    I just bought a 2006 S40 T5 and one of the first repairs I did was an axle. I was disappointed to see a pressed in bearing! But we love the car! So far all I've had to do is fix a few electrical issues. I really like that portable press setup you're in-law had! I would've had to take the knuckle and bearing to a shop to have them press it in for me. Great video man!

    I have 3 p1 Volvos in the Last 6 years in germany, the First Broken front wheel bearing was on 175k km and the second v50 on 203 k km. We buy a spezial tool, we make the brake out and than change the bearing in 15 mins. We dont remove the suspension. But it is a nice video

  • @nme700

    That was a big job! Well done! I believe the wheel bearing failure is due to bad road condition. Typically the right side gets damaged from pot hole impacts. Also it looked like the lower ball joint is worn/loose. If it is held to the lower control arm by 3 bolts then consider replacing the ball joint as it is an easy job. New ball joint will give smoother steering feel and actually a slightly quieter ride. That was my experience with similar ball joint setup.

    hello there, if those lower control arms are original then those ball joints are rivetted, you can buy new ball joints with bolts but you have to drill out those rivets to get rid of the old ball joints, have a nice day :)

    I'am afraid the new bearing will also go bad very fast. It should never be pushed back in a way that the force goes through the bearing. The Gen 2 tool pushes the bearing back through the outer ring.

    Nice video. Just a word of advice. You don't hammer the lower control arm to remove the balljoint. Just hit the knuckle joint once or twice to dislodge the ball joint pin. Same goes to your steering rod. No need for that ball joint separator tool.

    It looks like it isn’t much different than the P3 wheel bearing. Is the lower control arm as stiff (hard to lever downward) in the v50? I was shocked when you pulled the whole strut assembly out of the car! It made the job look a little easier than trying to do it on the car, but I think looks can be deceiving.

    Fo Mo Co! This is the answer to your question why the bearing went bad at such a low mileage. Ford wants to empty the pockets of their customers as much as possible. No surprise on that. I had 2005 V50 2.4i for 10 years. I put 160 000 kms on the car and I have changed 4 front wheel bearings and 1 on the rear. I bought the car with 64 000 kms on the clock and right after I bought the car, still under dealer's warranty they have changed 2 in the front. 2 more went bad at around 130 000 kms. Ford knows how to set traps along the ownership of their vehicles. I also had mani problems with the rear alignment of the car. Cost me 3 sets of tires for 160 000 kms(2 all season sets + 1 winter) 3 times the outside temperature sensor went bad. The shims of the AC compressor went bad and the dealership wanted me to change the whole compressor. Ford knows how to set traps! I have now S80 2008. Well I still see many traps set from Fo Mo Co. One of them is the famous blower motor. Well instead of paying hundreds of dollars to the dealership I apply on annual base the 5$ remedy every spring. I saw a video on youtube of a guy who spray the blower motor's bearing with WD-40 or similar. So far it works for me. Countless other problems for a car that has less than 160 000 kms. Thanks to your videos and videos of other people on Internet I have started to learn and repair the car myself.

    This is a tough bugger even with proper press or OTC HubTamer. In a perfect world you wouldn’t press on the inner race but it’ll be 👍. Looks like all heat problems (to degrade the grease and seals like that)

  • @Simon_van_Bentum

    James Larson, you mean the inner ring of the bearing (not "race" ?). I agree. On the second bearing they do use an extra bush on the outer ring (if I saw it correctly).

  • @Orlandsky1

    @Orlandsky1

    3 жыл бұрын

    James is correct, pressing the bearing back in this manner loads the inner race and could risk damaging the bearing. I don’t know why Volvo went with this bearing design as opposed to leaving the old style which was held in place by 4 bolts. The recommended method per Volvo to replace the front bearing requires a special press adapter which loads the bearing outer race.

    The easiest way is not to change the bearing, just buy a new strut along with new knuckle and new bearing. Put all the new parts together and take off the strut along with all the old knuckle and bearing. I find it so much easier and not cost that much when you look at that strut and knuckle it is already rusted. The whole new setup would not cost more than $300 each side and so much less work. I've done it that way after having such a pita with removing the bearing and the suspension was rusting out anyways.
