Signs of a CV Axle Failure!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What are some of the signs of a CV Axle failure? I've got a 2002 Monte Carlo SS that needed the drivers side from wheel bearing and CV axle replaced. This one was starting to get a clattery noise while turning into a parking spot, there was some vibration that could be felt in the steering wheel at speed and there was grease buildup where the grease boot had come loose. Once I pulled the CV out, it was apparent that the grease had been flung out and was beginning to run dry. When a CV starts to run dry, the rollers begin to get hotter than normal and start to seize up. This hadn't quite gone to that point, and I can see that it wasn't far from that. Glad I caught this when I did so that this didn't cause bigger problems or need to be towed.

    You forgot to mention vibration under acceleration or vibration while climbing a hill or steep grade.

    I think my wheel bearing and CV axle are going bad. After replacing the struts, sway arm bushings, ball joints, and end links, I began to notice that there'd be times where I would feel vibrations from steering wheel or occasionally some low humming. Plus, even though the clunking sound is gone, there's still a small knocking sound when I turn. Although, the sway bar isn't straight anymore either and there's a sign of damage that it's been hitting on the CV axle as well. I guess I got to go to a junk yard and see if they have sway bars in good condition

    I have this same car man 2003 Monte Carlo, car starts up great don’t hear any noise turing, all the rubbers are good, wheel has no play the tred on the tire Isn’t uneven and the rim looks to be in good shape. The only problem it has is when I’m accelerating at about 30mph the front passenger side of the car starts to shake it’s doesn’t get worse or better when I go a little faster. It stops when I let off the gas so I’ve had a couple people try to look at it and I get told it’s a wheel bearing or a cv axle even got told it was an engine mount but i checked the mounts myself and they were okay . I’m hoping it’s not the transmission

    The thing about the lower mounts on these cars especially is that time breaks down the rubber and makes them looser internally. If they're the original ones or have anywhere close to 100k on them, they're worth changing. Vibration like that can break the transmission casting, then it's really bad. I've got videos that I replace all 4 mounts, the CVs, and a wheel bearing. None of them are particularly hard and could be done in an afternoon. The lower mounts would actually be easier to replace without the CV in the way if you were to do them all at once. None of the parts are that expensive either.

    I have a 2003 Avalon, I changed the rack and pinion, bearings, lower control arm, both CV axles, motor mounts, and struts …. My car still has a steering wobble at 60mps under load. When I let go of the gas it stops. I am going crazy trynna figure it out. I even got tires balanced.

    You didn't say how to find out if it's an inboard or outboard. When they first came out with front wheel drive NAPA put on seminar in order to figure out if it's an outboard was told to take the vehicle out to a big clear space in a parking lot turn the wheel to the right or left as you're pulling into a parking spot at fairly fast speeds yet safe whichever side the noise was coming from that's the side in order to check if it's a inboard do the opposite in reverse turning the wheel to left or right or right when you heard the noise it told you if and which inboard CV joint was bad plus when replacing the outers or an outer in the beginning you most definitely wanted to become careful with Chrysler products they didn't put retaining rings to keep the needle bearings from falling apart then you I found found out to use the old thick wheel bearing grease smearing on putting the needle bearings back in the bearing grease holding them in place so you I could slide the outer needle bearings in if you didn't lose any or a needle bearings another thing with Chrysler you if pull both front CV axles that was a definitely no because if you did the spider gears on each side would fall down into the trans case on manual transmissions I made up a stub shaft after pulling one CV axle I'd take my stub shaft stick in the one side I'd removed the axle driving on it with a hammer to pop or push the other remaining axle out holding everything together in the trans the NAPA Seminar taught me that plus much more this is back when front wheel drive first came especially on the K-Cars still be careful there's still some others out there especially in the foriegn vehicles to cheap to do add a couple ten cent snap rings and another way to make a mechanics or auto techs life miserable especially a young man I've been doing this 50yrs

    That is good information, thank you for sharing! Most of the time, CV's are so cheap that the whole thing gets replaced. Diagnosing inboard/outboard isn't really necessary for most home mechanics. If one side is bad, swap the whole thing. I picked up a new CV for that Monte Carlo for a whopping $36 per side. A look under the car for the telltale signs of a loose or torn boot or grease splatters tells everything I need.

    Sounds like a CV may be going bad. I'm not in a position to do work like that for hire. Largely, I take care of my immediate family vehicles. I can recommend a few local shops from Rivertom through Ogden if you are looking for one.

    If you're in the Salt Lake valley, I'd talk to Performance Place or Premier Performance and Auto Care. I've had Performance Place work on my stuff for things like AC and alignment work. If you're up North on Davis County, I'd go see the Master Muffler in Clearfield near the city hall. They may have changed the name to Master Auto Tech, that's a recent change. I know the owner, and I've had his help troubleshooting my diesel truck and other electrical gremlins.

    This is my opinion here. You've probably been driving on it up until now, it'll probably be okay for another go. There's always the chance with compromised parts that they won't make it. I've seen some that should not have been moving that were. If it fails and really breaks, it could beat up the surrounding parts. It's not likely to come into the car with you.

    Could this be causing wobbling wheel after 90km/h????? Pls only experts opinion

  • @SnowFamilyRacing

    A bad CV can cause some vibration in the wheel at speed, you'll find it mostly on accel and decel. The wheel bearing may be more likely. If you suspect the wheel bearing while replacing the CV, it's only a little more work to replace the bearing, too. In this case, it was only a handful of bolts to undo since I was already in there.

  • @chillyboy2008

    @SnowFamilyRacing my problem is wobbling steering wheel, only after 90km/h doesn't matter if I accelerate or not, aaaand is not all the time, only 80% of the time does it. I changed wheels, bearing, I did geometry, equilibration... nothing helps. I checked my steering cassette or column, nothing. So the drive shafts remain... oh and I checked the wheels for bearing problems and came clean, no problems there.

    Here's some physics for you; a bad cv will vibrate more violently at speed multiples. For example if it vibrates a lot at 30 mph, it will vibrate alot at 60 and 120 mph. A ujoint will do this as well. Most other vibrations such as tires or engine issues do not do this. It has to do with resonant frequencies.

  • @SnowFamilyRacing

    @SnowFamilyRacing

    Жыл бұрын

    That is called a resonant harmonic. You may also experience some vibration at the half way between them ,depending on the frequency of the vibration.

    Quick question. I recently had what i believe to be a transmission failure in an automatic fwd car. However, i lost all gears at once without notice, including the park gear. Could this possibly be a broken cv axle? Ive never heard any noises, nor had issues, but all of a sudden my car can drive anymore, and makes a loud clunking noise whenever the gas pedal is engaged.

  • @SnowFamilyRacing

    @SnowFamilyRacing

    Sounds like there's issues in the differential part of the transmission/axle assembly. Losing all the gears at once, including the park and all the crunchy popping noises, says it's after the transmission and before the axles to me.

    Denial is a river in egypt... all joking aside, that's really not a fun repair. I do as much of my own wrench work as possible, but I'd take that to someone who has done it before and has the right stuff to be able to drop the front cradle, engine and trans as a unit safely.
