear the clicking. Replacing the CV Axle is the right direction? Driver side Duralast cost $199.

    Nice method for removing the axle nut. I'm planning to replace the wheel hub assembly on a 2016 Explorer and have watched videos of other struggling with this and using some creative (somewhat sketchy) methods with using a pry bar/2x6, etc. This seems much easier/safer. Thanks for the tip.

    The dipstick/fill cap is hidden. You will need to remove the air box and the intake duct . I usually remove it all as a unit. Try to put back what you lost first then drive and check. The bad thing about the design is it requires driving and checking while removing and replacing the air box etc. Anyways drive the vehicle for a bit after adding fluid . Park it on a level surface and check it . It really needs to be running to be accurate . I usually leave the maf connected and check it with the air box out of the way. However if its been driven and warm the fluid level should be pretty accurate. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

    Question. I have a 2015 explorer. I was doing the control arm and the ball joint would not go in at all onto that knuckle assembly. I decided to remove the shock assembly and while I was at it replaced the cv axle. Well I can only get the bottom bolt for the shock assembly. I’ve tried everything. Not sure what the heck is going on. My brand new ball joint I know it supposed to be tight but wow. Not sure if that is why. I installed the cv axle and everything clicked and got the other side by the knuckle assembly to go in but the new cv axle boot closer to the transmission seems twisted.

  • @s33therfan

    @s33therfan

    If you push in on the strut , usually that bolt will slide in easily. As far as the ball joint , it needs to line up very straight to get it started. I also like to use a lot of white lithium pb blaster. Another issue that can occur is the cv joint may pop out if under stress. If the boot is twisted I would check and make sure it is popped into place. If it pops out , it is impossible usually to install the ball joint. The other problem , is sometimes they are hard to pop back in to place and need the boot removed to do so. Hope this can help and thank you for the feedback.

    @@s33therfan Thanks for the response. I do appreciate it. When I was having such a hard time getting the ball joint, I decided to remove the two bolts holding the strut mount to help me align the ball joint. Once I did that it went in easy. The issue has been with the cv axle because my sway bar link bushing is bad and it was making the strut mount face towards the back. So when I installed the new cv axle I suppose from trying to fight with the strut mount the new cv axle could have popped out. I ended up having to cut the sway bar link so I could have the strut mount facing straight. I figured once I get everything lined up I was going to replace the sway bar link. Those links bushings were so bad that they were getting stuck one way.

Wasnt ready for it lol id say almost half a quart but not exactly sure. & i was having a hell of a time trying to get new axle in.. Hitting with rubber hammer wasnt working but was able to push it back in. Did you have to add any fluid after job was done?

    Is there an easy way to separate the hub assembly from what it's bolted to?

  • @s33therfan

    @s33therfan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sometimes you can get to the bolts from behind the knuckl, without removing the cv axle if you are careful and remove the hub assembly. The only other way would be to remove the entire knuckle and then take the hub assembly out. I have done it both ways depending on the circumstance. Thanks for the feedback.

    I have not had any issues like that , and would think the cv replacements were possibly bad out of the box. There is definitely a problem and I would have the suspension inspected. The only install error would be failing to seat it all the way or popping it out of its socket ( both seem unlikely). Maybe someone else could chime in on this. Wish I could be more help. Thank you for watching.
