Replace dual mass flywheel Volvo v50 2 0d (Part One)

The dual mass flywheel started rattling around six months ago and was getting worse, apparently this is a common fault with this type of flywheel.
With the corona virus lock down in place makes an ideal opportunity to deal with the problem.

    David Smith, Thanks for your comment. The outer edge of the seal must be free of any oil or grease when pressing it into the housing, Note: the inner lip of the seal that makes contact with the crankshaft is part made of PTFE which is a low friction self lubricating material, although I had added a tiny smear of grease to the lip before fitting it.

    Great videos, thank you john! One thing tho that will save you time and effort. Subframe doesn´t need to be removed at all, i did my service like that. In the end, my service was a bloody catastrophe! Brand new flywheel that i installed was broken from the box (LUK). Flywheel still keep rattling noise and vibrates the clutch pedal (alltho not that bad like it was before). And i´m really pissed about it. Now i have to order a new flywheel and do that all over again. My car is Volvo C70 2.0D 2009 model.

    MOHAMMED YAKOUBI, When removing the gearbox from the engine there is not enough room with the sub-frame in place, but if you remove the engine and gearbox as one unit then you don't need to remove the sub-frame because the engine will drop down in front of the sub-frame.

  • @johnbower

    ratler man, to remove the four anti roll bar bolts, first remove the bolts holding the rear end of the sub frame, then slacken the two front sub frame bolts a few turns this allows the rear end of the sub frame to drop down a little way, you will now be able to reach above the back of sub frame to remove the four bolts. thanks for the comment.

    John Thank you very much for the two videos. I've got some juddering when accelerating and have settled to essentially following your video. The part I miss I the final bleed of the clutch. When you have done the slave cylinder do you need to do more when it's back together?

  • @johnbower

    @johnbower

    3 жыл бұрын

    Steven Jones, thank you for the comment, yes it is best to further bleed the clutch hydraulic line when you have everything back together, the bleed nipple for this is close to the point where the line enters the bell housing ( the nipple is made of plastic and points forward towards the radiator) It is a bit tricky bleeding this using the two man method, when the clutch pedal is pressed with the bleed nipple open the pedal does not return to the upward position, it has to be lifted back up by hand. When I did mine I used a pressure system that connects to the hydraulic fluid reservoir, then all you need to do is carefully open the bleed nipple, any air in the system is pushed out followed by hydraulic fluid, Note: as the reservoir is shared with the braking system I took the opportunity to flush out all old fluid with new, both the clutch system and brake system using this pressure method.

    Hi JB, Knowing now what problems the Diesel Particulate Filter can cause I feel very fortunate that my 06reg Volvo V50 2.0d does not have a DPF fitted, but later models do have them fitted, it is installed in the forward section of the exhaust system so as to gain as much heat as possible from the engine to help with self cleaning.

  • @johnbower

    @johnbower

    Viljar Niit, I have had starting problems with my Volvo v50, on one occasion it was the air shut off flap in the intake manifold sticking in the closed position, but it's a sticking EGR valve that has caused most starting problems. The rattling noise could very well be a flywheel problem but that will not cause a starting problem.

    @@johnbower already tested that the Shut-off flap works (it only closes for a few sec when I turn the car off) My EGR has been disabled from ECU. Also tried to test the throttle body.. • @johnbower

    Yes the anti roll bar has to be separated from the subframe, but to do this the back of the subframe has to be lowered slightly first to get access to the bolts holding the anti roll bar to it.

    Hi, How high did you had to jack up your car, and how did you manage to put those jack stands in the correct "Jack-up points"? I'm about to fix a core plug in my s60 d5.....

  • @johnbower

    @johnbower

    2 жыл бұрын

    Piotr Steplowski, To lift my Volvo v50 onto 4 jack stands, I first lifted each corner of the car up using a trolley jack under each of the four sill jacking points and placed a block under each of the wheels, this extra height then enables a trolley jack to fit underneath the front and back of the car, I then pushed the trolley jack under the front of the car lifting it up under the front subframe and placed two jack stands under both front sill jacking points, then did the same to lift the back of the car, I used this procedure front then back a little at a time until the car was high enough. Before putting the jack under front subframe the plastic tray under the engine had to be removed, I also used a short length of box section fitted to the jack to span across under the front subframe to give better support when lifting. Note: To make jacking vehicles up easier I have now designed some jacking frames, Check out my video on youtube, (Building the ultimate car jack for home mechanics)
